I'm going to make one. That price is crazy for a bit of MDF and some foam.

smelly sunglasses? what manner of porn is this?

+1 on the Hofner violin bass. Appalling in every way. Just vile.

Anything with more than 4 strings.
Bongo's = look like toilet seats.
Anything that sounds like a w***y recipe e.g. rosewood and hard maple on specially selected Madagascan mantlewood, highlighted with ebonised accents and hand finished in select Indian shellac... (usually found with with more than 4 strings - see picture of twat earlier in thread) -
Just a heads up for any Stranglers fans. They will be performing on Loose End's tonight.

Count yourselves lucky that you have bass mags to moan about, all I can get (within a twenty mile radius) is tractor & farm trader and Take a Break...

Welcome to the jungle. Probably a cliché but its the first song I learned all the way through...

I enjoyed that.

I might not sleep tonight...

The second player is a well known prog metaller and session musician IIRC. It's some sort of art project (he claims)

I live along the road from Fish out of Marrilion.
Anyone for tenuous? -
Yeah that is the problem. The amp sounded great in the shop at about two-thirds volume. Trying to get the same sound when the speaker cone is barely moving is another story... Headphones it is!
Lots of useful information guys, many thanks. -
I'll try a bit more fiddling around with settings and will move the amp away from the wall, see if that makes any difference. I knew I should have went for a smaller amp to start out with...
Those Amplugs look good. The 'bass buddy' is way out of my budget for the time being.
Next question: What sort of headphones? -
Yeah I thought headphones would be the only easy way. Don't think it has aux-in though! The amp sounded brilliant when the guy demo'd it in the shop...
Thanks for the info. -
Hey guys
Needing a bit of advice on my set up. I live in a row of small cottages and need to keep the volume down to avoid annoying neighbours. This means when i'm practising the amp is barely above one and a half and no matter what I change it doesn't seem to make any difference to the sound. (which i would describe as a woolly thump). The amp is a Roland Cube 100 and my bass is an Aerodyne jazz so should sound pretty good. Do I need to get a smaller amp that I can turn up?
Cheers - Ben -
Surely the vibration damping effect of your body/arm in contact with the guitar body would have a greater effect when through-strung?
Just a thought. -
A few surprises in there.

Good thread, very inspiring. Hope I will be posting something similar in the future.
One thing I hate as a newbie (haven't got as far as lessons) is trying out gear in music shops. never felt more self conscious in my life! Why do they have to plug you in and turn you right up? I'm sure they all piss themselves laughing when you leave. -
Maybe there should be a sub-forum for folk who own basses but can't play them.

I personally wouldn't use a router on something like a guitar neck without a serious amount of jigging and testing beforehand. I was taught to put fine edging on using a scratchstock, which can be easily made from a bit of wood and and an old bit of HSS or tool steel (an old jig-saw blade). Very controllable. A quick google will give you loads of plans for making one.
Hope it helps.
Basses that you've never wanted to own.
