If bands are willing to pay-to-play then why not go the whole hog and hire the venue as well?

If a band can't bring in enough punters, then why would a promoter want to risk their own money? Once, perhaps, but never a second time.

I'm not arguing for pay-to-play, just trying to recognise the difficulties and risks on both sides.

Fair point, but there's a lot of bloody brilliant bands out there that could really help put a venue/night on the map. I just think this is a better, more long term way of going about things. Having said that, I'm obviously not a promoter - so I've not wasted lots of money looking at an empty bar with a brilliant band playing!

  2. The prog band I used to play in were part of this 'Manchester bands against pay to play' thing, I would suggest setting up a similar thing in your relevant town. I also used to play a lot around the Preston area, where this pay to play bollocks just didn't happen. Like a few people have already said, it only exists because of crappy bands with loads of mates being preferable to booking someone decent, trying to build a name for the night/venue. Mad Ferret in Preston is amazing purely for this reason, promoters there actually work hard at finding bands of a certain calibre to play. Don't get me wrong, the odd sh*tty band who's mates with the promoter still makes it through every now and again, but on the whole it's well run.

Make a stand! Totally agree with MusicMan20 - I'd rather have a band practice too!

  3. I was wondering if anyone knew of a compressor pedal that could do the job for both? I do a fair bit of recording and production and as you use the same VST compressor for any instrument, I figured there must be a pedal that also does for both guitar and bass. Does anyone know if this exists? And more importantly does anyone have experience of such a pedal, and is it any good? Thank you kindly for your assistance!

  4. Ok, so the time has come...she's up for sale:

Just not playing it, and after a clean up and re-string today I've decided someone should really be actually playing this, rather than it sitting in its case!

  5. SOLD PLEASE REMOVE

After MUCH deliberation, I have come to a very difficult decision....I'm going to sell my first ever bass. She's a '95 Mexican precision in wine red. I know I'm massively biased but I think this is a cracking bass which I believe to be superior to newer ones (that I've played at least). I'm based in South Manchester, so if anyone is interested let me know happy for people to have a go to check it out. The bass is in very good condition, with the 2 dings in the finish featured in the pics. Cleaned it up, polished the frets treated the fretboard and put a new set of strings on it today.

Why am I selling I hear you cry? Well I just don't play it any more. I have a Jazz that just suits what I'm playing and I find it so versatile that the Precision needs to go to a new home. Nothing sadder than a nice bass not being played in my opinion!

Comes complete with hardcase, please note broken handle on the case. Probably easily fixed by someone a little more DIY minded than myself!

I'm going to list this at £300, incl. case - PRICE DROP TO £280

  6. Mine's a pretty short list but here goes!

    1. Calsbro Colt 45w keyboard amp
    2. Trace Elliot Boxer 65w - still got it!
    3. Laney RB4
    4. Warwick Pro Fet ? through a Warwick WCA 411
    5. Changed the Pro Fet for an Ampeg B5R
    6. Markbass CMD 121P

Somewhere in between I stupidly purchased a Laney Fartcore practice amp...man that sounded horrendous!

Must say I'm enjoying not having to lug a washing machine in and out of venues!

  7. Thanks for all this guys, the EB is obviously great, but I'm not sure I want something quite that heavy! I know it seems a bit daft, but I've been trying to downsize my gig gear (must be getting old!!!) Will keep my eyes peeled for the boss, especially if I can get one for £50!

how about the alesis F2 ?
Have you used one of these? Looks like it ticks all the boxes, but can't seem to find a price for one. No indication on Alesis' website to say if it's out of production or not.

    Cheers

  8. Howdy

Does anyone know of a decent volume pedal that can also be used as an expression pedal? I'm after a volume pedal mainly to give a bit of a boost for solos, but I would also like to use it as an expression pedal with a boss space echo. Seems like a bit of a minefield, so thought I'd consult the experts! A lot of people like the ernie ball pedals, but they're really heavy and a bit pricey for me. Looking to spend £50 max.

    Cheers
