I've decided: I like the gear porn section.

This is more a curiosity question than anything. I don't know, I just enjoy hearing about what equipment different players, and why they use it. So yeah, fire away, what equipment do you use? Amps, guitars, effects, anything! If anyone actually cares, here's my bass and my amp.

To the budget questions, I'd say anywhere between 300 and 800 quid. To the PA related replies, I have a Carlsbro Marlin 6 PA head, with some Carlsbro speakers from the 80's which I don't know the model of, because Dad give me them. I think my PA is backing around 800 watts, but I'm not too sure.

First of all, I rest my thumb on the neck pickup, whereas I see a crap-load of players rest on the/near the bridge pickup. Then, my thumb hardly ever drops down from the pickup, even if I'm playing on the G. If I do drop my thumb, I only got to the E, no lower, and I then start playing the E with my thumb, and the other 3 strings with my fingers, like a classical guitar picking technique. Would you consider this weird? xD

Hey there, I was just wondering what kind of power I'd be needing for playing gigs going from small pubs, to small stage venues, like, academies and stuff. I was thinking of investing into an Ashdown MAG 810 cab with and Ashdown MAG 300 Head. Would this be enough power to be able to heard in a gig?

I'd say it depends how big a band yoollu are. If you're a small, pub playing band, theres no point charging back on stage and play the second half of your set as an "encore." It'd be like a Jazz player stage-diving and doing the whole hardcore neck-whiplash bollocks. If you're a little bigger, then yeah, I'd say one encore is okay. If you're playing large venues, then yeah, 2, 3 encores, it's all good for the fans. But I remember when I went to see Kasabian, they did like 8 encores or some high-end even number of them, and by the end of it, I was just like, "so yeah, you were supposed to be off stage 30 minutes ago, correct?" Ah drunken band-members. *wipes tear.*

Basically, I want to get myself a nice sounding, but sturdy bass for my college travels. I've looked at the VM Jazz quite a lot, as I've heard extremely positive things about it. The only horror story I've heard is that the wood around the tuners give way after some time. How true is this? How well does the sound go against a Fender MIM Standard Jazz? Cheers in advance, Dan
