I got hold of a '72 4001 recently which had some routing under the pickguard. It's pretty common when something like Precision pick-ups were added. Depending on how it was done it could weaken things and may have led to the electrics being changed.

Nice to see period pick-ups in yours, they are expensive to replace.

Interesting Is there any extra routing under the pickguard?

In answer to the topic's question, I'd go Fireglo all day long. It's a truly gorgeous finish, plus you get to see the grain of the wood (stunning on Rickenbackers), as well as the Mahogany wings on the headstock. You miss both of these with the solid colours.

I own a Blueburst 4003, and she's a real stunner. I do however still lust over a Fireglo model, and a while back I was thinking of selling her to buy a Fireglo model.

Cracking looking bass Geofio, the fretboard is good warm rosewood. Sorry that you have to lose it so quickly after getting it.

Cheers for the info. I'm kinda looking for an earlier one - although I played a 1995 V63 recently and that had a [b]really [/b]chunky neck.

What year is the V63?

I think that it is very overpriced. Ask for close up photos of the back around the neck plate and look for stress cracks - there is very little wood there between the plate and the bolted neck joint and it is a vulnerable spot.

It bears a remarkable resemblance to this one which sold very recently on eBay...

Good luck with the search, they aren't that common.

Very nice Fireglo Squire. The finish checking may affect the price a little, but in my experience the necks and playability of Rics from this period are excellent. Good luck with the sale.

It's fake - the sparkly inlays are like Bruce Foxton's copy.

The C64 is reputedly a more accurate reproduction of the Rose Morris 1999 import model than the V63. There are cosmetic differences with the pick guard shape etc., plus it has a long style sixties headstock which is reversed in reference to Macca's bass. They also had period correct pick-ups and electrics with the low end cap.

Thanks for the honest info. It's a beauty and it's a good price. My '78 4000 has a slim neck too, must have been a good year.

A modern Rickenbacker high gain should be around 11-12K and a scatter wound toaster something like 7.4K. There were some "hot" re-issue toasters in V63's too though - I couldn't tell you what years.
