1.
Hi everybody This is my first post so I hope somebody out there can help. I am thinking of buying an Ashdown ABM C210T 500 EVO III 2x10 Combo to upgrade from my Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110. I am fairly new to playing but am learning quite quickly so want an amp that I can use for the small gigs I hope to be playing in the future. I am a fan of combo,s because they seem easier to use. Would I be able to add an Ashdown MAG210T 200 Watt 2x10 Deep Speaker Cab EVO II to add power and clarity or would this be overkill? Any comments on these amps or perhaps alternatives. All help really appreciated. Regards BH12neil
Hi. I have the Ashdown EVO III which I use with a Ashdown Classic Neodymium 2x10. For bigger gigs, I add a 4x10 from the same series, which increases the power output from the amp. The 2x10 and separate amp is more portable than the combo (separate components are also easier to sell) but I can see the attraction. As the combo you are considering is 8ohms (you better check up on this) you would be able to add another 8ohm cabinet and shift more air. Generally speaking, amplifiers usually (but not always) give maximum power output at 4ohms. You get 4ohms by combining two cabinets of 8ohms. If the combo you are considering is only 4ohms (but I'm sure it's not) you would not be able to add an extension cabinet. I like the sound of my equipment, although the EVO III amp requires a lot of tweaking to get the best sound. This will be a considerable improvement over your current Line 6. By the way Ashdown have a customer helpline on their website, and are very helpful. The Mag series of Ashdown gear is fairly basic although the 2x10 you mention is 8ohms. You would be better considering the ABM 2x10 compact cabinet as it would match the speaker in the combo. This is also 8ohms. If I were looking for a combo, I would go for the Fender TV 2x10 or 1x15. Best of luck Regards, KEDO
  2.
These questions have been asked a few times and the consensus seems to be: try before you buy. There are always stories of Squier being told to reduce their quality because they were embarassing the USA Fenders of the time; of really great Mexican instruments and even better Japanese. I had a 70s USA Precision that you could get a 50p piece in the pocket beside the neck, and now have a Japanese neck that I love more than life itself. They just vary so much.
I suppose I'm a but of a gear snob and wouldn't like to own a P bass without the Fender logo. It goes back to 1964 when American was all you could get and I used to spend hours looking at them in music shops. I had a 1964 P bass from new.
  3.
I think, from the widespread opinions on here, that MIJ Fenders - Made In Japan - seem to have the most consistent build/play quality. With the others, it can be a bit hit & miss, though i`ve never owned a Fender or Squier that I thought was bad. I`m a Precision fan, and have had Squiers, Mexicans, Classic Mexican range, Japanese, and US Standards. For myself, I prefer the US Standards, but each to their own. Really, the best thing to do is play a whole load, and pick the one that feels best. I didn`t keep mine for where they were made, just how they played.
Thanks for the advice. I agree that the American Standard is the best from what I have played (I used to own an American Deluxe which was too fancy for an oldie like me) and this is what I would really like. It looks like I could get a better deal on a MIJ but would it be stupid to save a few pounds? KEDO
  4. Can anyone tell me how the various Fender basses rate in order of quality ie Squire, Japanese, Mexican, American etc. I fancy a sunburst/rosewood Precision but already have a good Custom Shop NOS LE Jazz and can't justify spending much money. I see various nice looking, relatively cheap bases around but how would they compare with my Jazz? I don't know how I come to own this as I've been playing for a long time and have only ever owned a Precision. I would trade my Jazz, but it's relatively new and I would lose too much. Can anyone advise as to how low I can go without being disappointed. KEDO

    Fender TV

Hi gjones. May go to Voodoo after all on Wednesday. Don't know what I want to do about my gear. Totally confused! Scared that whilst I find it difficult to move the stuff, I may lament the loss of such a big sound, although I struggle to get definition at times. I wonder if it is because after years of playing, I'm a bit deaf! I would be interested in hearing your Fender TV though. Look forward to meeting you if you go. Jack

