1. That green fretless is gorgeous. I wished I'd known about it ;-) Apparently, it's also a very rare colour.
When I was OW last month, Martin Lee told me the current owner had bought it from someone who hadn't touched it for years. Consequently, it was in really bad shape ; so much so, that the pots had to be drilled out.

Re the pickup spacing, I'd just mail the main man (Chris May). He's always very forthcoming with this kind of stuff.

That's very interesting. The bass pictured is described as a 1983 model and has the older pickup positioning. My 5-string fretless which is a late 83/early 84 has the later pickup position. I wonder exactly when it was changed?

2. Thanks for your detailed reply. The info will definitely come in handy.

I was actually discussing the issue of the electronics with Martin Lee when I was at Overwater last month, and he was explaining the fact that the parts for the older models are no longer available. However, he did say something to the effect that they could probably be custom made if necessary -- at least, that's the way I understood it. I don't think anyone has ever asked for that specifically, though.

Funnily enough, I've been talking to tayste_2000 today, as Laurence Blackadder suggested I contact him via Facebook. He also gave me some useful info and offered to let me try his bass next time I'm over visiting my parents in Crewe, so I'll definitely take him up on that.

I remember your fretless being on eBay and actually contacted Chris for some info on it, but I decided against it in the end.
If I saw one now, though, I'd snap it up straight away.

Have you seen the Original Series basses Overwater built recently? They look fantastic.

Cheers,

Kees

3. Yes, exactly. Are these beauties yours? I actually found these photos in a thread a while ago, but thought they belonged to a user called JPJ and mailed him about it a couple of days ago. He hasn't replied yet, though.

As I said in my post, I've wanted an Original Series for years. However, I'm not a big guy (5'10" with smallish hands), and I also had some serious tendon problems last year, so I'm curious as to how these basses are playability-wise. Consequently, I'd be interested to hear how you find the 36" scale in combination with the long body, expecially when playing at the bottom end of the neck. Any info you could give me on the following would also be useful:

Weight/balance

Balance tonally and tension-wise across the strings

What string gauges you find work best

Tone/tonal possibilities
However, by all means mention anything you feel might be relevant or of interest. I'm just keen to hear the experiences of anyone who owns one or more of these instruments.

I may also be interested in a secondhand example if you know of one going somewhere.

4. Hey guys,

I found this thread a while ago whilst Googling for info on Overwater Original Series basses. I'm considering commissioning one, so I've just posted a topic in order to get some info from owners. The topic can be found here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/182873-overwater-original-series-four-andor-five-string-models/

If you have any useful info you could share with me, please take a look.

Regards,

Kees

5. Hi,

I've been playing Overwater basses for a number of years and know the guys well. Ever since my first visit to their workshop more than a decade ago I've wanted to own an Original Series, and I'm now seriously considering commissioning one, or perhaps even a fretted/fretless pair. However, there don't seem to be too many on the secondhand market at the moment -- and five-string examples seem to be mega rare -- so trying one out first is almost an impossibility. As a result, I'm also unsure of what specs to choose, and whether to go for a four or five-string.

I know there are a few owners on here, so if any of you read this, I have a few questions and would be interested in hearing any info you'd be willing to share with me.

Regards,

Kees

6. I've advertised this bass before, but I was initially only interested in a sale. However, I've since changed my mind and would now also consider a trade for the right bass (with a cash adjustment either way if applicable). More info on possible trades is provided below.

The bass is a 2006 custom Overwater Progress III Deluxe six-string, which I had built in 2006. I'm selling it for two reasons, namely injury and the fact that the band I used it in folded in 2009. Since then, it's spent most of its time in the case. For those couple of years of use, though, it served me extremely well. The B-string is very tight, thanks to the 35" scale, and is still sufficiently defined when dropped to A with the Hipshot.

The bass is in excellent condition.

Specs

String spacing: 18mm
Scale length: 35"
Maple neck with rosewood skunk stripes
Fretboard: rosewood
Front of body: cocobolo (bookmatched 'full-over top')
Back of body: mahogany
Machine heads: Gotoh (gold)
Bridge: Overwater
Electronics: Overwater
Pickups: Kent Armstrong
Hipshot Extender Key
Straplocks: Jim Dunlop

I recently contacted Overwater to find out what it would cost to have an equivalent bass built now, and with the various custom options it would be EUR 4336.00 / GBP 3584.00.

I'm looking for GBP 1600.00 or the equivalent in euros. The bass comes with a moulded plastic case.

As regards a trade, I'd be particularly interested in a fretless pre-Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay, provided it's in good and all-original condition. Further options I would consider include a fretted pre-EB Stingray, fretted or fretless pre-EB Sabre, a Cutlass I or II, or perhaps a five-string unlined fretless Wal.

Although I'm based in Amsterdam, the bass will be with may parents in Crewe as of early July, unless someone purchases it in the meantime.

String tree is in the wrong place (should be G&D not A&D) logo I'm not sure about and if that's a chamfered body it's not a pre body either , colour is also not a pre EB colour.

Needs more info explaining all the above before anyone gets involved in my opinion :)
The issue of the string tree position, logo, chamfering, etc. is not that black and white. These features were changed before the takeover by EB (around '83), although the EB logos were not implemented until some time after the takeover (examples without the Ernie Ball name on the headstock exist up to '85). Also, MM/EB tended to simply use what they had lying around, so this bass may simply have been assembled from a comination of new and older parts. The neck stamps (if present) should shed some more light on this, but there are many more possible explanations. The info on musicmanbass.org covers this in a lot more detail.

Cheers,

Kees

11. Looks great! Still not gone?
I'll be coming over to England (Crewe) in September; if for some strange reason it's not gone by then, I may well be interested.
I have a 35" six-string Progress myself, but I'm considering switching back to a five. However, I'm not used to the 36" scale, so I'd have to try it.
