1. Yeah , I have heard that they are very good so I was considering buying one instead of a 51 Precision reissue (which I cant really afford) as I think the difference probably doesn't justify me spending the extra money as the Squiers have had such a good response. So you would say that the pickups have a good old school type of sound?
2. Ive always been a sucker for old school retro looking basses and recently have noticed the Squier Classic Vibe 50's P Bass with the single coil pickup and have decided that I have to have one. What I am thinking of doing is buying one and then dropping in an aftermarket vintage voiced pickup (probably the Seymour Duncan one) , however i've never actually heard (or not that i can remember) a Single coil P bass , what can I expect tonally? , im familiar with Split coil P bass sound but not the Single coil P bass sound
3. Have been considering getting a headless bass since a recent back injury occurred , the one thing stopping me from doing this is that ive never seen a set of flatwounds for a headless bass, anybody know if anyone makes flats for headless basses?
4.
Morning! Has anybody tried Black Diamond strings? What did you think? Good value or not? Did they sound good / last well? My local dealer has these in stock but cannot find any reviews of these here. He seems to have a lot of these in stock and are priced at £29.99 so not cheap then! I reckon he has had a special purchase of these and not sold any since he has asked me to report back if I try them and let him know what I think? Hmmmm. Jazz Chrome flatwounds! http://www.blackdiamondstrings.com/HTMLPages/bass.html
I just took a set of these off of my bass they lasted all of 2 weeks before I decided enough was enough, I bought them at a local music shop as they were the only flats in stock. IMO these strings are horrible , the A string was kinked when I took it out of the packet and the strings were so rough they felt like roundwounds , they looked kind of like them too. Soundwise they had no thump and sounded like dead roundwounds rather than flats. The tension also seemed high for the gauge.
5. Help, I have recently aquire a MIM Urge Bass. I noticed the screws on the machineheads seemed to be pulling away from the headstock a little , after taking off one of the machineheads it seems that the previous owner has replaced the original machineheads and has drilled the holes for the replacements too big. Im a bit stuck at the moment as to what to do , is there any kind of fix for this or will I have to buy some genuine fender machineheads , any suggestions. Have attached pics , sorry for the abysmal picture quality
6.
my advice to you and other new players (and myself) is turn off basschat and your computer with all the talk of better bass. And turn on your bass amp and record player. It's better that way.
Never a wiser word spoken on this forum , once you start thinking about other basses you will find you're never content with what you have , plus you will find you spend more time on the forums than actually playing
7. I am thinking of removing the pickguard on my Urge MX Bass , however there is a little bit of gap in the bottom of the neck join (see picture) , will it be ok to remove the pickguard , I dont want anything bad happening to my neck due to moisture getting in the gap , however it is not unusual to have a gap in the bass or treble side of a neck pocket so I do not think this will be a problem , what do you think?
8.
Hi For what its worth I have just acquired the same model MIM Urge bass and I swopped the original noisy PUPS for my fav. DiMarzio Model Js. ( Passive ) Really pleased with the sound ( and the lack of Hum and Microphony ). Regards Will.
Cool , I may well have to look into the model J's , has the bass response improved since the swap? as the sound on my bass at the moment is a little on the bright side and I am looking for something a bit deeper and with killer punch
9. Hi , I have a Fender Urge MX Bass that has stacked vol/blend , bass/treble knobs (picture below) , I wanted to change the knobs on the bass as they are a bit worn and slightly rusted looking. Is this an easy job to do ? Anyone done this ?
10. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, I have recently aquired a MIM Fender Urge MX Bass , it has a 2 band eq (bass/treble) which is powered by a 9 volt battery , does this mean that I can use active pickups ? Will the single 9 volt battery provide enough juice for the pickups ? I am currently looking into replacement pickups for this bass and don't want to limit myself to passive pickups if I dont have to.
11. Hi, I need to find a Bartolini dealer in the UK , does anybody know of anywhere I can buy Barts from in the UK (i would rather not have to deal with import duty , shipping costs etc) , Any suggestions appreciated
12. Update , have got rid of the Squier Bronco and have brought a used MIM Fender Urge Bass , very pleased , is very comfortable to play thanks to the medium scale and small body and sounds a lot better than the Squier
13.