    Fender TV
Well funny you should ask that because I have the 15 inch version. They are certainly loud enough, as they have a 350w digital power amp going through a 4 ohm Celestion green label speaker. I've played with a loud drummer at the Voodoo Rooms and John Bruce turned up to 11 (I'm sure you'll know John) so it's more than loud enough for most gigs. Be careful though because I notice you're downsizing and selling your stack and these are hefty beasts (although they do come with wheels). Weird thing is I've been looking for an Ashdown ABM and 15 inch cabinet so if you are in the market for a TV Bassman we could maybe do a deal. If you're interested I could bring it along to the VR jams and you could check it out in a band situation.
Hi gjones. Thought I wasn't going to get any replies to my enquirey about the TV. I have had so much interest in selling the Ashdown rig, but nobody has committed yet. I may be interested in the deal you suggest but don't think I will get along to the Voodoo next time. I think I've had enough for the time being. Do you think the TV 1X15 is better than the 2x12 which is the one I was interested in. Are you local? have I met you at the Voodoo? Thanks for your reply. Jack
  7.
Well maybe have the head for sale as an option too, especially if you are thinking of moving it on at some point. As you know, I'll likely take the 4x10 off your hands if you get a sale for the 1x15 separately
Hi Marky, I may have sold the other cabinet. Are you still interested in the 4x10? Jack
  8. Ashdown ABMIII Amp with Covers and Footswitch with Ashdown Classic Neo Bass Stack and Bought from new less than one year ago Only gigged three times Custom made covers In new condition British/American made The rig comprises a 575watt ABM 500 EVO III amplifier head (into 4ohms) with an optional valve pre-amp. You can view the EVOIII at: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.as...on=abm&ID=6 The Cabinets comprise a 1x15" (Neo 115h) Classic Klystron cabinet with power handling of 400watts and a 4x10" (Neo 410h) Classic Klystron with power handling of 1050watts. They are both 8ohm cabinets which give you 4ohms when used together. They have 'Speakon' and jack connectors and a horn control which can be set to low/off/high. The cabinets have a combined Union Jack/Stars and Stripes badge and I understand from Ashdown that the cabinets were made in the USA and assembled in UK. Included is the dedicated Ashdown ABM footswitch which controls various amplifier functions (Octaver, EQ, valve pre-amp and compressor). You can view the footswitch at: http://shop.ashdownmusic.com/product.php?pi=2428 You can view the 115T at: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=186 and the 410T at: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=187 I had padded covers made for the cabinets and the amplifier which are included in the sale. I bought this rig without thinking and find that, as I am getting on a bit, I can't really transport them on my own. They are less than a year old and represent Ashdown's top of the range Neodymium speakers. They are in new condition and have genuinely only been gigged three times and always treated with care. They have padded custom made covers. I think Ashdown recently withdrew the Neos from their range but they are superior to any current Ashdown speakers on offer. I have thought long and hard about this sale because the sound of the rig is immense. I have mostly used it with a Custon Shop Jazz and it is fantastic, but I really can't handle the size and weight any more. I am going 'lightweight' but don't expect to get the fantastic percussive depth and punch of the Ashdown rig, and will probably pay a lot! The sound of this has been admired and coveted by bassists in other bands. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I am hoping to get £800 which represents about half the new cost.

    Fender TV

I played a Fender TV bass combo today, the little one with the 150w output and single 10" speaker. It is obviously too small for a large gig but is exactly the kind of sound I'm after. Has anyone any experience of the larger 350w combo with the 2x10" drivers. Would this stand up to a fairly large event? Thanks Kedo

Next guest artist is Eric Clapton...............(knowing Ash I wouldn't be surprised) http://tcbfanclub.com/index.php?option=com...&Itemid=117
Ash. What's he like? Still got the opportunity to play with my favourite guitarist. Rather Scotty Moore next time than Eric!

I heard he lives in Dunns. Is that right. Anyway the format was a bit different. He came to play at our local rock open night in Edinburgh and I played a set with him. It was really great fun and was all over too soon.

