I seem to recall some similar comments on the USA bass site Spector groups a while back. The pickups sounded great in the video demos hence my interest but it just shows how different the experience can be in the real world. I tried a Schecter with them in as well and thought they sounded better in that bass but not good enough to spring £1k on

I'd wondered about the Schecter, so it's good to hear some feedback on that. 🙂

My love of Puscifer has now overtaken my love of TOOL:

I love how Maynard has a horn to censor the naughty bits in this:

Great stuff!  It's been great to see so much of Carina Round since this latest Puscifer release.  Saw her live in a pub in Milton Keynes, with about 10 other people (might have been 20).  Amazing gig... supremely talented!

I tried the 4 string (A4 Ultra) version of that a few months ago because i was interested in the Fishmans. Didn't like the pickups at all - they seemed to have a load of built in compression in them and robbed the dynamics too much for my preference. But the bass itself was lovely with probably my favourite neck ever on it. And so comfortable to play as well. I bought the next model down (A4 Plus) with Barts in it which seemed more lively when you dig in a bit.

Glad it wasn't just me.  My copy really sounded quite poor, but it was a gorgeous looking bass, very well built.  I was very tempted to swap the pickups out, but in the end it went back and hopefully into someone else's loving embrace.

It will be very interesting to see what price these basses come in at based on the quality of the hardware alone! Sadly for me the 5 string won't be an option as it looks like another 19mm string spacing😭

I feel your pain!  The main reason I play 5 and 6 strings is for the tighter spacing.

Must 'fess that I had my head turned by a Cort bass very recently. I'd always been slightly put off by their budget pups, but this A5 Ultra Ash model launched last year sports Fishman Fluence pups, which is getting a lot of Spector owners excited given its recent appearance on higher end Spector bass ranges. Hipshot Ultra Lites help deliver a sub 9lb weight; its tasty neck through design and some choice woods all come with a price to match of > £1k, and you sense that Cort have decided to park their tanks firmly on several of their contract manufacturing clients' lawns!

I had one of these for a home trial last year, but it was very weak sounding.  Very nicely built, though!  I'm sure the Fishman p'ups are good and I'm sure it was just my copy - but it was the only one I could find in UK stock.  Dood reviewed it for Gi and seemed to think it was alright.

Well I agree that The Gallery’s website needs work, but I’ve been going there since 1996 and have yet to have a bad experience (yes, I know others have had). The thing is, The Gallery is not just a shop, it’s also the main calling point for most of London’s - and elsewhere, given I’m up North! - bass repairs and customisation. Most of the times when I’ve been over the years, it has been incredibly busy.

Given the choice between dealing with BD and the Gallery, it’d be the Gallery every time, by an absolute country mile.

I haven't had a problem with the gallery, they have been friendly enough, certainly no less friendly than BD. I didn't go in the first few times I was there as I assumed it was closed, so I have only been in a couple of times.

This is good to know.  🙂

  7. I chose yes (though there's nothing wrong with 60-year old tech).  Because in principle it works well.  However:

    • I've never played a multiscale that I liked the feel of.
    • I've never played a multiscale that sounded good.

But, I've not played every multiscale out there!  Owned a couple of Ibanez models, a Strandberg prog, and had a Dingwall NTG for an extended loan.  All of them played like turkey, or had poor ergonomics (neck dive, etc) and really none sounded that great.  The Dingwall was probably best, but I swear the neck was fatter than a baseball bat (not my preference).

That’s one of the early models. Shorter scale, single truss rod, neck through and one piece bridge. Great basses even now.

I thought that was what the 5P was?

Anyway, lovely basses!  I had a 5Pii and it was just a bit long and heavy for me.  A 5P would be amazing!

Interesting, you are right, its not possible to fix what we dont know about, but, if its a staff member who is dis-interested/not giving you the service, and they are the only person in the shop who do you complain to?

To my knowledge there isnt another bass forum which has such a UK based population, and there arent many bass specific stores in the UK.  If I owned one, I'd be all over the forum checking what people were saying about my business.  I'd think if Bass Direct are unaware of the feeling on here from some people its a major blunder on their part.  Likewise if they are aware and not willing to do anything to remedy the issues, its not a great long term business model in my view.

I'll still use them, but I do check other places before making a purchase.

I can't help but agree.  I might be wrong, but I get the impression he's one of those kinds of shop owners who has a very fixed idea of his business.  I can't blame him, as it probably works well most of the time, and it might mean that his regular customers get reliable and consistent service.  It's certainly better than the Gallery: he keeps the website mostly up to date and isn't downright unpleasant.

Not wishing to criticise you, or others on this thread who have complained of poor service, but why not call them out on it? No-one likes poor service, but if you don’t make a point of telling the, how and why you’re getting poor service (and that they’ve lost a sale, or even lost a customer!) nothing will change.

This is right.  Not that Mark has been at all interested the few times I have called him out on it.

However, it's still valuable if people also want to post on here with their experiences, don't you think?  It's only the same as chatting to your mates down the pub.  I personally find it quite comforting to know that it's not just me... and also I find it reassuring that others have had better experiences!

  11. I think there's some variance in the quality of the Sterling range, but from what I've seen... they're comparable, but not quite as premium feeling as the MM stuff.  In most cases, it's subtle.  If I played Stingrays, I'd probably use a Sterling Ray 35.  They sound just as good in most situations.

Heck, I'd love a Sterling Bongo!

  12. Mine was a Tanglewood copy of a Corvette, around 1997.  Beautiful green stain.  Played quite nicely, from what I remember.

Oddly, I was never that serious about the bass until I moved on from the Tanglewood (circa 1999).  I defretted it and kept it around until 2010-ish.  Then I gave it to a local music charity.

  13. I've had a lot of bad experience with BD for customer service issues.  First time I remember they sent me a new cab which was completely damaged and made me work so hard for a replacement (the packaging was completely intact).

Most recently I went in there a few years ago and was trying to choose a new OD pedal and I wanted a bit of advice.  The guy in there didn't want to help, but was OH SO KEEN when Scott Devine came in.  Spent the whole time chatting, while I left with nothing.

I take a look at their stock sometimes, but something always stops me investigating further.
