What about these?

They'll work, but are a much more engineered solution & usually need access to a pillar drill for best results.

Cocktail sticks + superglue = £2 @ Poundland, don't need specialist equipment & are an easy DIY option. You'll also have plenty left over for when your strap buttons work loose. :)

Fenders have been held together by four woodscrews since the dawn of time & in most cases they work just fine.

    Pete.

  2. Check the label of the thinners & steer clear of it if it contains xylene. It'll work, but is heinous stuff & can make the O rings in your gun swell up.
'Proper' cellulose thinners are usually based around acetone & toluene.

  3. Have a hunt in your local car spares shop for 'Knifing Stopper'. A few thin coats of that followed up by some wet sanding ought to level everything out.

Another good filler is 'Miliput' - either a model/hobby shop or Ebay. I've yet to find something it won't stick to, & it flats out beautifully. It can also be worked & smoothed with a wet spatula/putty knife before it starts curing which saves a bit of sanding. Sets rock hard in about 4 hours.

  4. Did you have any trouble hearing yourself?

I've had my left hand lock up once on a sit-in due to that. For some inexplicable reason instinct told me that pressing the strings really hard would make them louder... had a forearm like an iron bar for half an hour afterwards.

I always wonder about that... I remember tiny little details from songs that I haven't heard in years and years too! I wonder if everybody works the same way, or if it's some kind of gift like a photographic memory?

I've long been convinced that we never truly forget anything... it's just that we can't always remember it.

  6. I hear you, but (for me) there's just a bit of edginess that they're lacking. Love the drumming though.

Dunno if you've found this lot:

Alright folks... as someone who hasn't listened to much of the Beatles over the years, where should I start?
I'd nominate the 'Red' & 'Blue' albums. Both compilations released in the early 70s and span 1962-66 (Red) & 67-70 (Blue). From there - if they float your boat - it's simple enough to seek out individual albums.

From my generalised POV, they were the first successful 'homegrown' act that had their own voice. When they started, just about everybody was trying to be American - Billy Fury & Cliff are two well-known Elvis impersonators. 'Pop' was largely ruled by Tin Pan Alley. Once the Beatles got over their 'imitation' phase they inspired a lot of people to kick the door open & just... be themselves. All of a sudden it was OK to write your own stuff & sing in a regional accent; the Stones did the same a little later.

Hendix did the same for guitar. Before him there wasn't much going on besides Bery Weedon's 'Play In A Day' and Hank Marvin:— Clapton, Townshend & Green were getting there, but Hendrix blew the bloody door off.

  8. I'm a fan (& so is the Rt. Hon. Member for Greenwich), have been for ages. Had a chat with him at the GBBF a few years back - really nice bloke, smokes Camels & drinks Proper Beer. That said, his stuff's a bit of an acquired taste & can polarise opinion. If you haven't found it already, hunt down "32-20 Blues" on YouTube. Terrible, terrible jumper... but the playing...

If you don't have any of the albums, get your hands on 8th Street Nights for starters.

  9. Saw your original ad, but as 10 out of the 23 bands really don't do anything for me I didn't think it worth a punt for fear of wasting everybody's time. Also, you didn't indicate where in London... big place, some bits easier for me to get to than others.

Got a link to anything recorded - even a rehearsal rough? That's a better way of judging.

The serial number ends in an 85 so I think it is from then.

Although the site at http://en.wikipedia...._Pro_II_Guitars says they were only made between 1979 and 1983.

I did ask the seller and he bought it second hand in the late 80's, so he wasn't sure when it was made.
Ah... Other end. If it's an '85 then the S/N ought to start with a 5.

As to the weight, a lot of it rests in the hardware; If you take off the pickups & that mahoosive die-cast bridge it knocks a significant amount off. Another factor is that gorgeous cut of Ash that makes up the body; my SB-900 has a boring grain but the growth rings are almost ruler straight and only a couple of mm apart - slow grown timber usually has a higher density - same goes for the maple in the neck.

    Quality with a capital Q.

  11. Front page is still bit borked for me - no titles so I can't get access to any sub-forums, have a screengrab:

Firefox 16.0.2. Cleared the cache, flushed DNS, updated Quicktime & ran CCleaner... nada.

    Same result viewed in IE8.

View new posts works fine though.

  12.
Cheers BA. It's a little ploinky (?) for my liking. However with a little more modern grit and a bit of a mid cut its probably not a million miles away. Not knowing much about Aria, is there anything specifically comes to mind? I did find the odd Schecter that was getting close. Anyway, all food for thought.
That's an issue with posting clips - they tend to date from 1980-ish so we're in the world of VHS with the sound completely müllered by compression.

    Try this though:

There are a load of video links here. Also worth a look is TB'er Zuma's channel on Youtube

As you seem set on twin 'buckers, key models are:
    SB-900
    SBR-80
    SBR-150
    Elite-II
    and the seriously rare SB-LTD

Series/Parallel switching is a common feature if that's your bag. They're naturally mid-dy basses, but the twin 'buckers don't need much coaxing in the grit department.

All (apart from the LTD) turf up here & on Ebay. A budget of £400 ought to land a decent example (apart from the LTD).

Hoping the link works... Posting on my phone. Otherwise search YouTube for 1994 ibanez iceman and it should pull the video up. The guy's beef with the music shop is irritating, but it's a good vid on the whole.

And yeah, if I'm going the route of the customer bass I suppose the trusty Sub has little to fear....! :)
Ah yes, I did find that one... was hoping for a clip with one in a band situation. Seriously cool/quirky look to the Iceman.

As for sound... does this float your boat?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmBUPw58xL8

If it does, then maybe an '80s Aria might fit the bill.

I saw a YouTube video on a rare as rocking horse droppings ibanez iceman which would have fit the bill, but said axe is 20 years out of production and probably £steep, if possible to find at all. It was *the* sound, though...
Which vid? I've never knowingly heard an Iceman outside a demo.
