1. Thanks Bass Bod for the information about the KA's that WD music sells..
Can anyone confirm they're Korean? I'm thinking I made the right choice with the Bill Lawrence EB60 though, so I can take the KA's off my to buy list!!!
Bass players on a budget are a very thorough lot eh?

2.
At the time I became quite partial to a little bit of flange. 20-something years on, I'm now on the flange hunt once again.
Flange... Can't live with it, can't live without it..
Personally I prefer a shaved flange....

3. Right...
Purchased from Dusty's Guitars eBay store (http://stores.ebay.com/Dustys-Guitar-Kingdom)
for £25.50 + £6.50 P&P, I hoped for £32 I'd grabbed a bargain.. Advertised as the Bass version of the legendary Lawrence L-500XL as used by the late Dimebag Darrell and Dave Mustaine, I thought this bladed pickup might just have the bollocks to put my Guitarist and Drummer back in their seats.. They're both LOUD!!!
It arrived after just over a week with a Custom's surcharge to pay!! £12.31 later it didn't seem so cheap, so I got home and unpacked it..

First question... Why do I have 3 wires coming from the pickup? Surely it's not active as it wasn't advertised as such.. I'll check the wiring diagram.. Oops.. There ain't one in the box.. Time for trial and error with the soldering iron..
I discovered the red cable worked best soldered to the rear of the tone control as an earth..
Black and white wires as per normal set-up for a P-Bass..
Back on with scratch plate and strings and time for a test...
What can I say? It's clear, powerful with tone to spare.. The bass thumps and the treble sings.. It makes the stock MIM pickup sound like an under-water fart.. I now have turbo P-Bass!!
Was it worth £32 + £12.31 customs surcharge? You bet..
I now have a bass sound I'll be happy to record our next album with.. I can't wait til next weeks gig though.. That's gonna be a BELTER!!!
As a recap...
Bass 9/10 (I'm trying to be objective here.. It's 10/10 for me!!)
Mids 7/10
Treble 8/10
This pickup has got classic P-Bass tones in spades.. For a 'Punk Rock' player like me it's got JJ Burnell and Matt Freeman as well as Dee Dee... It's also capable of a nice clean tone that would suit Reggae and Soul.. I'm very happy with what it's done for a Standard MIM Fender P-Bass.. Well worth a go!!
Bargy Bass..

4. Right!! It turned up..
Well, I say turned up.. I had to fetch it from the sorting office
and first pay the dreaded CUSTOMS CHARGE!!
On a pick I paid £25.50 for I had to pay £12.31!!!!
That put me in a great mood to start!!
The pickup was all there, but with an extra wire coming from it!!
Installation instructions in the box? Eeerrr NO!!
Luckily I figured it was an earthing wire.. I think!!
It's working anyway.. and it sounds....
FLIPPIN' MARVELLOUS!!!!!

5. Right...
PUNK ROCK...
Try some early Stranglers or Ramones..
It's really been a pretty much standard bass for many a Punk band..
Most of the bass players in bands who are mates use 'em, some of
them have been using the same P-Bass for 30 years..
They just have the thump & grunt to get the job done and hold it all together..
EQ, modifications etc??? well thats down to the individual and to suit
the band they're in.. So far I've changed the bridge and have another
pickup on the way, Tusq nut, and my ever trusty Roberts strings..
If you're after a more 'Modern' P-bass punk sound, Rancid's Matt
Freeman has always used one to good effect..
Other lesser know bands? The Last Resort (both current and past bassists!),
the Lurkers and current 999 bass player Arturo Bassic welds one to great effect...
Let's not forget it's use in Pub Rock to...

6.
That's the kind of box mine came in. If you look it says Bill Lawrence Products on the front. It wasn't a pickup from THE Bill Lawrence. In fact, it didn't even have a pickup cover. I had to hunt around the Leeds music stores to find a set of covers. It seems to sound good so that's all that really matters.

Cheers,
Thanks for that mate... Let's hope it turns up with covers!!
I still await it's arrival and hope customs haven't got interested..
Posted last tuesday with a hopeful 5-10 days wait according to the seller,
I'm just curious to see what arrives now.

7.
Bill Lawrence Products is very much different from the Bill Lawrence

There used to be a whole history of the dispute between these two on the second site above but they seem to be re-hashing things right now. The second site is the real Bill Lawrence and you can find lots of reviews of his products if you Google him.

I too bought a P-Bass pickup off ebay thinking it was the real MaCoy but it sounds good and was cheap.

Cheers,
I was hoping these were the ones made by the real Bill Lawrence and his website does say he'd started making these again last October on a limited run.. I'm sure it's one of these that's on it's way to me.. The other company don't appear to be making 'em, so you never know..
If it sounds good when I drop it in, that'll be me pleased!!

8.
Elite Stadiums but I've not really tried many brands.

Loads of people raved about how good the Roberts strings were for the money so I might give them a try.
I'm still using the Roberts.. Changed the set I originally put on after SEVEN or so gigs + rehearsals... And I managed to grab two more sets for a tenner which should last me the rest of the year.. Guess I'm just lucky that way...

9. When this arrives, I intend to install it and attempt to give it a review..
Seems there's very little information about these pickups on t'internet
so I'll try and shed a little light.. I'm hoping I get lucky like I did with
my Roberts Strings and Q-Parts bridge from eBay..
Bass on a budget? That's my name!!

10.
Just come across another one on ebay... link
Thats what I used to have!! And to think I sold it to buy a guitar when the band I was starting couldn't find a guitarist.. They were the days of a glut of Hardcore Punk Bass Players in London..

11. 25th or 26th of August..
Can't see any gigs booked in my diary..
I will double check though.. I'm also supposed to be recording an album
round that time and just my luck that weekend will be in the studio!!
Crawley sounds good..
