1. That version of Caravan is just stunning ... alll of it, not just the bass.

If I really concentrate on the closing Oscar Peterson solo, I can just make out the chord progression of the original song ... I can't imagine how his mind works.

Has to be said it's so far distant from my current upright skills that it'll be some time before before I delve into this stuff again. :)

Great ... if you hunt around a bit you'll find the same stand from other sellers ... not sure if you'll save much though.

  3.
Well it looks like I'll be picking me Aria Swb up next week and it suddenly dawned on me, when Im gigging where can I put when im playing me electric bass?? Is there such a thing as an EUB stand???

I really dont want to resort to leaning it against a wall!!!
I had to hunt for one recently and I came up with THIS which works well with my BSX Allegro. The key thing for me was finding something where the supporting arms would raise up high enough for the short body with the spike out. This one does it for me, the spike is 21 inches and it's just off the floor.

  4.
Now that looks very nice - so what's deal...sound feel...what p/ups....(I could go on)

    BB
Sound is great. Bigger volume unplugged than you'd think with that small body, it could be that I'll get around to miking it. Pickup sound is also good, very db-like to my ears, to a much greater degree than any other EUB I could get my hands on (includes various NSs, Triumph, Eminence and others).

Pickup is as fitted by BSX. (bsxbass.com) It appears to be 4 piezos right under each string, but hard to tell because it's integral to the bridge.

On feel ... well I'm a total noob to the upright thing so while it feels alright to me neither me nor the bass are settled as yet. The previous owner had quite a high action set, so at some stage I'll be bringing that down by tweaking the neck bolts. (That's a designed in feature, not a case of making shims). Right now I'm just trying to toughen up fingertips and muscles by using it with the high action. It's still easier to play than my DB because the neck is slightly slimmer on the BSX. Being a noob though, I'm not sure which one is normal.

Worth noting that it has a lot of resemblances to an upright, not least of which, you can anchor your thumb *under* the fingerboard when playing pizz. Heel is also placed like an upright. I think its a D neck as opposed to an Eb neck on my DB ... may have got that wrong, its shorter anway.

    Does that help ?

  5.
Just to let ch'all know, the collection has been swelled by three instruments this week, a Fernandes medium scale PJ bass, a Washburn `Force 42' headless and a `Jaco' style tribute fretless! Pics to follow!

    Am now skint again...!
You have an addiction and you need to be cured.

1st step in your therapy ... give them all to me :)

  6. I'm probably way too late here, but can I put in a vote for the BSX Allegro ?

My quest was for an EUB that sounded as near to an real upright as I could get. I tried NS CR4/5 and WAV, Warwick Triumph, Palatino, Eminence, Vektor, an older Bassix, and probably a couple more. The one that really convinced me was the Allegro.

    http://www.bsxbass.com/allegro.html

It has to be said they're not terribly easy to find in this country ... but Dino (the builder) seems to offer an export deal that means he absorbs the shipping price and you get it for the same price as someone in the U.S.

  7.
You'll be giving me the first one then?
I'm not caring about quality anymore, I just want one to try out.
I'm keeping the DB for the forseeable future. I can't see it getting gigged (in contrast to the BSX) but even in it's beaten up state it's got something the BSX hasn't ... a big fat soundbox :)

If I'm gigging down your way with the BSX I'll let you know.

    Cheers, Andy

  8. Bringing the thread back on-topic :) ... my latest acqusition ...

Much easier to play than the 3/4 upright, much easier to transport, and a very nice sound to boot.

    It's a BSX Allegro Acoustic.

  9.
Well, quite a bight tone usually - I can get a good slap sound out of it with a bit of EQ on the amp end of things, roll back the tone and it's quite pounding - put on some nylon wrapped strings and it can sound more 'URB' though.

Not as versatile as the normal Status basses, but still got a good range of tones in it.
I have the fretless five version of this bass and love it, particularly with nylon wound strings. While nothing (IMHO) is ever going to sound like a URB except a real URB, my electro makes a pretty nice substitute.

Steve's fretted 4 should be a nice sounding bass. Somebody go for it :)

  10.
I think I might look seriously for a 700RB210. Do they have a clear, deep sound? And has anyone tried the neo versions@

    Chris
I bought my GK 700RB115 precisely because it sounded deep and clear, to my ears. It is for sale now, if you still happen to be in the market for a combo. Check link below in my sig.

  11.
Bass, amp., 2 cabinets, stand, 2 speaker cables - guitar lead, 4 way mains unit, spare set of strings, spare lead, extra long mains extension cable, roadie wrench, gaffa tape, spare strap, spare mains lead, gloves (particularly in winter) and anything else that may
    be lying around.
Roadie Wrench ? I can guess, but what exactly is it you've got there ? What brand names should I look for ?

    Andy

  12.
I like the idea of a Di box - I'll get one.
A Sansamp DI box is a great investment, not only a DI but an instant 'fatness' stompbox. You can also have the straight signal going to your rig, plus the treated signal (allegedly based on the sound of a miked cab) going to the PA.

Must admit i don't regard mine as an amp substitute, but I may start doing that.

I bought mine 2nd hand but having used it I'd have no hesitation in buying a new one if I ever lost it.

    Andy

  13. 1 Bass or 2 if the variety of material demands it. (No longer take a back up bass)

    1 Bass combo

    Guitar stand(s)

Instrument leads (including spares and choice of length)

EITHER SansAmp DI, Reverb, Floor Tuner, Boss graphic, 9V Power supply and power daisy chain.
OR Pandora PX4B (if floor space or setup time is limited)
PLUS associated patch cords and spares.

EITHER 2-way power extension if I know the venue and band well enough to know I'm just looking after myself,
OTHERWISE 4-way so my extension is usable by others.

At least 2 9V batteries (covers pedals and Active basses) and sometimes 4 AAAs (Pandora)

Old sets of strings as spares.

    Spare amp Kettle lead

Small toolkit, including Allen keys (action) and some superglue and fuses, and Mini Maglite

    Spare strap

    Gaffa tape

    Towel ( LINK )

Small story: on a recent gig, we went through most of my contingency materials (spare strap excepted) in an effort to get the guitarists P.A. working. It didn't happen (speculation, internal fuse broken), so we walked away from the gig without playing.

Maybe carrying spare amps (or having friends local to the gig you can rely on for spares) is a good thing.
