    These could both apply to me! I had Tinnitus before I started playing, only mild. I didn't start out in really loud bands, we had 100watt amps back then lol. My real problems came after doing the big gigs with massive backlines. No one thought about ear protection then! I've had a burst eardrum and am now partly deaf. I do have special ear protection now.
    I guess I've had it so long now I just ignore it most of the time. :gas: :rolleyes:

    I heard a rumour that Lagacy strings are made by Rotosound. I did try a set but didn't like them. I prefer the zing myself, maybe someome here can help.

    Big thanks for all your replies guys. guess I'm gonna have to get hold of a few different sets. I have tried a few over the years but always ended up back with the Rotos. Time to try something different methinks. I use flats on my fretless didn't really like them on fretted basses.

    Spike I used Rotos on my Ricky for ten years of gigging without serious fret ware. :unsure:

    I suspect this has been done before, so humour me please lol.

    I was chatting with a couple bass player mates last night and we started talking about this subject which got me thinking (big mistake). :blink:

    I've been using Rotosound strings since I first started playing many years ago. I sometimes use Elites & mostly 40s. I've always liked the clanky sound they produce, and the price. The downside is they can be a bit rough when sliding.

    So what do you use & why?

    :D They are great basses. They can feel a bit heavy though, my fretless certainly is after a night of gigging lol. I nearly decapitated my guitarist with the Buzzard once! :o

    Loads of great comments here!

    I'm known as a bass player, I'm asked to do deps as a bass player, studio work as a bass player, guest spots as a bass player. I do play guitar and mandolin sometimes, but bass is what I'm known for!

    Not sure that answers the qustion though. I suppose it's when you first get acknowledged by the public in a band really, otherwise you simply fall into the 'bedroom player' slot.

    I tend to play my own style on most covers, leaving the bits in that matter, like the solo in 'Alright Now'! To me it's all about how we feel the song. I'm actually better known for my bass improvisation now and people come to see the band partly for that. We've even added a bass solo to 'Badge' which goes down well! :mellow: If I were doing a tribute I'd play it as near as possible to the original, allowing for the dynamics of the band. Playing original songs allows freedom to express yourself.
    If I'm asked to play something in a certain way I will but for me it's about putting my own stamp on a song. Most covers have set bits you have to play anyway so you do need to get those right.

    One of the worst covers I heard was this guy in a 60s covers band playing root notes to 'My Generation'! I just wanted to grab it and show him how. :shok: :lol:

    hiding basses, tut, tut lol. Westone Thunder! Never owned one of those, found a couple on Ebay recently, but didn't follow them. You're right they are heavy, but they did have good tone for their day. Hope you find a good one soon.

    I sold my very first bass, wish I hadn't. If it was me I'd sell the violin bass, if you decide you want one again get a Hofner. You could just keep them all and buy another lol.

    Hi just been reading this thread. Seems to me there are many factors to think about, it's never clear cut. Years ago I was playing in an originals band, We played a number of short gigs for nothing to get the band known. We offset the cost by doing paid gigs. I'm like most musicians, I simply love playing, but as it's all I do I need to earn so apart from charity gigs, and the odd festival I only do paid ones now. Although I have been known to help out friends sometimes for fuel money. I don't have an issue with bands playing for nothing, though I know some who do. I do think that musicians should be paid, after all even as a hobby it's not cheap these days (if it ever was).
