  1. Ok so ive used my trusty BassPod XT Pro pretty much exclusively, both live and at home, for the last 6 years or so. Its been my all in one magic box of tricks that has served me well, but now im GASsing for something different.

Effects wise, im really hankering after building a little pedalboard with some cool new toys on it. I generally only use a few effects over and above an awesome clean tone from my Warwicks, so I wanted to get some opinions from the fine folk of BC.

So I want a good Overdrive pedal, a funky Envelope Filter, a Phaser and perhaps add an Octaver.

In my mind, there is and has never been a better overdriven sound than that of a load of valves being run HARD - years and years ago I had a box made by DHA, a sort of prototype that I cant find any more - here it is on my OLD pedalboard:

I loved that first VT2 - anyt houghts on the new ones? Same sort of sounds? Loved the fact that I could have one slightly warm/crunchy overdrive then kick in a massive in your face overdrive if I wanted.

The best envelope filter ive dug up lately seems to be the Sounblox Bass EV - not the big pro model, the smaller one - I also like that it has a pahser on it, two birds with one...err...pedal.

And Octaver - no idea. EBS? Genuinely have no idea whats out there, the Octaver on the Bass Pod has always been superb so open to suggestion.

Planning on sticking it all on a little Pedaltrain thingy with some sort of power supply.

Advice on all of the above would be awesome, Ive not played with anything but a bass pod for so long I feel lost!!!

  2. Im going to go against the grain a bit here and say that ive never actually liked Ashdown amps - too heavy, never sounded that good to me and overrated. I recall a few of thier earlier models being fraught with reliability issues too, however I dont have experience with the newer models tbh.

  3. A great example of why you should never judge a book by its cover - when you find "the one", the instrument when everything you hve in your tolkit just clicks, when you feel an affinity towards the bass - you have to buy it.

I found my perfect bass 6 years ago, in my Warwick SS2 5er and no bass (even high end ones) ive played ever since seems just...well....not right.

  4. Ive done a few wedding gigs where limiters are in place, and trust me, its not something I would wish on anyone. They are so variable and can either be set at a reasonable level or can be really unforgiving.

One occasion that springs to mind - we where booked to play at a wedding, in an old converted barn in the middle of nowhere. Quite beuatiful and an ideal setting for such an event. We set up, our sound man rigs up our PA (5k rig for medium sized venue), and we start to soundcheck - and BOOM, the power goes out!

That particular limiter was so unforgiving that we had to ask the audience not to clap or cheer after songs, as it killed the power and we where scared of blowing up a very expensive stage full of kit!

Oh, and we where told (in the contract) that this particular limiter was set at 98dB, im damn sure it was lower than that but try to avoid it if possible. And get yourself a load of surge protectors!

  5. Hey folks,

So ive recently become the proud owner of a new Acoustic Bass, a sexy Warwick Alien STD 5, and I love it - but i despise the feel of the strings on it!

I can only describe them as rough to the touch, making me very slow and im finding it much harder to pull off my usual tricks with them. I use Elixir Nanowebs on all my electrics (love the coated strings, makes them nice and slick), but it doesnt look like there is such a thing for acoustic bass.

Could I get away with a set of nanoweb roundwounds? Or Would flats be a better option?

Just looking for some advice and experience from all you acoustic users out there!

  6. Bought an excellent Warwick Alien STD 5 acoustic bass from Spacecowboy this week, superb and in the same condition as described. Great guy to deal with, very open communications and a pleasure to do business with.

Bass arrived in a nice padded and secure package, even the clumsy drooling courier couldnt harm it :)

  7. Ok so I took delivery of the Alien Acoustic today - many thanks to spacecowboy, superb bass and very happy!

    Here's my lot:

Thinking about getting some LED fret markers installed on the LX5 - just for kicks :)

I remember hearing this cab and the Tech combo that Simon had with it, at the first SE Bass Bash in Guildford in 2007.. It sounded really good...

Even more amazing though, was when lots of us there lifted it up to discover just how light it actually is!

I remember this! Didnt Dan have one aswell?

That bass bash was the first time I discovered lightweight cabs, was looking for a tech cab for a while after that. Ended up with an Epifani UL310 in the end!

  9. Stunning SS1 right there - I had one before the SS2, great bass and superb instrument!

Im hoping to update my warwick collection this week.... all will be revealed in due course.....

  10. Always loved the sound of a good 3 band Ray, but could never get along with the neck profile. Had a couple of them before my Warwick SS2, 2 band always seemed to lack the tones I was loking for, 3 band was excellent but really didnt sit well with me.

Im now, well and truely a Warwick only player, love the growl and bite my SS2 gives and the LX5 is a slightly less refined but equally brilliant battleaxe.

  11. Hi folks,

So im looking at spending some bonus money on a new combo amp - must be portable (fits in a 5 series that doesnt have folding rear seats!), loud enough for small/medium gigs, and light. I am torn between the GK MB212-II and the 2x10 version, but alas, this is the Bass guitars section.

In addition to the new amp, im after a decent acoustic bass, and ive spied the Warwick RB Alien 5 standard as within budget. Any views on these? Im thinking of using it at home (unplugged) and at a few open mic nights and such. Youtube reveals some nice videos and tones, and im a warwick fan so the neck profile is to my liking.

    Any views folks?

  12. New cover of "circles" by Incubus - featuring my god buddy Rob Thom on the drums.

And a bit of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, mostly because I have to play this on sunday for Tara Deane's album launch, first gig in a while :)