After a lifetime playing bass, a photograph for the album. More fun than the usual riff (geddit) raff I play with! Jack

  17. This is a great opportunity to acquire Ashdown's best cabinets. I bought this rig without thinking and find that, as I am getting on a bit, I can't really transport them on my own. These are less than a year old and represent Ashdown's top of the range Neodymium speakers. They are in new condition and have genuinely only been used outside my house three times and always treated with care. They have padded custom made covers. I think Ashdown recently withdrew the Neos from their range but they are superior to any current Ashdown speakers on offer. The rig comprises a 1x15" (Neo 115h) Classic Klystron with power handling of 400watts and 4x10" (Neo 410h) Classic Klystron with power handling of 1050watts. They are both 8ohm cabinets which obviously give you 4ohms when used together. This increases the power output from the amp. They have 'Speakon'/jack connectors and a horn control which can be set to low/off/high. The cabinets have a combined Union Jack/Stars and Stripes badge and I understand from Ashdown that the cabinets were made in the USA and assembled in UK. The ABM 500 EVO III head is a 575watt amplifier (into 4ohms) with an optional valve pre-amp and solid state power-amp. There is a dedicated 'Klystron' amp but it is exactly the 500 ABMIII in a bigger cabinet (I got this information from the Ashdown Engineer). You can view the ABMIII at: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.as...on=abm&ID=6 Included is the dedicated Ashdown ABM footswitch which controls various amplifier functions (Octaver, EQ, valve pre-amp and compressor). The sound of this has been admired and coveted by supporting bands. You can get any sound from deep old fashioned R and B to modern slap, it really shifts air. If you are fit or have roadies, this could be the bass amp for you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

