I've just realised....I must be one of the longest serving newbies in the history of this site.....
hmm. not sure i want to be thinking about dead gorrillas while i'm playing.
You don't have to. It's just a little starter to get you going with remembering. Once you know a piece anyway, you're not thinking about it with your analytical mind, it's already wired into your subconscious. Funny though...imagining you hitting bum notes and the band moaning while you stand there thinking about dead gorillas and drain guys.....

When I was 40 it was wooden ships and iron men......Well, not quite.....I'm just being dramatic because the worms in the garden always lick their lips and point when I'm around........
Nope, that'd be the enharmonic equivalent of C and F depending on what key you are playing in
I'm afraid I've always been a bit of a Ry Cooder man...."If music sounds good then there's nothing more to analyse." Not so good I suppose if you play for the London Philharmonic orchestra...
I've used this method for languages before and it works. Hadn't thought of trying it on the bass. I've always looked on my inability to remember the fretboard as being similar to my inability to learn the x tables at school. To this day I have to think my way through all but 2x, 5x & 9X. You wouldn't notice if I was reciting them but in my head I'm adding as I go!! I will give this a shot.
I first learned this from a mate many years ago who could remember numbered lists of random items and got it right every time. Once he showed us how it was done it was incredible the way the image and hence the item just popped into your head. I use this to remember all my credit card numbers and any changes and even the cards I don't use often are recalled as soon as I apply the image phrase.
I did have one. Lovely warm valvey tone from the gain channel. I used to use it with the MB115 cab at gigs, but at practices just on its own. To be honest, it didn`t need the 115 for the gigs I did (punk gigs, in pubs with 100+ capacity), but I bought the pair of them together, so best to use them both, and the 115 did add some depth and size to the sound. Some people on here have had reliability issues with the MB range but so far I`ve had: MB4210 combo MB450H head MB115 cab MB410 cab MB15 prac combo (still got this) And not a problem with any of them.
Nice one. I've got a MB4210 coming tomoz What about best position, height off the ground on it's own? Do think maybe Marshall have cleaned their act up with the unreliability issues and are keeping the price low to attract new buyers?

Thought I'd save myself the hassle of searching anymore and ask if anyone is using Marshall MB4210 combo and gather some tips for using this amp either on its own or with a cab etc bla blah blah.......

For anyone struggling with their memory and notes on the fingerboard, there's a technique in memory called rediculous association. You can make a numbered list of things and associate each one with an image or scenario. Surprisingly, you will be able to remember the list because the image is called to mind by the subconscious very easily. Anyway, rather than going too deep into that, I'll explain about this little fingerboard technique. I don't know if it's been tried before, but going on the premise that nothing is new, it probably has. Ok here goes. Your open strings E A D G will represent "Eat A Dead Gorilla" Stay with me now, just in case you think I'm on some kind of exotic drug. Your 3rd fret would be G C F A# "Get Colonel For Attack Sharpish" Your 5th fret would be A D G C "A Drain Guy Comes" Your 7th fret would be B E A D "Big Elephant At Daybreak" Your 9th fret would be C# F# B E Now, there are sharps here so you have to be imaginitive. "See (C#) sharps. Find sharps (F#) Behind Eggs" (Sharps are hypodermic needles) Stay with me before the drugs wear off! This should only take you a few minutes to complete, but you will be amazed at how you remember. The idea is that you pick up your instrument. Pluck the first open strings E A D G and repeat the sentence as above whilst imagining eating a dead gorilla. Sounds crazy, but it works; try it! Now go to the 3rd fret and do the same with each string using the relevant sentence as above. Some of you will probably go off shaking your heads and saying "The poor guy has lost it" and some will try this and be pleasantly surprised. Don't forget....this technique is called rediculous association. You can also use it to memorise credit card numbers, pin numbers etc....The more rediculous and unlikely the images, the easier it is retained in memory. You don't have to use my images, you can pick your own, which is better. As for the other notes. You will notice there is a pattern, so knowing a single note, you will through a little practice know the notes immediately above or below it. But for starters, this technique although appearing to be little bizzare will give you a kick start.

