  1. I love my DOD FX62. one the the few (I've not seen any other in fact...) chorus pedals with a delay time control. It adds a whole host of extra flexibility in chorus sounds. Much more useful than a tone control or, dare I say, a mix control.

I dont have the above but i have the Vitoos ISO 8 which is almost identical , it's just that when i searched for Vitoos for this thread, i couldn't find one.  I 've had mine for a few years when you could buy them most places, but where are they now, i have no idea.

The one above in the link has 2 more sockets than my Vitoos, so a bargain

I have one of these, works great. The switchable two 8/12/18v outputs are very handy. I also have the HB Powerplant and Powerplant Junior, both very good.

I had the Boss Flanger BF3 but sold it pretty quickly.  When in use it drowned everything out and made the sound really thin. I now use an MXR Flanger, the big grey one. It's excellent.

That'll be the M117R, good enough for Steve Severin*, so more than good enough for me.

*and plenty of other people like John McGeoch, EVH etc.

On that note, does anyone know whether the small TC Electronic pedals (e.g. Spectracomp or Spark mini) turn on automatically when powered?

My TC Hypergravity remembers it's on/off state after power down. I've not pulled it apart yet (shocker for me, I'm usually right inside a new pedal checking the guts out) so not sure if the soft touch switch is still mechanical or if they use other wizardry to achieve it.

I don't know this amp and haven't found a schematic , but looking at the basic amp spec, it would be worth experimenting with a clean boost to see if you can drive the ECC83 preamp amp circuit to give you some more "natural overdrive" from the preamp valves .

Something like a Mosky XP (xotic EP boost clone)  circa £20  would do this and gives you upto +20dB of boost.

I often do this on my guitar valve amps to get more input gain.

    Specs:

    Preamp:

    3x ECC83 tubes (3x12AX7)

    Power amplifier:

    4x6L6 tubes

    120W output

I have the Mosky XP boost on my guitar board, it's a cracking pedal for the price. I can't see any point in paying any more for anything else when this is such a simple "effect".

A good place to start is the tc electronic Spectracomp, as A. It's v cheap s/h & B. The toneprints mean it's not a 1 trick pony, it'll do everything from subtle transparent to 3 band full on colourisation.

Or go for the TC Hypergravity, it's a Spectracomp and more. The 4 knobs give more adjustabilty and there is a toggle switch for "spectracomp", the chosen Toneprint and "Classic" modes. It only cost me £2 more than a Spectracomp when the latter was out of stock.

The recipe has changed a few times over the years

There's definitely a difference in my pair's EQ circuits. The '89 is  a fair bit brighter, especially when you crank the treble right up. The '79 is more the "classic" Ray tone.

Thanks I’ll have a look when she gets restrung. Also need to do this with my Celinder as there’s no serial on it anywhere else! Better get the screwdrivers out 🪛

    This is my '89.

    And neck of my '78...

Yeah unfortunately you're right - I have found serials above and below mine from '83 but it would be interesting to know the date (although I assume different parts will be made any time from 1974 onwards!)

If you pop the neck off, the date for the body and neck will be stamped on each item, in the pocket and on the heel.

  10. Huraah for Brexit!! UPS returned a whole container of orders made over the Christmas period to Thomann on Thursday. They are reprocessing orders net of VAT so it can be charged locally. No doubt will also now get stung on import duties too.

My oldest pedals are an Arion Chorus and Aria Flanger, both plastic and pushing 35yrs old now. I wonder what people do to them to break them. that is, if they really have, or perhaps they are just repeating myths because ThEy ReAd It On ThE iNtErNeT.

  12. So, my old man said follow the van and don't dilly dally on the way.

Off went the cart with the home packed in it I walked behind  with me old pink torpedo linnet

And I dillied, I dallied and I dallied and I dillied

I lost the van and don't know where to roam

The PJ-74 VW was showing as available in 14-18 weeks so I dillied and dallied... and I lost the bass! It's now not showing on the site at all. :(

My only alternative for a PJ from HB is the PJ-4 HTR, but does my desire for a PJ override the fact it's red.

  13. My finger is hovering over the Buy button for a PJ-74 VW. I've spent the best part of 15 years "refurbishing" (read leaving in a box in the spare room) my original Cort PJ bass, so I've decided it would be easier just to buy a new PJ and get playing. Not the cheapest in their range, but boy does it look nice to me. Also sounds pretty tasty and I have SD 1/4lber P pickup and Fender J pickup I can put in if I fancy.

Perosnally I think her designs were unique and sounded horrible in that very special way - others think she was an untrained hack who made abominations.

Having come across some of her posts and circuits on  the stompbox forums, she certainly came across as the untrained hack. From seeing some of her circuits, she was just "bolting" together various blocks she had found elsewhere without understanding basics like what input and output caps are for, resulting in having two series caps in the middle of one of her "designs". Also seemed quite clueless on component values. However that lack of knowledge is probably what gave the special horribleness to her pedals that people like.

Damn you.....I thought I was happy with my BF-2 until you said that.

    :)

Well, it' what he used to get his sound, hence why I bought it (that and John McGeoch using one). Sorry! :D He said his was the older mains powered one, but I guess it's the same flanger circuitry on my later battery one.

  16. I think my favourite is my MXR117, really gets the Steve Severin tone. My Aria one also works well as does the Arion (use different feedback so sounds more "vocal" than a normal flanger). Haven't tried the BF-2 or e-Lady on bass. Yes, I do have a few flangers :D

My flangers/chorus usually go after drive pedals and before delay, seems to work well like that.

As far as offering anything more, the few flangers I've used in multi-fx tend to less controls to twiddle, they don't tend to have a "manual" knob or feedback. I'm sure there will be some multi-fx that do offer more than just Rate/Depth controls, I've just not had that much exposure to them.
