As I said above -- if you take out the existing preamp, you're left with what is effectively a knobless passive Jazz bass that happens to have a battery box (well, 2) already fitted. In theory, it will take any preamp that will fit in a standard Jazz cavity.

    Thanks for that.

I guess I need to play round with the EQ a bit more. I noticed quite a big quality jump in overall tone and sound when on a gig playing between this and my USA Fender Jazz select active 4 string. It might be cheaper to go out and get a sadowsy preamp pedal and play the Sire in passive mode. I'm not saying the preamp isn't good, just couldn't really dial in a tone I was completely happy with.

  2. Hi all, just wondering if anyone has swapped out the preamp and/or pickups to enhance the overall sound quality on one of these? - without altering the bass itself.

Any recommendations appreciated. I love the sound of my 4 string USA Fender select active Jazz and the quality difference is quite noticeable.

I'm a novice when it comes to this type of thing so any advice is appreciated!

    Many thanks

  3. Hi guys,

So I've whittled my first 5 string down to these 2 basses.

I'm after opinions from players who have owned one or both of these from playability and sound/tone perspective.

I believe the Yamaha is a 35" Scale and I prefer a 34" Scale so I'm leaning more towards the Ibanez although I've never heard one in the flesh nor can really try one out so it would be a blind purchase.

I play Funk/Dance/soul/R&B with occasional slap - so would the Ibanez cut the mustard tonewise?

Or should I deal with the 35" scale yamaha if it is in a different league?

    Many thanks

  4. Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a 5 string bass, - this after 25 years of playing 4 strings. I currently play a Fender USA select active Jazz 4 string which is the most comfortable bass I've ever owned and played. I play in a Funk/Dance covers band with occasional slap etc etc.

I'm not really in a position where I can sit in a shop for hours on end trying different basses out.

I have smallish hands - so neck comfort is vital as will be the string spacing.

Also I don't have a big budget nor want to spend a lot of money just incase I don't get on with it.

Any help / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Max budget (at a push) is £500.

    Thank you guys!!

  5. Keep changing my mind on this!

In mint condition and comes with Rack ears. Boxed as new with all the gubbins, and less than a year old. Very clean amp which can go from vintage to modern sounding via the taste knob. Fantastic little Amp and can go very loud. I am now after something else.

I am willing to trade for a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 (which must be in Vgc) + cash my way.

    Based in Swindon.

    Thanks
    Freddie

  6. Just traded a Sandberg for a Fender Jazz with Dave - he's a very pleasant chap, very easy to deal with, he was true to his word in the condition of the bass. I'm very happy and wouldn't hesitate to deal with again. A credit to Basschat - Deal with confidence!
