1. well, I'm a righty that plays left...
2. I was fundamentally a guitarist when starting to play bass, so I was a pick player for a week. Then I started using my fingers and haven't looked back. Love just watching the elegant walk of a fingered bass!
3. Bass related or just in general? Bass related shenanigans... Mr Big - Addicted to That Rush, live in Budokan 2009. Billy Sheehan is quite a monster bass player... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvxyyuZHM3U In general, I love this live version of Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker sure know how to put a band together... Perfection in my eyes. Lleland Sklar was called out 6 days before the first gig and had to learn the whole set. What a pro, doesn't waver once! Love the arrangement of this live version too. 4. I use a DI Box solely when playing live; I work in a club band. I used to use a Laney RB4 amplifier, which I'd use to monitor my bass on stage and also take the DI out from the amp into the Desk, so that a cleaner signal would come out front (I'm a fiend for having as clean a bass tone as possible). I recently bought the Radial JDI box and it's completely transformed my sound, I've gotten rid of my amp, and have no intentions of going back, the convenience of the box is just superb. Maybe some nights I can't hear myself, but I just put up with it, and keep playing as I would, completely locked with the drummer. Haven't had a complaint yet!
I apologise if I sound a bit dumb, but what does earthing/grounding entail? I'm wondering if it's possible for me to DI straight to the PA, without using an amp at all (I live on the top floor, without a lift, and have back problems!)
The elimination of Ground Hum allows for the signal to be clearer, though I've never found it a problem on my bass guitar, and may just be something that entails with active bass guitars. It is very common for digital devices to have a great deal of ground hum though, due to the amount of electronics involved, i.e Laptops and Keyboards. The rule is to always use your ears, just push the Ground Lift, does your bass sound better than it did before? Keep it there then!
5. Hi Guys, For info on me see here... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=145692 Basically, I'm looking at buying a new Bass Guitar, as I've become quite passionate about playing recently. I'm looking at a bass around £500. I play bass in a clubs band that play Rock & Pop, but I'd like to be using the bass outside of the band too, for any studio work (that's my main passion), and therefore would like as versatile a bass as possible, while still sounding beautiful. I'm quite content keeping it 4 stringed, and the reason the budget it £500, is due to being able to purchase on the "Take It Away" system that the government offer, in which a student can take an interest free loan to buy an instrument, paying monthly payments for 10 months. Previously I set myself a budget of £300, in which I was looking at the Cort Action Bass and also the Hofner Ignition, but with the higher budget set, I'm now thinking of a Fender Standard Jazz Bass, as Fender are a trusted brand. I use a Radial JDI Box to process the sound of my bass. Oh... I'm Left Handed too... What do you guys recommend? Regards, jampottt
6. Hi Guys, This is my first post, so I thought it would be fitting to make it in the "Introductions" forum. I'm jampottt, an 18 year old musician from Middlesbrough in the North East of England. I'm a Grade 8 standard guitarist that fell into bass playing by accident, and ended up achieving my Grade 8 in bass also, on a budget (no named) bass guitar. The bass gathered dust for a few years, upon being asked to join a club band that play cover songs on the weekend to entertain drunken crowds. It pays nicely! Since joining, I've somewhat become passionate about bass playing, and have purchased a "Golman" Acoustic Bass Guitar for practicing, a Radial JDI box to use as my Bass Tone (God Damn I love that box) and am soon to be purchasing my first "real" bass as I'm calling it, as I'm going to pay a decent amount of cash (Looking at the Fender Jazz). Was sent here from another forum, and hopefully will be quite active, as I enjoy forum banter, Hopefully will be purchasing many things from the marketplace too! My bass playing hero is Billy Sheehan, I think he's incredibly talented, and I have a lot of fun learning Mr Big and David Lee Roth songs for the beautiful bass lines he writes. Hello Basschat.co.uK!
