1. I've not had a bass string break on me while playing, since I stopped boiling them back in my teens. Whether that's just a coincidence or not, I'm not sure. I only tried it half a dozen times at most, and probably broke only 3 or 4 strings (always the E/D or A).

A bit off topic, but a bit strange, I left my one of my basses at our g****rists' for a week, while he was on holiday a couple of weeks back. It had a fresh (2 day old) set of Ernie Ball Slinkys that had just been gigged when I left it, yet upon it's return I open the case to find the G string broken at the nut. Matey reckons (and I have no reason to doubt him), that it'd been in it's case the entire time. All we can figure, is that maybe with the central heating turned off all week, this somehow caused the string to snap? Odd.

  2.
You can fashion small tubes from domestic piping (the narrow ones, screw cap at the ends, seal one with silicone), fill 'em up with ethanol/meths and use them for dunking your strings and leaving them hanging over night. Just make sure you put a screw hook or similar in the cap that unscrews to attach the string to.

/shamelessly robbed from someone who posted about it on BW.

It'll be better than boiling as the ethanol will dissolve the dirt from the windings, rather than expanding the string so the dirt falls out.
I use this exact method, I think I saw it over on TB originally. Works a charm, I've had good results even with strings that've been recycled 3 or 4 times (haven't tried more than that yet).

  3. LOL, I'll be getting a new monitor in Feburary hopefully once I've finished off my pedalboard (nearly there).

I already have 2 Sansamps always on, I do a pseudo bi-amping thing with an LS-2, one Sansamp in each loop. An extra Sansamp-type device is a bit overkill for what I'm looking for

I might give the MXR Micro Amp a go, though I've heard it can be a tad noisy. TBH I didn't really wanna spend much more than £50. I know there's the EHX LBP-1 but, a few people have told me that it adds it's own character to your tone I want something as clean as possible.

I might just get a cheap EQ pedal and only use the level control. Harley Benton do a decent enough GEB7 knock off, I already own one so I'll have to try it at rehersal tomorrow.

EDIT: Actually bollocks, I'm being completely thick. I'll just get another EQ and put it between my board and passive bass, whenever I use it. That way it has an outboard EQ as well as something to keep the volume equal with my active (provided 15db of boost is enough). Thanks for the suggestions :)

  4. Just brought a Tech 21 Sansamp VT Bass pedal from bassman2790. Very nice guy, excellent communications. The item was well packaged and arrived very quickly. A please to do business with you, would definitely buy from again :)

  5.
I think the phrase "Passive Attenuator" on the front of the pedal says it all...
LOL I should've read the effing small print!

It's honestly barely readable to me, unless I get right up close to my monitor.

  6. Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap no-thrills DI box to me for under 50 quid? I don't need any tone shaping, just the usual 1/4" input and output and XLR and the other usual stuff like ground lift.

One thing I'm not sure about, is whether or not I need should avoid actives or not, since I use a very hot output active bass along with a fair few effects pedals.

I found a couple which I'm not sure about, anyone tried them?

    Palmer Pan 01 passive DI

Orchid Electronics Classic DI (although this one seems to be active)

I hear the Radial Pro DI is a good passive box, but I was hoping to spend a bit less than £75.

EDIT: I should also add, that I'd like to stay away from anything in a plastic box, such as the Behringers. I'd prefer something more roadworthy.

  7. Sorry for the dumb question, but if I put one of these at the beginning of my effects chain, will it effectively make my passive bass an EQ-less active?

I'm thinking of getting one, so I can keep volume levels the same when I change basses. Since it can increase volume, it made me wonder.

  8.
don't notice a volume drop with my small stone infact when it does the lower end of the sweep it gets ridiciously loud
When did you buy yours? I had mine back in 2005, I've also heard a few other people claim the same thing back before the Nano Stone came out. I'm wondering if they corrected the problem, at the same time that they nano-fied it.

  9. Sorry can't help you with the Mistress, but I've had experiences with both the Nano Clone and Stone and both the Small Clone and Stone. First I'll start with the Clones -

I found the Small Clone to be a pretty nice pedal, it wouldn't go as subtle as say the CEB-3 would but it would go subtle enough for most people I expect. What it did do well, was get a really wet and lush, full chorus sound. Lost no bottom end that I noticed, no volume drop.