    Wolf Bass

Last year I bought this so called 'Wolf' bass (check out the photo of the headstock) made by John Gormall for about £400. There is a problem with the neck just below the headstock where the truss rod is trying to break through, hence the low valuation. However it has been like that since it was new and doesn't affect the playability. It was cutom made for a bass player with a well known band, but I don't know who. Apparently it cost about £2,000 about 20 years ago. I suppose that's possible. I bought it so as not to expose my custom shop Jazz to wear and tear during practice sessions, but have become extremely attached to it, so much so that I use it as my first instrument most of the time. It's full scale, the neck is slim, the action superb and with light strings it's a joy to play. Only trouble is that I am a dinosaur and have never used an active bass before. The pickups and controlls are EMG and there are 5 rotary controlls but one of them is concentric making 6 in all. I mess about with them trying to get the best sound, but haven't a clue as to what they all do. The changes are subtle and it's hard to work out what's going on. Very frustrating. This is a common set up and I'm sure there are bassists out there who can help me with this dilema. Jack
  19.
Just to chip in....Ive used mostly an abm 3 for a couple of years now. Overall I'm really happy with it. Sounds ace; really meaty, defined - but with a slight blur to the tone (but in a warm/good way). Took a little while to get used to it, and a bit of trial and error, but good results in the end. Needless to say I bought the fullstack to go with it (cos I'm a dinasaur, and thought I needed it ) - and regret not looking at other options. Put together, it sounds awesome - though I'm not sure that the ABM 115 adds that much to be honest - and I never really get to use the (better sounding) 410 cos its a pain to shift up our narrow stairs! I'll change the cabs at some point. On the eq....Like others say, seems you can end up all over the place with just a bit too much of something. That might explain some of the reactions from folk who use them for one-offs, and then say never again! (or maybe they just don't like the flavour! fair enough). But for what its worth, as a starting point - I usually set at bass dial @ 11 oclock, mid dial @ 1 oclock, treble at 1 oclock. Both outside sliders up a notch. Inside sliders flat. Valve at 12oclock (10oclock of using the stingray). Shape switch off. Subbass on @ 8 oclock (not needed, but what the hell). Honestly cant decide what to do about the compressor (suggestions welcome!) Doubt that helps very much but it works for me
Thanks, Something elso to try on the abm. I think I have decided to change the cabinets for a Barefaced super 12, only because of their portability. Jack
  20.
I recently downgraded from a ABM rig and slightly regret it now. I love the ashdown sound and will probably end up going back to it when funds permit. I had the Evo II 500, 115 & 410 and it was awsome. All that being said, everytime I pick the BFB Midget-T and the Peavey IPR1600 out of the boot a smile comes over my face...
Thanks Thurbs. The more I hear from you guys out there the more I feel that I should keep the Ashdown gear. My friend is an electronics engineer and together we removed the casing from the evoiii. He was blown away by the build quality and quality of components. A very high quality amp. Jack
  21.
True dat!!
Thanks again bassinstinct Interesting to know about the Jazz being used to devellop the ABM amp. Getting on better with it now but have always had the 'flat shape' button out. I will try it next time although when I tried it before it sounded a little dull. Strangely when I bought may 1964 NOS Jazz it came with wire wound strings. Thought I might try original tape wound. Jack
  22.
Just to add a bit more balance to the Ashdown "carnage" above, I've been using the brand for well over 10 years now with no issues at all. I certainly have never found the sound either muddy or boomy or indistinct, although I've no doubt that it could be given inappropriate EQ settings, but then so could everything else I'd have thought? I'm now using a Superfly Rig including a 2x8 and a 1x15 cab, so I'm also getting the benefit of lightweight gear too, so I couldn't be happier. Ihave the amp set totally flat, although I do go through a SansAmp BDDI and a few pedals before my rig, but I only tend to EQ on the amp to reduce particular frequencies rather than to boost them, FWIW. I did try, and fail miserably, to get a decent sound out of a MarkBass rig in a rehearsal studio some time ago, but that's a whole different issue and a whole different thread!! Frustratingly, it's all very subjective - which is of no help to you, obviously, but I just wanted you to be aware that there are some of us who actually like Ashdown. Equally , there are those who detest the brand so, ultimately, you pays your money and you makes your choice I'm afraid.
Hi bassinstinct. Thanks for your comments. I have been taking stock of various comments received in response to my posting and believe I should persevere with the Ashdown. I have had a couple of helpfull suggestions as to how to set the amp controls for a better sound. I also think I have been loading too much bass into the eq and also with the 4x10 on top of the 1x15, it has been too much in my face. With both cabinets on the floor and more attention to eq, the sound is what I'm looking for. I've also been playing too loud. Thanks for your usefull comments. Jack
  23.
It's a pleasure. I've never really been one for messing around too much with EQ (or effects for that matter), I just set it all flat and tweak to taste. In my opinion it should only be changed from "flat" if it is necessary, not tweaked "just because you can" Note - the pre shape is a kind of mid scooped sound, which can sound "indistinct" if it is no the sound you are after. My P basses sound quite woody and full, so this is not really an issue with me, but disengaging the preshape makes for a more mid-strong sound. I don't like it though. I have only just returned to Ashdown after a long time with Markbass rigs, and to be honest personally I don't find it muddy at all. What basses do you use? If you are near Nottingham you are welcome to spin over and try mine. Chris
Thanks again nottswarick. I use a Fender custom shop NOS 1964 limited edition Jazz bass and a 'Wolf' bass which was luthier commissioned and made by a guy called John Gormal. Im up in Edinburgh, but I travel a lot and you never know. Jack
  24.
Jack, this works for me...using P basses, vol and tone on full: Passive level input selected. Pre Shape On Valve drive On and at half - 12 o'clock I don't use the subharmonics EQ I start with the 3 knobs at half or 12 o'clock and the sliders at mid point, with EQ button engaged. Then I put the treble and mid knobs up to approx 5past, and the bass knob down to about 5to. I boost the treble sliders but only slightly. I have the tweeter in the cab on full. Mine is the evo2 so no compression To my ears this sounds deep but also clear and cuts fine. Everyone on stage can hear it and the DI (set post) sounds ace. Hope this helps
Thanks nottswarwick. I'm really looking forward to giving these settings a try. Jack
  25.
For what it's worth my ashdown rig is big sounding but not wooly. The EQ is very versatile and I find it easy to get q good sound. And this is coming FROM a markbass set up. I have hear that the 15s from ashdown can be muddy but my 410 is good. Heavy though.
Thanks Nottswarwick. Can you give me some advice on how to set the amp for a good sound. Do I use the guitar or amp eq. Do I use compression or valve pre-amp. How do I best set up the amp controlls for a good articulate sound? Jack
