  1. Will watch this tonight.

I've loved this band since hearing Cult of Personality on a pullout plastic record form a guitar magazine my mate had. Blew us both away.

I saw them in Melbourne in 92 and the were incredible. The whole band were amazing but Doug Wimbish was just spellbinding.

My mates and I went out to the only club open on a Sunday night in Melbourne in the early 90s and my mate rushed up to me screaming "Living Colour are here!" We didn't really believe him, but they were easy to spot!

Full of Dutch courage, I went up to Doug and told him I'd loved the show. He literally turned his back on the beautiful woman who was chatting him up and talked bass with me for what seemed like an hour (it was probably 10 minutes!). He was such a generous and friendly guy. He introduced me to Vernon Reid, who was more interested in the beauty he was chatting up (I don't blame him either!).

I tried to persuade him to try surfing, but I don't think I was very convincing! What a fantastic band!

Zoom MS60B £50-60 used... it'll do everything you need and more.

Thanks, they look perfect, but how do you scroll through patches?

  3. Thanks.

I've never used amp or can sims, I'm pretty happy with the tone of my amp and cab.

Anything helix is going to be outside my budget, but the zoom pedals are on my radar.

  4. Hi everyone,

It seems my Boss Gt1B has died (I haven't ruled out it being fixed, it could be simple, but - GAS . . .) and I'm considering what to replace it with.

When I was in a Madonna cover band I needed lots of synth-type sounds that I could (almost) replicate on the Boss multi, but it did have limitations of effects blocks. I'm now playing in a rock-ish band that doesn't need much more than a bit of valve-like grit.

I would like (but don't really need right now, but who knows into the future) octave, filter, some modulation, fuzz, and delays/reverbs - basically all multi effects' lists. I feel like I could get away right now with a valve pre/DI that wouldn't have to be actually valve based. Oh, and my budget is tiny to not really existent!

My one big question is how do people manage single pedals when you need different sounds out of the pedal within or between songs? I built patches for each song on the Boss and then just flicked through them at will. How do players manage a complicated pedalboard with multiple sound changes live?

  5. The guitarist/songwriter/bandleader/brother in law never had a spare. So it was really, really funny when he broke a string at a 'festival' (shoddy gig in an old.man's pub) and borrowed on from another band. We were in the indie scene and his tele had to be replaced by a headless 80s cricket bat style guitar. Hilarious.

  6. I've got reaper running and can record OK,  my main problem is midi.

I can import a midi file, but I can't get it to make any noise. I also can't install any more apps on laptop as its for work and I'm not an admin (reaper is running off my hard drive).

I had all christmas holidays to sort it and hit the 'non admin wall and gave up.

    It is indeed frustrating.

  7. I did this for a one off gig. It was a blast. Drummer and both guitarists were in a band and I'd just returned from a long stint away. We rehearsed a couple of times and played our 'best of'. It went down well and was fun, but there was no suggestion it become any more than the one off.

  8. Thanks.

I've looked at it (just re-watched a few reviews), but I keep coming back to a SA C4.

I've built some synth patches in my Boss GT1-B which sound useable, but not spectacular. I've also started using the -1 Octave settings and messed around with that. I just don't really know which way to go.

And my budget is tiny! Hence the Behringer interest. Although a TC Nether can be found cheaper.

  9. It's also very cheap, which sounds good to me!

I'm trying to decide on a route to some synth-like tones and if I go the individual pedals route, I'll need an octave pedal.

I haven't seen too many bass reviews (and I don't really know what I'm looking for in terms of an octave pedal for this outcome) so it's good to hear that it works.

  10. My first 5 string. Something cheap, humbucker(s) and a maple fretboard,  only because that seems to be the opposite of what I do have.

Some way of scratching the synth sound itch I can't seem to shake. Either a cheap series of pedals,  a SA C4 or a quality multi unit that I could build some presets with.

And a one cab solution. Even though I'm only playing in my house!

  11. I keep thinking about this as a 'better' solution than my Boss GT1 - B.

The only thing I don't like about the Boss is having to choose from 2 groups for a lot of the effects and that limiting what you can put together. But if this does the same thing then it's no better.

I started playing with my fingers, switched to a pick for six or seven years in the 80s and then back to fingers in 1990. I've no idea what picks I used all those years ago, only that I never felt 100% comfortable using them compared to fingers.

    This!

I never used them as much as that, but I feel some techniques will need to be learned.

I honestly don't get these type of what's-your-favourite-colour? type threads.  OP has used a pick previously, but is asking for plectrum recommendations and how to use them.  What follows will inevitably be dozens on well-intended posts suggesting plectrums of various makes/thicknesses etc.

Come on!  The OP purports to have been born in 1972.  They're 52-ish.  It's like riding a bike or tying your shoelaces.  If you've used one previously, you know what you've used, whether you were happy with it and you simply don't forget.

    Please.

    Not really.

I last used one in the early 90s. I have no recollection of what thickness. I just wondered if things had moved on since then and if so, what were people's experiences.

    No more or less.

  14. And thanks for all the recommendations.

Once you've found the right one, how many do you have at a gig? Do you lose or drop them?

I'm not worried about the audition, but I feel nervous about being left pick-less in the heat of the moment. I suppose I could always just play with fingers, but then the tone would be all different.

I’ve loads of picks so PM me your details and I’ll send a few over if that’s any help.

Wow! That's very generous, thanks. I don't mind going to my local music shop and having a look at what they've got and buying a few different styles (although browsing for picks is pretty lame, isn't it!).

  16. As stated in the title, really!

I haven't played with a pick for decades and I have an audition coming up with a few songs that really need it to nail the sound.

Firstly, which picks do you recommend for a pick-averse bass player.

Secondly, how the hell do I use it?

  17. When the singer's group chat posts started getting weird I was alerted to the possibility that this wouldn't last. After a number of members quit I was unsure how it was going to go. But when the singer left her own band it was really obvious that the band had folded!

Spoke to services at Ashdown, nice guy he's looked the serial up and it has warranty until next Feb anyway so may have a punt! Seems to think that's not normal and is fixable at least so I could post it onto them.

I've had fantastic dealings with Ashdown's customer service. If you can wait while it's in transit then I think it's worth a punt.

    Is it cheap?
