1.
I always wondered who the bass player was on that record. Absolute groove monster and my favourite album of hers. Her studio efforts never seem to reach the heights of her live stuff. More due to the tendency of neo-soul producers to opt for the clean electronic sound rather than her I think; oh well :)

    Solid playing here-

That style of music always sounds like a piss-take to me. I half expect to see Norman Pace on bongos.

  2.
Was going to say the same. The Assassin will know.

Got to be worth £150 - £250? May go for less though.
Really? I thought it would be worth slightly more. But what do I know!
At least the postage costs won't figure for you.
I have no interest in buying it, as I say, just trying to help a mate out.

  3.
PM 'bassassin' he'll give you a good idea or stick a thread in the JapCrap Spotting section, the regulars in there will know better than anyone!
Good thinking WH. I like your style.

  4. Hello people,

I'm trying to an old buddy a favour.

Does anyone have an idea what this is roughly worth:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Early-Aria-Pro-II-SB...ents_Guitars_CV?

My mate is desperate to know as soon as possible, so be cool if anyone has a view on this who can answer pretty quickly.

....and it is genuinely a mate. Not the type of "mate" who sends you to the chemist to get some cream for [s]your[/s] his wee lad.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Flats are the business. Never played them until OldGit kindly sent me a set he wasn't getting on with. Went straight in at the deep end with some LaBella Deep Talkin' James Jamerson's. I took to them straight away. It just feels and sounds like a bass should.

  6.
Felixstowe isn't too far to make a quick visit to Bassmerchant. They stock Aguilar, plus Eden and SWR for the sake of comparison, not to mention Markbass...
    Might be worth a try.
But stay away from the SWR obviously. Life's to short.

  7.
You might even like a Markbass cab! But you should be able to improve on a Metro with a proper 112!
But that's the thing - if the Metro is bilbo's "sound", no amount of cash spent will better it.

  8. I've often scoffed at the importance people place on tone (given the fact that most gets lost in the mixed/not noticed by the audience), but I've come round to the idea that its important to sound good for your own benefit. I play better when I'm happy with my sound.

This was drilled home by the terrible SWR Combo I keep having to hire at my rehersal studio. I play like sh*t every time I have to use. To my mind, SWR are worse than war criminals.

I think carrying a bit of extra weight for a few minutes is worth it if it results in a happy gig.

  9.
One thing I've always wondered about 100% bespoke instruments is whether I actually know enough about what I want to ask someone to build it for me. Frankly I don't think I do, despite 20 years of playing bass. I pick one up, if I like it I buy it, if not I put it down again. I don't really put much thought into why.

If I wanted to make sure I liked the neck I suppose I could say "Make it like a Jazz" but then why not just buy a Jazz? And stuff like pups and preamps I'd be completely stumped - I've no idea what most of the stuff on the market sounds like.
I agree 100%.

I sit here bemused most days listening to people talk about that distinctive Ken Smith "snap", or the "burpy" quality of the U-Retro preamp or how adding a cocobola 2mm veneer will add a "glassy" clarity to the top end or other such nonsense. I sometimes think its just a cock-measuring excercise. Maybe its just my lack of sophistication, but my instructions to a luthier would probably be "make it sound like a P but with a Jazz neck". Might as well just buy a Lakland Duck Dunn.

Firstly, I'm no where near qualified to have an idea of what the combination of different woods and electronics would sound like, and secondly, I question how much of it is actually just bullshit.

  10.
Talk to a waterboardee for their opinion on that.
I think that's more the fear element. A cat slung in a bag with a load of bricks probably doesn't comprehend the fate that awaits it. Its just dark and wet. Almost like returning to the womb.

  11.
What are you implying?

I find that sort of thing disturbing, since I hate cruelty of any sort, and have numerous cats. Get a few dreams about torturing animals do you? There's a thread about that on BC somewhere. may I direct you to that? :)
I always thought drowning cats was one of the least cruel ways to get rid of them? Drowning is supposedly surprisingly painless.

I just take mine up the garden and hit them round the head with a spade.

  12. To be honest, I was hoping for a big improvement and was left dissapointed. Regardless of the typos and technical errors, I just find the writing incredibly boring! The guitar mags are a league above in terms of interesting content and writing style.

I don't agree with all this talk of improvement not happening over night. To my mind, the mag doesn't need tweaking - it needs a massive overhaul.

Still buy it though, so why should they care?

  13.
Not very democratic though, is it?
But I can see WoT's point. This forum is owned by people, and is therefore run under their rules. It would be nice if it was run a democracy (although I question how workable it is), but it is ultimaately the site owners decision. I'm not commenting on if its right or wrong - it just "is".

I think if the Mods do push for keeping the clause we're not happy about without explanantion on justification, its a pretty bad PR job.