Have not done pickup swap yet , have just got some new machineheads coz the squier ones suck , will fit pup in next week or two , am currently trying to decide between the Seymour Duncan SCPB-1 and the Seymour Duncan Lipstick Pick up , both seem to be in the vintage ballpark , will let you know once I have done the swap
Update - Saw a Fender Urge Bass in a shop at a very good price and fell in love with it on the spot , did a part exchange using my Bronco and my Epi EB0 , will be paying off the remaining balance at the end of the month
14. Hi there, Thinking of this bass (Tanglewood Canyon) as an upgrade on my current bass http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=6103 for £300 rrp it looks like an absolute bargain , anybody played one of these ? If so are they any good ?
15.
bump. Any luck mate?
Have not done pickup swap yet , have just got some new machineheads coz the squier ones suck , will fit pup in next week or two , am currently trying to decide between the Seymour Duncan SCPB-1 and the Seymour Duncan Lipstick Pick up , both seem to be in the vintage ballpark , will let you know once I have done the swap
16.
I stuck a Seymour duncan SCPB-1 in mine made a world of difference. Ignor the haters! Oh and any rail type pick up will work on a bass, its the same principal electronic wise.
Thanks Warpig, Its nice to have someone actually answer my question instead of slagging off the bronco , did you have to do any mods to get the SCPB-1 to fit ? .
17. I have just aquired a Squier Bronco which I will be replacing the pickup on, I am looking at the Seymour Duncan range at the moment and am wondering what pickup to use as a replacement , I have been thinking about the Hot rails or the Cool rails pickups , anybody know what the differences are between these two pickups in terms of how they sound?. With regards to pickups I am after something with lots of low end , not too much treble , kind of vintage sounding , I have thought about the vintage single coil p bass seymour duncan pickup but am ideally looking for something that will be a direct replacement (as in a pickup that just drops in with no mods) , any suggestions ?
18. Hi, I have an Epiphone EB0 which I bought secondhand, however the original owner decided to take off the pickguard which means there are some unsightly holes where the pickguard used to be , does anybody know where I can buy a pickguard for this bass? ,thanks
19. What the hell. Seems even Jaco is no longer safe from the evils of modern hip hop music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O8XyxvhAEw
20.
Aha, nasty shabby cheapos the same as used on cheap Yamahas...... So anything will be an improvement, but you need to make sure you order 3/8" shaft tuners (unless you want a big job enlarging hole in teh headstock....). Whatever you do get you will have to plug teh holes left by removing these and drilll new holes for teh replacemnets. Maybe some of these---- Wilkinson Bass Tuners WJB650CR Chrome – £26.99 WJB650BK Black – £29.99 WJB650GD Gold – £32.99 Ultra smooth action with full size base plates. Vintage style tuning keys. 2+2. or anything on this page...... 21. thanks for the replies guys , as suggested i have attached a pic of the back of the headstock
22. Hi all, I have a Squier Bronco that I will be doing some upgrades on , the machineheads on this thing have to go though as they are complete crap and rattle and buzz whenever I play an open string. The problem is the machineheads on this bass are not the standard elephant ear tuners but are the much smaller type as in the picture below. I have yet to find any replacement machineheads that have the same dimensions , anyone know of any direct replacement tuners , any suggestions ?
23. Anybody know where to but Optima Gold Flatwounds in the UK ? Have heard of these but cannot find them anywhere , stringsdirect seems to only stock the roundwound version
24. Hi, Was wondering if anybody could help me with this. I have aquired a new bass that is currently strung with roundwounds. The only spare flatwounds I have are different brands , I have a gauge 100 chromes and gauges 70 , 60 , 40 Ernie ball flats (?) , as these are the only spares I have at the moment and I dont get paid for another 3 weeks I was thinking of stringing the bass with these as I hate roundwounds. The thing is chromes are a heavier tension string than ernie ball flats and I was wondering if the gauge 100 chromes string would cause any neck problems being as its being paired with lighter tension flats (70,60,40) , obviously I know that the E string is going to feel a lot stiffer than the other strings , anyone?
25.
I'm not too sure. I've got a fretless pbass and I've had an SPB3 in it for a long time now. I always find that I have to turn the volume down ALOT and the bass of it is generally far too boomy. I also find that the lack of mids gives a great double bass sound, but I wish I had something with more mids and less volume. Been toying with the idea of swapping it for an SPB1 for about a year, but I haven't had the time or money to do so.
That explains why my SPB-3 sounds good with Tapewounds , With tone rolled off and Tapes it does sound quite close to DB territory
