I reckon it's the body of your bass picking up the vocals and then feeding back through your own bass amp. Sweep your notch filter frequency until (hopefully) the feedback stops.
thanks ...thats what I was thinking. I don't usually put the bass through the pa - just go through my amp positioned in front of me to the right with bass on the left. I use the high pass filter a lot to control feedback - and usually its ok. Its just when singer starts I seem to lose control.
Wil try the notch filter next time.
And thanks Beer of Bass =- I haven't tried the phase switch - easy enough to test.

Hi I all – I’m a bit puzzled and looking for advice….
My question is …. can a singer’s mic going through the pa, feedback through my bass?
I play in a big band (double bass through lifeline pickup into fishman platinum pro and my own amp). I’ve noticed on a couple of occasions that whilst we can be loud, feedback is under control when playing with the band – but when the singer joins in – it all gets a bit frisky…I’m sort of on the edge of feedback – slow and gradual build up not Hendrix screeching.
Last time I noticed that it happened even when muting the bass strings with my hand….and only stopped when I muted the preamp.
So it is possible the body of my bass is picking up the vocals and feeding back through the vocal mic/pa ?
I've got a notch filter on the preamp but not had tome to fiddle with it to see if that cures the problem.
All advice gratefully received.

I had one done by Jerome Davies in Kent. It was gated extension. He did a great job - cant remember exactly how much but it was not over 700.
Nice chap to deal with too - and I know he's rated by the Healey's .

Hi - I use the platinum pro with my double bass and in when doing pit work...I find its a great way of having tone shaping and filters, compressor, DI and tuner in one sturdy box.
The knobs don't press in but I have never had a problem with them moving.

I've use one on my double bass for the past few years - I find it really useful especially the low pass filter and tuner and it gives another eq point. It is quite sturdy and though its not the smallest I don't mind that - I found the headway preamp a but fiddly for my fat fingers...
I was even thinking of getting a spare.

Acoustic Image Clarus 1R series ii ... Price reduced to £200
Older model Acoustic Image amp includes:
· Single channel but with high/low impedance input for those pesky piezos
· Adjustable high pass or notch filter for rumbling feedback avoidance
· Selectable reverb/echo effects for..... a slappy atmosphere (tbh works well but I've never used it)
· Size around 26cmx23cmx6cm and includes a nice padded roksak bag....for hanging around in bars
These have become the standard amp for double bass. In good condition and all working fine
Having had some bad courier experiences so I would prefer not post – pickup from North Essex where you can try it out . or I'm happy to drive a bit to make a meet up possible.

Think the only time I've used the backup was was when a strap button off .... annoying

I got used to using a footstool on left leg when playing classical guitar. I occasionally use it for bass on my right leg when playing bass sitting- down esp for longer gigs - eg playing in a musical or some big band gigs

Looks a very nice all round package .....

I'd suggest Barrie at Gig Gear in Harlow - not too far away

My experience was that when I started bowing I found German easier - it felt a more relaxed hand position and I could hold it for longer. Somebody told me its common for people who migrate from bass guitar to prefer German. My teacher used French bow and we got on fine....
But I kept trying the French bow - as it seemed better for quicker more agile passages- and after about 18m its sort of clicked and I could hold it for longer without it hurting. I now play with French bow in local orchestra and it just seems natural.
So I'd say - go with what seems most comfortable to you...

I did it once - just slapped the strings on and it seemed to work fine to my limited ears.
Didn't change the nut. Hardest part was sourcing the right high C.

Reasonably - per the picture - usually about an inch to 1.5 inches / (3-4cm) from the bottom
Don't know if its relevant but that's lower than I normally use .... I have mine so the collar bit is about 10inches off the ground....
...my issue has been knocking the bass on leg sometimes so I have bodged extra foam padding on two legs- unsightly but it works.

yes Im surprised too...mine has been in use pretty much every day for past 3-4 years without a problem.... do you tend to (ahem) spread the legs out quite wide??

Barefaced Big Baby (Generation 1?) Price DROP £300
This is one of earlier Barefaced cabs – same size as the original 15” Compact but this one has 12” speaker and 6.5” mid-range unit. The nearest I can find on their websites is this for the Big Baby T which also has an additional tweeter. https://barefacedbass.com/product-range/big-baby.htm
Size= 25.5" high x 19.5" wide x 13.5" deep (64cm x 48cm x 34cm).
Weight = prob a tweeter less than 36 lbs
Overall the cab is in good nick no major dents or scratches. Its covered in that bumpy cold scrotum effect paint that Barefaced used on their early cabs – seems to have lasted well. The handle is not in a good shape – still works but the rubber is coning away. I think Barefaced sell a replacement. Also got a roqsolid basic cover
Sound wise it’s got a lovely smooth and rich bass and strong mids – IMO much nicer than the original compact that I used to have. It’s a great all round cab.
Afraid its pickup only from N Essex – I can drive a bit to meet up if it helps.

Question about feedback via singers mic - am I imagining it?
in EUB and Double Bass
Posted
Thanks for the advice....we don't have an engineer - we just kind a mix on the fly with little of no monitoring. The horns/brass players tend to be a doubtful about using the pa at all - and most of the time they don't need it. But faced with 5 saxes 4 trumpets and 4 trombones I certainly need some assistance - cant imagine how they did it on the old days without amplifying the bass
I guess i need to experiment a bit more in rehearsal - I can ask the singer to adjust her mic to see if that stops it. I'll check to see if they use a low cut on the mixer too.
