1. Hey,

It's my brother's 21st Birthday on the 8th of August and we are looking for a covers band.

I am looking for a band that plays mainly rock covers, has an edge, whether it be an image or style. Most of the audience will be around 18 - 25 years old.

The band we wanted (http://www.mullit.co.uk/) were busy and couldn't do it. They played stuff from Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, Kaiser Chiefs, Video Killed the Radio Star (can't remember the artist!) and some older classics. They were all lively, young and a bit eccentric, and have spent the last 7 years gigging every night in a ski resort so they are good!

We are basically looking for something similar. Something really special that will get peoples attention and have a great stage presence, and have enough chops to impress the metal heads around!

I'm open to all options though. I saw a band in LA called the Spazmatics (http://www.myspace.com/thespazmatics) who were the funniest guys on stage. So anyone with a difference is good!

Me and my brother play for a band called Elliot Minor (www.myspace.com/elliotminor) so we can help with backline, PA and staging if necessary.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  2.
I haven't played a Sterling so I can't comment on that, but I did a/b it against my 3EQ Stingray. The Sandberg's MM pickup will do a pretty reasonable approximation of the Stingray, but it didn't have quite as much bite and balls. It was Stingray-lite, if you will, but still a good tone. This might be to do with the JM having a 2-band EQ, and my tendency to whack the mid up on my Stingray as much as anything else.

To be honest though, after using nothing but Stingray for about 4 years, I'm loving the neck pickup on the JM4. There just seems to be so much more depth to the bottom end when you blend it in. The bridge pick up hardly gets a look in these days!
Sounds promising! I guess a Sterling is a less ballsy version of the Stingray so they could be pretty similar. Might try and see if I can get one to try out at a gig.

  3.
Haha, wise move, you know it makes sense!!
Do these sound anything like a Musicman Sterling? I have a sterling at the moment that sounds great, however I love the shape and feel of the Jazz style basses and I was thinking of getting one of these.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  4.
Please excuse me, but I would think that is a very bad idea. The sound of an electric bass has lots of frequencies that overlap with the sound of almost every other instrument, fooling your perception, specially in the 200-700hz range. In my experience, its very easy to tweak a bass tone until it sounds great when you are playing alone, but as soon as the other instruments start rocking, your bass sound might lose a lot of definition.

So, a great bass tone during a live band setup might sound harsh, middy, nasal and crappy when playing alone, and a great bass sound while playing alone might get lost in the mix during a live band setup.
I agree. I play in a 5 piece (drums, two guitarists with mesa stacks, keyboard player with synth, and three of them sing) and my tone sounds really harsh on it's own, but sits beautifully in the mix.

When i practice on my own I use a Fender Jazz. With the band I need a Musicman Sterling and a cranked Sansamp.

  5.
Can you isolate the bass? Really? How do you do it?
Sorry, that statement is rather misleading. I'll edit it. Unintentional, I just used their words. The reality is, you can try to isolate the frequencies in which an instrument sits. For example, the 'bass select' looks like this:

It can be tweaked, depending on the sound of the bass, and you can save your eq settings. Not exactly isolating the bass, as you still hear parts of the other instruments, however it does help if a particular line is difficult to hear.

  6. Not sure where i should put this, but I just want to say the Vox Amplug is an incredible piece of gear.

I use this together with Transcription ( http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/overview.html ) which is essentially a software version of a Tascam Bass Trainer.
It allows you to highlight certain areas of the track to repeat, slow down, change pitch, *isolate the bass (or any other instrument for that matter)*. And all your markers, loops etc can be saved so you can open up the track and work certain parts immediately.
I believe there is a trial version as well so you can check it out.

Using a stereo mini jack I just connect my laptop to the Vox and use a good quality pair of headphones. It's all battery powered (including laptop, obviously!) so you can paractice anywhere and it's completely silent. Plus if you are like me, and have all of your music on your computer, it's a lot easier than loading up individual tracks onto an external unit such as the Tascam.

Here is a picture of the Vox:

    And a screenshot of Transcribe:

This has made transcribing so much easier.
Transcribe works out at about £32, and the Vox Amplug is £40. Which totals £72. That is still cheaper than a tascam bass trainer.

    Ed

I have never used a Tascam so feel free to voice your opinions!

Edit * It doesn't actually isolate instruments, it just attempts to by isolating frequencies, obviously you will still hear parts of other instruments that occupy the same space. It is helpful though.

  7. Hi Everyone,

I've decided to sell both my Aguilar GS410's as I have bought an Ampeg 8x10.

They are in good condition, and are still in their original boxes (albeit they have been made into cases, with holes cut to allow access to the cabinet handles).

I've owned these for about two years and have ALWAYS played with in-ear monitors and full PA support, so I have never needed to push them.

They have been gigged many times, and this is reflected in the price (bargain!!!), however they are extremely well built, and I have never had a problem with them.

This is an extemely good buy for anyone looking for quality gear at a low price.

The cabs are rated at 700w and they are 8ohms. Here is a full spec listing http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_cabinets_gs410.htm

They retail at £750 each new from the bass gallery ( http://www.thebassgallery.com/aguilaramps.html ), however I am selling BOTH for £500 (that works out at £250 each!). I am prepared to sell them separately for £300 each. I am based in York, and anyone is welcome to try them out.

