1. despite taking a so called 'GCSE' in music tech
i have recorded one track :)

taking matters into my own hands , ive decided to try and record at home

can anyone offer me some advice for getting a really big sound from a band
ie- the amount of volume used on certain instruments?
how to stop multiple bass layers from sounding muddy
any must use effects?
how to keep the volume high but make VOX soar over the top? (all of my recordings seem to have the band very quiet)

im trying to 'mimic' a sound like the foo fighters, where everything is balanced, giving a 'wall of sound'

many thanks

2. the nut appears to be worn away
then i slap the A string it pops out of the groove , i had a look athe right hand side is now in a curve shape :)

i think i may need a new nut , but i dont want to poay billions in getting someone else to fix it
i'd like to do it myself

any ideas how i can fix it
any ideas where i can get a new one from?

thanks guys

3. i had an ashdown EB180 combo , was a great little amp

alas

eventually my bass destroyed the cones (probably my poor setup of the actual amp), but i still use the head of it for my halfstack , works a wonder

friends got a mag series 300 or something , says its the best amp he's ever had in terms of reliability

4. if you want to become super fast , just try playing two octave scales with one note per finger ,
for example , a c major scale

1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3
C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C

playing scales slowly and then speeding them up is how i got into playing 4 fingers

it helps being double jointed too :)

5. hi there , ive recently took upon the challenge of solo bass composition.

i'd love some tips as im not very creative

www.myspace.com/nedsimpleton

the main song is idea 1 , however i did manage to record a VERY RAW version of pulling teeth anesthesia by cliff burton as a tribute.

thanks

6.
You're going to get loads of diffrent answers to this.

But so ive been lead to believe...

Main diff..

Build quality
materials are diffrent (wood, electonics etc)
where its made (although they are all mass produced in both US and MEX, I heard 1/8 US you need to sort the neck out, 3/8 in MIM, but thats just hear-say)

If you want to improve it, try changing the bridge/pups/pots/strings,
Personally id slap on a badass ii bridge and Exiler 45-100 strings and leave it as that.
omg
how weird!
when i bought it , i noticed it had a new bridge on it , it has a BADASS BASS || bridge!

7. whats the difference between a fender jazz bass from mexico and a fender jazz bass from the US?

i got a cheap mexican jazz bass and im looking to customise it to the same ... 'standard' as a US one.

8. hi dave

after purchasing a little big muff pedal from recommendations from my bass teacher , i wasn't convinced with the ammount of bass i had
it seemed to sap out the bass yet again , i generally have this problem with distortion

i asked around on basschat for some advice to add more bass with my distortion pedal and i was recommended to get your VT1-Bob The Blender pedal

will this actually work and add more bass to my distortion? :)

many thanks

9.
Thanks for the comments,

Sadly no not a mark king head, Just a Mag 300. I think they have changed color now with the new ones but the red does look similar to The Kings from a distance. The cones did used to shift a bit with big volume from the head when it was just the 4x10 cab, but the 1x15 really helped get rid of that, it was well worth the extra £130 for the 15"
ah right
that may explain why my cones are dieing! really good excuse for a full stack!

still though , i bet thats a bugger to carry around!

10.
Being an avid Mac user for recording.... you could do worse than to pick yourself up one of the new iMacs..... the 20" version is a steal and the performance is great.

I guess it depends on how you want your recording set-up. do you have an area where you will be using the Mac?

Example - I have a project studio which I run a Mac Pro.... indoors for editing I have an iMac.... I run MOTU Digital Performer on both.
something handy to carry around as i travel around , my friend has a studio in his basement.... i work at the local studio doing music technology courses , its so easy on things like garageband

however , brother is doing work on mixing and recording on programmes such as steinberg cubase and logic pro and express...

11.
Suppose it depends how you have the EQ set, but then distorted bass always seems to go AWOL
in the mix, solution usually to boost the level slightly when using it.
my halfstacks great , i broke my old combo amp because my bass is far too powerful , totally blew the cones

at band practise , i literally had the cab almost at full blast , and the cones looked ike they were dieing...
theese are alluminium cones too
