  1. Worst basses I've owned, back when I first started, were a Westfield 5 string (Warwick copy), which weighed a tonne, and had the neck profile of a subway train, and a BC Rich Warlock.
In fairness, the Westfield was my first bass, and cost me just 200 quid. It got me started.
There is no excuse for the Warlock, though. Used it for about a month, then sold it for £50 to cash converters!

Happy end to the story, though. I went through a run of Ibanez SR basses, 4, 5 and 6 stringers, which I loved playing (setups done properly!), and have since traded up to a couple of Dingwall ABZ's, in 4 and 5 string flavours. :)

  2. Cheers Jellyfish. You'll have to keep me updated on your build, too. :)
I'm going to try and get and play some basses with East pre-amps in. I've had a look at some YouTube videos, but they don't really tell you enough. I'm not sure what type of pickups to go for. I quite like the idea behind the combo set that Wizard do, again with the view to keeping plenty of options for different styles of music. I didn't realise they were quite so sought after.
Can't wait to get this project started properly, and then to see it all come together. Exciting stuff!

  3. Hi all,

I’m in the process of putting together a custom build spec with the guys at Alpher Instruments, in Saltaire (Yorkshire).
So far I’ve chosen the woods, and hardware, but am now mulling over the mind-field that is electronics.
I’ve decided that I want to have as much flexibility with tone as possible, so I’m favouring active circuitry, with a passive switch.
Now comes the problem. What do I go for, pickup and pre-amp wise?
As standard, Alpher use John East pre-amps, and Wizard pickups. Not a bad start.

What do you guys recommend, though? It’d be good to get some opinions. J

Here is the spec, so far:

    Body wood: Swamp Ash (1-piece)
    Neck wood: Wenge (1-piece, quarter-sawn)
    Fingerboard: Madagascan Rosewood
Top wood: Highly figured spalted maple
    Body Veneer: Wenge
    Bridge: Hipshot Mono-rail (19mm spacing, 4 string)
Tuners: Hipshot U-Lite tuners, with D-tuner
    Scale: 34 inch
    Jack: Neutrik Locking Jack

I'll try and keep you all updated with the process, once it all begins, I'm off to meet the guys at Alpher in a couple of weeks to put the finishing touches to the spec, and get things rolling! :)

    Cheers!

  5. Hi guys,
I'm selling my SR505 in order to fund the Dingwall I just ordered
The bass is in really good condition, and hardly used since I got it. £350 ovno.
If you need me to send pictures, get in touch. I'm in Leamington Spa (nr Coventry), for those nearby..

  6. ** Bass sold to a friend. I know this will get some good use, looking forward to seeing this bass being used to it's full potential. Check out "Finish Him" on Facebook, this bass's new home...

    Hi guys,

I'm selling my Clover Xpression 4 string in order to part-fund the Dingwall I just ordered. £500 (down from my original asking price of £700).

The bass is in good condition, although there is a little damage to the top edge of the body where it's taken a whack.

There are some photos posted below, but if you'd like me to email you any, just let me know.

I'm in Leamington Spa (nr Coventry) for anyone in the area.
