1. They aren't just good pop tunes - technically they are interesting as well. Mike Batt had a knack of bringing non-mainstream musical writing to the masses, albeit subtly hidden in catchy tunes. All sorts of genres are included from Mozart to Reggae to Barbershop, many on a single album.

And yes. I have Womble vinyl. And if I were to be visiting the mudpit at Worthy Farm, would be wombling along to their stage in plenty of time!

Should I be looking for my coat? :)

  2.
I'd have thought we had enough members of the BC Bristol Massive to hold our own Bash here :)
Not sure what I could bring to the party at my current level, but I'd certainly be up for it Rich...

  3.
I bet you'd be great. Everyone can dance if they've got a sense of rhythm! :)
Maybe with a specific dance, but I think any improv would be strictly classed as "dad dancing"... :)

  4. I'm teemostly, so any alcohol (past a single cider shandy) has a noticeably negative effect on me.

Not that I'm likely to be playing in public for a little while yet!

  5. I think there is also a tendency here to mix technical ability with musical ability. There's a big difference between being able to play notes like Wooten, and having the ability to compose/rearrange music so that it strikes the heart of the listener.

I also think music found me (I've been a music addict since a small child), but have never managed to compose anything that even warranted showing it to someone else, let alone doing anything else with it. I put that down to not really having a creative side, despite trying.

  6. Cool, am liking them so far...cheers guys.

Not exactly what I was looking for (haven't checked the Mac one yet), but some great tools there. The Vic W one is close, and should help with placement - hopefully transferring it to the real fretboard shouldn't be too much of a trouble.

Esp useful are the ios ones, as I'm going on hols for a week soon and can't take the bass (missus' orders) so can practice a bit on the iphone!

  7. Hi all,

I'm currently learning my way around the fretboard (i.e. which lettered note corresponds with which string/fret) and thought it would be really handy to have a little program that flashes a random note (C#, F, A etc) on the screen for a predetermined amount of time (say 1 second) so I can then attempt to play that note while it's on screen.

Has anyone come across something like this? If it could play the note as well it would be really handy, but I'd settle for just the visual prompt...

It can be for any platform, Mac, Windoze, Linux, iOS...anything really (ok, maybe not ZX81...).

  8. Definitely have a look at shops, ask the assistant to let you play them and (assuming you don't already know some riffs) try playing the 1st 2nd and 3rd frets, using your index, middle and ring fingers respectively - repeat on all four strings in order.

That will give you a good idea of how the bass feels to you - I liked the RBX170 (and nearly bought one), but found the Ibanez neck too big to be comfortable for my smallish hands. In the end I settled on a 2nd hand VMJ (as in my sig) as it just felt right to me.

  9. Just put a set of D'Addario Chromes on my VMJ, and love them. So much nicer on the fingers, less fret buzz and the tone is just what I was looking for - good thump but still with enough top end to keep things interesting.

  10. look for a file in one of the folders called index.html, and double click it...

...it should open open the page in your default internet browser, which hopefully should be the main page of the old site.

  11. I think what he's saying is that a tab is just a representation of pitch as depicted on a fretboard, rather than notes on a stave (which have other descriptive information in order to reproduce exactly what has been written by the artist, such as length, loudness, overall key etc), and therefore cannot be described as a score.

  12.
Do them both together so you learn to associate the stave with the fingerboard.
Thx - always handy to know I'm heading in the right direction. I really want to learn more about theory, as am enjoying picking out root notes when playing along with songs, but don't know where to take them from there, without copying parrot fashion...

  13. Only thing I use tabs for is if I can't quite hear what a section of a bassline is doing, and need a pointer rather than making it up myself as best I can.

Obv, I realise that if I can't hear it then the tabber might also be guessing...but if we both come up with the same then I know I've a sporting chance of being correct!

  14. :ThumbsUp Bilbo

    That works for me.

I put that I can read tab and wish I could read more. I am attempting to read more music, but at the same time as learning where the notes are on the fretboard.

Should I be pausing one and concentrating on the other, or is doing both the best way?

  15. Apparantly it was the MPAA threatening Bassmasta's owner with a lawsuit that forced his hand - as Songsterr already have a commercial agreement in place, this wasn't an issue for them.

Edit: might explain why they encourage people to use the paid version though...