Gotta go now. Thanks for the links, ladies. Be lucky......
Oy McCartney learn to read music or you'll never get anywhere.
I read somewhere in a bass review that McCartney's bass playing was all over the place...... Musky, please come in, but leave any tab coal outside - stomach acid is high in here.....
May I suggest use this Tux Guitar in combo with this 911 Tabs I use it all the time. Find the song you're looking for on 911. Find the Guitar Pro tab and then download it into Tux. You can then play it back in a sort of midi version, take out the other instruments to leave an isolated bass track, slow it down, it comes with std notation. But as with any of these sometimes the accuracy is suspect. Generally though I find it saves oodles of time. Especially as I don't think you've probably got the time to sit around working it out by ear.
I use 911, but thanks for tux link. I was going to knock up some bassless tracks on my studio, but it's the time thing. I've pretty much got Mr Big in the bag now so the other stuff I think we'll be playing will come ok. I've just got to stop thinking like a six string guitarist and get into the bass groove.
Cool, I'm over the other side of the Mersey. I think if you're using tabs to get a basic footing of a tune then it's hardly a crime, but if you can get using your ear to figure out songs then you'll find that sooner or later the need for tabs will diminish and your musical ear will no doubt improve
Cheers. I've explained further back that I'm using NERO to split tracks up, play along with the sections then join them up again. Tabs just help with part of it to speed it up a bit. I've been a guitarist for 43 years; don't read music. Could never be bothered to. My daughter does. Got grade 8 flute at 14, but doesn't improvise so well.
Absolutely not your fault, you weren't to know! Where abouts in Liverpool are you based mate?
I'm over in Huyton. DAMN! Now that's torn it.....
Please nooooooooo! Not another thread discussing the merits* of notation and the evils* of tab (*switch as applicable)
Sorry guys, not my intention to throw coal on the fire you're fighting. Just after some links. I'm more into the Ry Cooder philosophy "If music sounds good then there's nothing more to analyse." Settle down, I don't want to get banned for starting a war..... I like it here. "Bass lessons near Liverpool available, get in touch if you're interested!" Nice plug!

You're the man. Cheers, buddy. I looked on there but couldn't find it. Damn these WW2 spectacles..... Now all I need is some speed so I can go at it 24/7......
Oooohhhhh bold early post. Fair play. You'll soon realise that I can't stand tablature and will always recommend a combination of learning to read and ear training instead.
I've actually been on here 3 years. I don't post much due to heavy involvment in the healing process. I'm a novice bassist and at present trying to get up to speed for a gig in the summer. Bassist friend of mine died and some old band members are putting together something to honour him and also to benefit a local charity. The guy was a seasoned bassist so you will understand I'm on a learning curve as I haven't played any covers for years and want to make a good job of it. At the moment I'm working on Free Mr big and the solo section, which I couldn't get the tab for (original studio one) so I've taken to splitting up the track with Nero and working on each individual section. Once played in WMP it repeats so no need to keep stopping. It's very similar to the original, but with my own stamp on it. The tabs would speed things up a bit. I'm really enjoying bass - it's a whole new experience. Thanks for the replies, ladies......
Nice return, Sir and welcome. Thing is, we've just come off an extended and thread about the merits of tab vs reading. There may be some residual vibes hanging around. The only thing I'd say is avoid the bassmasta tab site. A number of us have found viruses on there.
Nice one. I've actually been on that site so must have been lucky.
Hahaha. In the OP's defence Doddy, we are a bass forum and we do know loads of good ones... they just all happen to be tabbed out in standard notation
I didn't think I'd find the three stooges so early on in my membership. Keep up the good work lads...or is it girls?

Looking for some bass tabs links. I know there's loads of them out there, but as this is a bass forum I guess the best ones will be known by folk here. Particulary looking for "Little help from my friends" Joe Cocker version for starters.
