1.
Space is also a 'note'. Space is paramount. Space is 'music'. Space is as essential a musical tool as any musical note. Make space your primary consideration. Think of space as oxygen, when it's not there you can't breathe, space helps music breathe. Make space the essence of your musical decisions. Here's an example of how I use space when I write a bass line. http://soundcloud.co.../you-always-did
Indeed. But at the same time I'm still always overcome with thoughts of 'Well, is that bass line REALLY right for the song?'

  2. I know I can play and I know can compose bass lines that will do, but I'm still fighting the urge to fill every possible subdivision of time with a note.

It's also very rarely I can listen back to a recording and go 'yes, that bassline is finished.' I always think of other things I could do instead, or the next time round in the same tune or what have you. Out of interest, how does anyone else know when their bass line is 'done'?

My VM had rusty screws and pole pieces after 3 gigs! (see my other post about acidic sweat!) but I've kept the screws on as it looks more authentic :)

    I think I'm the same y'know :P

Does the rust affect the pole pieces at all? My '91 had the rusty bits when I got it..

I hope they are. I'm getting one Friday.

Worth the money, as you can see is the general consensus :)

  4. I tend to wear just t shirt and jeans, luckily the rest of my metal band do a similar thing so we look like a unit on stage, but we don't really stand out from the crowd otherwise.. No backdrop either (Couldn't convince them it was a good idea, they went for flyers instead o.0), so there's little in terms of image for that band..

I had a Squire P once, it was crap, that's the price you pay for being cack handed, it's hard to try before you buy

    I thought he used a Rick? :P

I have an Indonesian Squier Jazz circa 1991, and an '11 VM Natural Jazz, both of which are my 'go-to' basses for everything. They've not been modified either AFAIK, so the Indonesian has rusty polepieces and everything!

  6. I started with Origin Of Symmetry and Absolution. I'll give you a tune from each to get you started.

Have fun, this band have some cracking bass lines in their repertoire :)

  7. Likewise, the only thing I heard wrong with Blur's performance last night was Damon. Probably my ears/sense of timing, but I genuinely think the rest of the band did a decent job.

I don't think there's anything wrong with modern bass players either - it's just that the more famous ones stick in our memory, for example McCartney or Sting, despite my having seen local bass players who are not that much older than myself and are (imo) superior to the likes of Wooten, Entwistle and Bruce.

But then, nobody's heard of Liam O'Brien, a 24 year old hip hop bass player from Cheshire have they? :P

  8. They didn't say whether it was just the output stage or not - I don't know enough to have thought to ask to be quite honest with you.. I'll have to find another tech locally so he can assess the damage and helpfully translate the findings..

  9. Ok, I gotta problem. at practice the other week my Behringer BXL3000A 1X15 combo blew up. I took it into the shop and they gave it back to me, claiming nothing could be done for it. Further conversation revealed that the power amp and speaker itself is knackered, however the PRE-amp is fine.

First of all, what does this mean in laymans terms?

Secondly, would it be possible to remove the cab unit from the combo, then buy an appropriate cab, and use it as a half-stack? I know little about impedance and ohms and all the rest of it, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing.

  10. There very few decent bass players in my area, so the bands I'm in would have difficulty finding a bass player that a) is local and B) can actually play the material.

I have been having doubts about the metal band though, since last week I've been very self-critical about my ability to play the songs, and where I fit in with the rest of the band personality-wise. Added to the fact that I contribute very little to the band musically - most of the songs are written by the drummer and guitarist together.

So.. If there was more talent around, I have no doubt whatsoever that I'd be replaceable.