The Nano Clone on the other hand was just crap IMO, for lack of a better term. It didn't seem as versatile, wouldn't do subtle at all, lost low end and had bit of a volume drop. Simply pants.

    Now for the Stones -

The Small Stone sounds pretty cool at first, nothing mind-blowing, just your bassic no-thrills phaser but it does exactly what it says on the tin...... except it has a really noticeable volume drop. This was a bit gutting for me, since I was really into the sound of the pedal.

All was okay in the end though, as EHX brought out the Nano Stone, which IMO sounds exactly the same as it's big brother, but without the annoying volume drop. Perfect :)

Finally, if you ask me, the Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus (big old sky blue metal versions, not the new ones) owns the Small Clone. I like both and would be happy to gig with the SC, I just like the Cool Cat a whole lot more. Does the big thick lushy sounds even better than the SC, but also does the real subtle stuff really very too. No noticeable volume drop or bass loss either.

  10. Just the 2. A Spector Euro 4 LX (Natural Oil) and an Epiphone Thunderbird (Tobacco Sunburst).

I'm hoping to add an Ibanez ATK300 to my collection, in the not too distant future. Preferably a 90's model if I can find one.

I don't see myself needing more than 3 but who knows? Of course, that's part from maybe something cheap and temporary to trash at the odd gig :)

  11.
+ 1 not a huge fan of them but I played through one on Sunday and it had a lot more options and volume than others in that bracket.
Word. My 150 watt (IIRC) TNT115 kicks my Ashdown ABM300EVOII's arse volume-wise when the Ashdowns's run at 8 ohms/235watts. Those amps have some serious headroom for their rating.

  12.
When I was after a T-bird I tried Tokais, Epiphones and Gibsons. I bought an Epiphone one (Alpine white). I preferred the weight, the neck feel and that you can shim it. Mine doesn't neck dive as I relocated the front strap button. I didn't do a side by side comparison of the tokai & Epiphone as shops that had the tokai didn't have the epi & vice-versa.

The tokai is still a very nice bass, but the epi suited my requirements better.
Similar to yourself, I tried regular Gibson back when I brought my Epi T-bird. There was no way in my mind, that the Gibson was worth nearly £700 more than the Epi. If the Gibson was a 10 then the Epi was an 8.5 IMO. Maybe I just got a crap Gibson and a really good Epi, I dunno, but that's how they sounded and played to me.

Anyway, this thread's about Tokais, what I'm getting at is I want to find a shop with one I can go try.

  13.
if you want phase and filter then you need to check out the pigtronix ep-1
This. If I had the money to buy expensive, boutique pedals, I'd order one immediately.

Thanks for the review, always good to hear about how the new toys in the box sound :)

  14.
Hi,
I guess everybody's got an opinion on Behringer which is at least a thread in itself, but was wondering if anyone's tried out any of the other cheaper brands around such as Biyang, Artec, Belcat etc?
Thinking about getting a phaser & the Biyang one looks interesting http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PH8-Phaser-pedal-Biy...A1%7C240%3A1318

Would be grateful for any unbiased comments from anyone who's experienced such brands. I build pedals myself, but sometimes it's more cost effective to buy :)

    Cheers
    Nick
Would be interesting to see how it compares to the EHX Nano Stone phaser. You can pick them up from around £40, so not much difference in price only reputation.

I've 2 Harley Benton pedals (also known as GLX) which sound as good to me as the Boss equivalents for less than half the price. If you're interested check out their BLM-1 Bass Limiter and BEQ-1 Bass Equalizer pedals. I'm considering picking up their flanger next, looks like a knock-off of a Boss BF-2.

I'm gonna have to see what other pedals Biyang do, looks interesting.

  15.
+1 on the Digitech Bad Monkey, also look out for an old Boss Heavy Metal HM-2 or a Turbo RAT.
I like all of these, although I find the Turbo Rat and Bad Monkey lose a bit of low end, albeit not a graet deal.

The Marshall Jackhammer mentioned by cheddatom is another good one. It's not amazing or anything, but I find it keeps the low end well and worth at least checking out for the dirt cheap price.
