This one's here. I'm not going to write too much as I'm on my phone atm. Generally pleased but only got there with a serious truss rod kerfuffle and a shim in the neck pocket. Thomann customer service were pretty good about it. I guess one takes one chances at this sort of money.

  2. Parametric. The treble filter on my eq3b is thin notching a nasty clack noise a bit at about 4 or 5k, at a guess. The treble is otherwise pretty pushed on both amp and bass, for clarity. that said, the fridge isn't the last word in finesse so the treble push might be somewhat compensating that.

  3. Thanks KB. Not really my style to jump in feet first like this but rather impressed with some of the demo videos I've found in the meantime. Technically we're chalking this up as her engagement present to me so it's guilt free too.

anyway. I'll do a thread when I've given it the beans. Thanks for the impromptu inspiration :)

Eyeing up the white 5 er for the same price. The Mrs has said yes. I'll get round to buying it when the shock paralysis wears off

Alright so the button is pushed. Without wishing to thread-jack, what should I expect? There's not a lot of info online about that B550 model. Looks ok though :)

Remember that iPhones and Macs are made in China too...

Probably 80 or 90% of all musical instruments are made in China. Down at individual components, regardless of where the assembly is/ who's doing it, and you're probably approaching 100% - something, somewhere, within the item. A sampler will always be the factory's very best and most attentive work, especially if you're able to convincingly suggest that you're in a position to initiate a steady rate of bulk purchases on satisfactory inspection of said sample.

Take a $ price. Add 20% for bulk shipment, 2.6% (iirc) to HMRC, mark up for each stage in the distribution of the product from warehouse to retailer, and 20% VAT, and you're probably looking at $80 on here for £400 (more?) on the peg in your local music shop. As I recall the Chinese postal (international) service is improbably fast, and cheap.

As a sweeping generalisation, I think Chinese designers still misconstrue some of the subtleties of western tastes so they come up with some really wacky stuff, but most of their creative output is usually to copy specific western designs as closely as they can, and some plants are brilliant at it.

    Seems legit...! :)

  7. I'd be inclined to prioritise the mics, get the main one clear louder than you think you'll need, then pull it back where you think you'll really need it. Repeat with the 2nd and 3rd mics so now all 3 mics are open where you think you'll need them. You may need to revisit mic 1 just in case the spare headroom has dropped but hopefully you've still got filters to spare at this point, and bear in mind you probably want a few filters spare anyway because the acoustics will change when the room is full of soft and absorbant punter shaped bodies.

Give yourself extra time at the first gig, and have a play with it in practice. Every venue will be a bit different.

If they are passives, are you sure it's smoke and not just steam. There is no circuitry in a passive speaker, maybe it's just dampness

It might just be knocking a bit dust off, but smoke and a bad smell probably means either toasted voice coils or crossover. I'd open the cabs up if poss.

  9. 15" at 8 ohms, paralleled with the oddity cab re-wired using only the 16 ohm 10, and the 4 ohm as a passive radiator until a matching 16 ohm 10" is found, should work ok and keeps your amp in not-on-fire state.

  10. Personally I think it'd be instructive to anybody to plug their bass into a mixer, through a di, and listen to the tone difference. Any decent pa rig should be aiming for low distortion (transparency) and, having done this, it felt immediately clear how much any bass amp colours this.

It could be argued that the dosh you pay for your bass amp is that default colouration to the tone. The EQ is the table salt, pepper and condiment that you add, to your taste, to chef's preamp circuit dish.
