That type of logo, with the separate 'offset contour body' part, dates from mid '64, and I have never seen the two parts of the logo placed so close together. Sorry to be so anal, but this raises some serious doubts about the bass.

Prior to 1964, the two parts of the logo were this close, it was in 1964 that the offset bit moved to the far end of the stock.

I can only authenticate the fact it is Normans bass, as he let me have a close look and play when I met him at a show in 2009, as per my photo above. On close inspection of the photos on the Baxter site, the extra patent number does indicate a slightly later year, however the "offset contour body" logo is year correct positioning.

Anyway, its Normans bloody bass here, it has more sweat in it than John Leslies handkerchief....its iconic!!

  3.
As a guide (not an absolute), think in terms of the series of letters ABCDEFG. If you have an A, you need a B be that a Bb or B natural and so on through the alphabet. So in the key of F, you get FGABbCDE not FGAA#CDE. In the key of D you get DEF#GABC# not DEGbGABDbD- is this making sense? In a nutshell, you don't want the same note name being used as a natural and a flat or sharp because, if you do, you have accidentals all over the written chart and it looks like a train wreck
I actually understood that, thanks Bilbo.

  4.
Im sorry but was it me or as per usual, was every band bass player on the show tonight slinging a precision or a jazz WTF? Dont get me wrong, i love em but FFS whats that saying about every young bass player in a commercially successful band, sheep or what? Or does the "evil" empire of Leo have the industry's balls in a vice like grip of kudos and commercial nounce? - Discuss....
Why is Leo's empire "evil"???

Why is the supplier always blamed for a prevalence in sales of its products rather than the consumer? Its a buyers market and always has been....no customers, no suppliers.

As has been said above, many people choose Leos products because they are right for them or look good for them, Leo has no ones balls in a vice, its down to choice. Its for this reason that cigarette companies get blamed for people getting ill through smoking, same with breweries. The customer has the final choice wether to buy or not.

Yes, there are better basses out there in some respects, but none satisfy everything required by most players.

  5. I now find myself in effectively a 3 piece band (instrumentally) and Im thinking of giving 5 strings a go. I have a lot of room musically now so think it would be beneficial. Hopefully it will improve my playing too.

Any comments and advice from recent "movers" would be great.

I do not want to find myself with a nice 5 string but just using the B as an expensive thumb rest!!!

    Thanks all.

    Neil

Thanks Clarky, that was the general drift of my post too!
