1. Nearly 30 years ago (god I feel old now) the originals band I played in would gig for next to nothing but always got paid something, we were glad for the exposure. I remember playing at The Royal Standard in Walthamstow where we got £30 then were asked if we wanted to use the house PA £15 and lights £10 of course we did so traveled from Derby to London and played for a fiver! Was a great gig though and we did it lots of times.

Nowadays I play in 2 covers bands and neither will go out for less than £200, £300+ is the norm and always agree the fee prior to taking a booking. Our diary is full. For private parties we insist on payment upfront. Make yourselves a promo pack with a CD, a biography, some photos showing a crowd enjoying themselves etc. Promote and advertise your gigs too, put out leaflets with your upcoming gigs on and make sure you advertise how to contact you. Set up a website and use social media.

I think that bands that charge £150 or less or even play for free bring the average price paid down for everyone else, DJs get more than that around here.
If a pub wants to book a band they have to be prepared to pay regardless of how much I enjoy it.

Whilst I can sympathize with a pub landlord - profit levels are not what they used to be, they still have higher takings when they have a band on. If they are not making enough to pay for the band then they need to rethink their business strategy - its not the bands fault (unless they are crap and everyone leaves).

And "pah" to pay to play - it would soon fizzle out if everyone said f*** that!

We have shelled out nearly £8k on PA equipment in the last few months (in one of the bands) and slightly less in the other, we also have to buy strings, fuel, beer :P etc,

Best of all, I still love playing and get a buzz out of every gig - but couldn't afford to do it for free.

yeh i keep looking at the x32 and wondering if i can find the cash for it somewhere so how do you run the p16's from it?

sorry if it seems like a silly question but i'm not familiar with it

Cat 5 cable from the X32 into the first one then daisy-chained to the second. You need a PSU for each (which they come with) this way but I couldn't justify another £170 for a P16D powered distribution thingy.

I've set it up so each vocal is on its own channel (4), drums are as per the stereo sub-group, bass, guitars & sampler have their own channels, there's stereo pair for a matrix (like a sub-group) of the fx returns, a solo pair that follows the headphone out (monitor mix) on the X32 for help when soundchecking, the kick drum also has its own channel to add a bit more in the IEMs if required and finally a talkback mix so I can talk to the drummer when needed from the built in mic on the X32.

You can set the levels, pan and eq (including sweepable mids) on each channel and the master mix, also you can set a limiter to protect your ears.

I love it, however it does mean you have to mic everything up and spend a but of time getting the IEM mix right, but once its setup that's pretty much it.

The Bass remains in the Wild West Midlands then...

Anyone gonna pick this beastie up? It got an outing in sunny West Bromwich last night and is probably on the way to The Crown Inn, 23 Main St, Heather, Leicestershire, E67 2QP, next Saturday. PLEASE let me know if you are gonna pick it up there as I'm hoping to travel light next week and if no one throws their hat in the ring, it'll stay at home.

C'mon people, this thing needs to get moving!

I'd have fetched it on the Saturday but we've got a wedding gig.

icastle I bet you know the infamous Tommo the drummer then?

  4. Great photos bluejay thank you.

I saw the band supporting the Stranglers last year (maybe the year before?) anyway both were awesome.
What a way to bring your life to a close, by entertaining your fans and enjoying life to the utmost. Wilco I take my had off to you.

for a desk check out the new behringer x32 desk dont be put off by the name its really a great bit of kit and as far as i know it can be synced to an ipad or iphone too

Indeed just add a WiFi access point and load the XiControl and XiQ apps - awesome stuff.
Only downside is you can't restrict the iPhone app to a specific bus yet, you need to trust whoever has access not to screw your mix.

I'm just sticking all the names into a spreadsheet. If you've signed up, you'll very shortly get a PM regarding contact details to go with this.

Once this has been completed, a copy will travel with the bass and every member involved will receive a copy of the list too.

If you haven't signed up...why not?

P.S we now have QR codes to go along with the bass and for members to push.

No idea how to sign up. Please let me know.

  7. I play in 2 bands,

I provide and drive the PA for Mrs Miggins' Pie Shoppe: 2x BFM Tuba 30 subs & 2x BFM DR250 tops through a PSE Audio controller (crossover) and a couple of Crown amps. We use a Behringer X32 mixer.

Although we stack the tops on the subs as in the pic, we still get a great sound from the BFMs but I know it could be better if the subs were v-plated. Also the titan 39 may have been a better choice but the tuba 30s are awesome!

In the Ant Hill mob we use HK Audio tops and unbranded subs powered by Peavey amps from a Presonus StudioLive 24.4.2

For large venues we also have a 10kW tri amped Peavy rig with 2 2x18 subs plus tops.

I prefer the sound from the BFMs but then again I would as I built them :D

  8. Some good advice so far especially

I don't see any particular problem about gigging at your own wedding . . . . . but it might be wise to steer clear of the groupies.

I'm still undecided but do think 2 hours will be too much.

  9. So here's some MP3s recorded live when we gigged with the X32 a couple of weeks ago.
Remixed the multitracks by playing back from Reaper through the X32 and using the on board effects whilst recording the mix with the built in 2 track recorder. I then converted to MP3 using Audacitiy.

I'm pleased with the results (even though there are a few mistakes in the songs), I will have to concentrate more next gig

PS. Great to see Joe on here, Behringer are being very supportive towards their X32 customers, I'm pleased after parting with my hard earned cash!
