1.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I might plan a visit to PMT (great name, whoever thought that would be a good idea? :)) and Reverb over the next couple of weeks. However, sounds like it'll have to be Denmark Street to satisfy the mooching requirements, especially as it's only £18 on the train on a Saturday.

    Oh, and doctor_of_the_bass - 63 basses? 63 BASSES? That's not an interest, that's a disease
Correct!

  2.
Hi all

I feel the need to spend a day mooching round guitar shops, but haven't a clue what's on offer any more. In the old days, Musical Exchanges in Birmingham used to be a fantastic place to spend a day, full of loads of second hand kit, as well as brand new stuff. The Bass Centre was also just around the corner. However, I know they've both closed down (and changed hands several times), so I don't have a clue where to look these days.

I've looked on t'internet, and can't find much in the way of help, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Incidentally, I live about 45 mins from Birmingham, so it's probably not too much more of an effort to head to London on the train, and maybe look there, so any recommendations of good shops to check out in London would also be appreciated. I've never done the Denmark Street thing, so maybe that's an option?

I'm not looking for anything in particular (although maybe a Jetglo Rickky if I see one!), but I'd like to find somewhere with a decent selection of 2nd hand stuff.

    Thanks for any suggestions....

    Mark.
Hi Mark!

As you may realise from my avatar/sig - I am one of the top moochers out here!!!!!

PMT in Birmingham have a nice bass dept and have a couple of great guys there, Dave Sherriff and Dave Clarke - its worth a visit just to see the shop as its one of the biggest in the UK.

To be honest, the golden days of seeing fantastic stocks of good secondhand gear in shops are long gone, the internet has taken over that side of the market. Perhaps one day there will be a revival but for now, the Basschat For Sale section may be the only place to go! There are other shops to check out though, most notably The Bass Merchant in Colchester, Bass Direct in Warwick (right on your doorstep!!) and not forgetting the Gallery in Camden!

  3.
This must be the first KB2 to be sold on for the original owner I would say.....
I think Alex from the gallery sold one a while ago on Ebay which was one of the first batch (I think it was one of the quilted maple models that Mark used on tour). This might be the second such sale.

  4.
The plastic pickup rings for a 1959 Les Paul change hands for up to £10,000.

If you have a '59 and want it to be all original - then spending that will get your axe over £100,000 (sometimes they hit £250,000)

    Madness.
How in the name of the Cosmos can you prove the authenticity of that kind of stuff (p/up rings!)???

    Absolutely crazy.

Nick (Pickup Rings R Us - new venture!)

  5. Awww!

Why are there so many great basses up for sale right now?!!! All my money's gone...

I've been playing my 4001CS quite a bit recently, plus one of my students has got what is perhaps the best example of a 4003 I've ever seen/played - its in that lovely deep trans blue finish and the tone is exemplary!

So, have a Bump on me!

    BUMP (there it is!)

    Nick

  6.
Hi just thought i would let everybody see my bass and would love to know what its worth.
I bought it from a pro player about 6 years,he claims he used it on comercial recordings in the 80's.
Great to play with its low action.
    Thanks.
    John.
..meant to say that the red one has come home to daddy!!!

  7.
Unlike a fair few of the forum members, I love the sound from my mark bass cabs. I use two 2 x 10" cabs and a genz benz head.
Nice one! I've said it many times before, I personally love the cabs (then again, I'm a bit biased, owning four of them plus a head and combo!). I've A B'ed stacks from different manufacturers and the mark stuff just seems right for me.

  8.
MB1. :)
Have Seen Maya basses before!...never an El Maya...unless this is a Maya for the Mexican Market!....Sorry!...I'll Get me coat!

............Think the Doc might know a bit more on this?
Are you referring to me or Howard? I know very little about Mayan products; did own a Maya P bass once! Very well made. Jon's the man really. Polytone produced a range of basses at one point which shared the same body shape...iirc!

  9. Allo!

I'm reluctantly letting this wonderful bass guitar go - thanks to Adam (thedontcarebear) for specs and pics (he ordered it and I'm the second owner) - its really as new condition-wise - I've not gigged it etc. Looking for £600 - really is a lovely bass but new bass(es) forces sale. Am willing to deliver for fuel costage. Here's the spec:

Alder Body with Flame Maple top. Special finish burst top with transparent brown back

Goncalo Alves neck with Ebony fretboard
    10” radius
    6150 frets
    White corian nut

    Gotoh 201 Bridge (black)
    Schaller BML Tuners (black)
    Schaller Straplocks (black)

Seymour Duncan STC-2 Preamp (18 volt)
    Bartolini 9J1 L/S pickups

  10. Nowt wrong with using a pick!

Colin Hodgkinson - uses one quite a lot! And my mate Alan Jones (ex Shadows and one of the most recorded bassists of all time) uses one extensively. Graham Gouldman of 10CC - another very notable pick man!

Some standout pick basslines (in no particular order):

    1. South Side of The Sky - Chris Squire (Yes of course!)
    2. Glittering Prize - Derek Forbes
    3. Method of Modern Love - T Bone (Hall & Oates)
    4. Cinema - Chris Squire
    5. Art for Art's Sake - Graham Gouldman (10CC)

  11. Blurgh!

    Speechless!

  12. Lavverly!!!

I just became a dad this week to a new StingRay fretless, am hoping to get some pix sorted once it stops raining!
Bassist mag reviewed a fretted version (with piezo bridge) some years ago in the same finish - one of my mates bought it - its a beautiful colour - always wanted a JD in that shade!
