I don't think I've ever quit a band. However I've been in a few that simply fell apart. No structure, members on different pages, no real committment.

You must have the patience of Job. ;) IMO life is too short for that kind of thing.

  2. I quit two bands because I seemed to be the only one who was doing my "homework" and coming to the rehearsal prepared. The others seemed to think that rehearsals were for learning material as opposed to the whole band tweaking or fine tuning what they learned in order for the band to be a tight unit. I put up with this for a while, but eventually got fed up looking at/listening to people working out parts at rehearsals, that they should have done before hand.

  3. IMO unless you are going to be playing the likes model music.. (a la Miles" "Kind of Blue" album).. it would be more beneficial to concentrate on CHORD TONES. As your musical interest is rock orientated chord tones would serve you better.

  4. An important issue for me would be to have someone who is prepared to negotiate a playing volume that suits everyone and who won't drown others out with excess volume. In my experience this would generally apply to guitarists.

Granted, this would come under the "professional attitude" banner, but I thought it was worth a mention.

Might sound daft but do you use a mobile regularly and do you use same hand to operate it. I play bass with a pick but also admit to using my smartphone a lot and texting and scrolling with my right thumb. I started getting a lot of pain in my thumb and hands. I still use pick the same but operate my phone with my index finger and pain has gone.

Agreed. Sometimes injury problems are not bass related...they are just aggravated by playing. Having said that, there is a good chance that the OP's problem IS bass related, considering he is playing for six hours a day with bent wrists. ;)

OP...here is Todd (the guy in the FT clip) playing some jazz utilising the FT.

I had a look at that and I can see how this is helpful. I may have to try and adapt this technique slighty though as I have an old injury on my right shoulder, I could imagine trying to do a whole gig like this will cause me problems. I messed around with my strap a little last night and I've managed to find an angle that seems to work, my right wrist is not bent at an extreme angle and my fretting hand is still comfortable. I'll try playing like this for a while and see if I continue to get pain in the hand.

Yes, keep experimenting until you come up with a safe technique that works for you. In the previous clip the guy talks briefly about the "Floating Thumb" technique.

Below, it is explained in more detail. If you decide to opt for it, remember that it can take a while to be comfortable with it. Granted, your shoulder injury will be a factor in this, but using this technique can help to reduce various hand and wrist problems caused by playing with a bent wrist.

Lower your strap. It might be ok for your left hand, but doesn't sound right for your right hand. You need to find a compromise position that suits both.

    +1.

    OP...this clip is worth watching.

  8. Wearing the bass too high or too low can contribute to injury problems as either the plucking hand wrist or the fretting hand one is bent. Playing with a bent wrist can lead to carpel tunnel problems. A good compromise is to wear the bass at around belt buckle height...regardless of whether you are a pick or fingers player.

It might be worth checking out the symptoms for radial and median nerve damage online to see if that sounds like a it's the culprit, and then speaking to your GP if it sounds like this is what you have.

+1. While some discomfort is to be expected when changing from bass strings to acoustic guitar ones, what the OP describes sounds a bit severe.

A visit to the GP and perhaps a referral to a hand specialist might be prudent.

Crusaders where quite lucky to have the guest artists they did fronting them - Randy Crawford, Bill Withers, BB King, Joe Cocker, Hugh Masekela. Wouldn't kick any of those out of my band!
In fairness, the Crusaders (previously the Jazz Crusaders) were a world renowned band long before they started having guest artists "fronting" them. It is not as though they (the Crusaders) needed the exposure that such artists bring.

It gives me the arse, this 'let's ride on the back of the kudos of a Jazz festival without actually playing any Jazz. It's bad enough when VAn Morrison and Jools Holland get headline slots but Wilco Johnson? Ridiculous.
You could also look at it another way. Jazz is getting "exposure" to people who are not familiar with it. After seeing their non jazz artist(s) perform, some people might hang around out of curiosity to hear some jazz being performed. Who knows...they might even like what they hear and seek out other jazz artists. Jazzers are always complaining that it does not have the following it deserves. Would this not be a good way of gaining potential fans ?

Sometimes I think that jazz fans actually LIKE the idea of it being a minority interest, as it adds weight to the elitist concept.

The above ...from a jazz enthusiast of over forty years. ;)

Bob Berg, one of my favourite Tenor players. His Soprano playing was pretty special as well.

    Love this album.

Yep...great album. I think it was one of his first ones.