As you can see from the photo's they are still in good condition, apart from wear on the corners:

P.s For those who are interested, the tweeter diaphragms have been changed. I noticed a rattling and thought it might have been a tweeter problem which lead me to change them. However it later turned out to be a dodgy tube in my head rather than a problem with the cabinet. There was nothing wrong with the cabinets.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  8.
wicked mate that looks sick!

any reason why you changed the tweeters?

    andy
After a fair few gigs, the coils in the tweeters burnt out, so I replaced the diaphragm's. The rest of the tweeter is original.
    They work perfectly now.

im guessing they both 8 ohms?

    andy
Yes.

Here are a couple (these are the only ones on my computer at the moment. I'm not at home until a week today, so I won't be able to take more details pictures until then)

They work perfectly, and I transport them around in their original boxes with holes cut to allow access to the handles. (I have also replaced both tweeters, as I have owned them for quite while, probably about two years.). I no longer use them as I have bought an Ampeg 8x10.

I'd be quite happy to let you have them both for £500 (that's £250 each!). I'm based in York.
    I can send/post pictures if you're interested.

    Ed

  11. Yeah I love it, I've added a hipshot and now I use it for pretty much everything. So easy to play.
But I did use the Jazz for a couple of the slower numbers, however we aren't gigging for a couple of months while we sort out the next album, so I'm freeing up cash for christmas. Having 5 younger brothers isn't cheap!

  12. Hi Everyone,

I bought this beautiful instrument from Guitar Center in June while over in the USA on a 'business' trip. Although I love the sound of it, it just doesn't cut it with the band and I keep going back to my MusicMan Sterling. So unfortunately this has to go.

It's been hardly used, other than in my bedroom and a handful of gigs when I tried it out. Other than a few scratches where my belt rubbed on the back (you can see how little they are from the photo) there are no major dings or dents. Bear in mind the bass has caught a few reflections so don't be put off, if you are unsure I am quite happy to take more photo's!

It comes with a Fender Hardcase (incl. two copies of the key for the case, the allen keys and the cloth that came with it)

    £550

    Thanks,

I live 15miles South East of York, collection preferred. However I am prepared to deliver if you are within an hour or so.
I am not prepared to post it, as I am not desperate to sell. I'd rather sell to someone face to face and avoid all the hassle of posting.

  13. Hi everyone,

Thanks for the interest. The head is now sold. I believe Birdy still has one for sale, check it out if you're still after one of these, it is one hell of an amp!

As for the cabinets, I have pulled them off the market. I am getting them checked out by a friend of mine (amp/cab technician) and replacing the diaphragm's in the tweeter's before I resell.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  14.
No problem. If you're just using it as notepad, do you really need eight tracks? If you go for a four-track digital recorder, you can get one quite cheaply that will be much smaller and you can carry with you everywhere in your gig bag and will run on batteries. The newer ones use flash memory formats such as SD cards, so if you got a cheapo card-reader for your computer, transfer couldn't be easier. If you have, for example, a stereo mix of a song you're working on using two tracks, then you still have two more tracks to record bass parts on. Just a thought, but if it's strictly for 'note-taking', I think this could be a good alternative that won't take up a load of room and have features you don't need, if, as you say, you have access to a decent pro-tools rig.

Hope this hasn't confused the matter further!
Thanks, that seems like the most sensible option. The reason why I initially thought of getting an 8 track rather than 4 was due to the memory. I assumed 4 tracks wouldn't have sufficient memory, however the SD cards seem like a good idea!

    I'll look into it.

  15.
good call; for the money, Korg make great little portable units which would be great for simple tracking (and more!). Have a scout around Ebay but make sure they're in good condition and the hard drives are working ok. All-in-one Multitrackers don't usually have a very high residual value so you can sometimes pick up a real bargain on a used one. As for transfer to computer, modern ones have USB facilities, but it isn't a standard feature on most, and in my experience, can be fiddly to use. Quite a lot of them have CD burners in though, or can be retrofitted with one very very cheaply, so you could burn off the mixes and then rip them to .aiff to work on the computer with them, or look for one with a digital out, run it into a digital in on your soundcard and you have real-time transfer with no loss of quality. I don't like the look of those ipod things either, for the record.

Hope this helps, good luck finding a bargain :)
Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Keep it coming

I think I am going to give the ipod one a miss until I find some proper info on it from people who have tried and tested it.

I don't need anything fancy as our guitarist has a large Pro-tools setup at his studio, so if I want anything recording properly I just go there. This is more for developing bass lines, ideas etc like a note pad but for music!

  16. Hi,

I am looking to buy an 8 track recorder, however I was overwhelmed by the information found using google. I did a quick search on here but it didn't produce anything.

Basically I am looking for a portable 8 track recorder with a decent sized hard drive and the option to transfer the finished items to a computer.

I saw this recently http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/04/alesis_imultimi.html however I couldn't find many reviews.
And I'm worried the ipod feature maybe a gimmick and detract from overall quality.

I'd like to spend around £150 to £200. It is basically for laying down chord progressions on an electro acoustic and then writing bass lines over the top.

    Thanks

  17.
Razzle.
Ha I'm left handed actually, I play bass right handed though.

The wierd one is cricket... I throw with my left hand but bowl with my right. I can't do it the other way round...

    Ed

  18. hi,

I know there is plenty of information on right hand techniques, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any good right hand 'workout' books.

I already have bass fitness by josquin de pees which has really improved my left hand.

    Thanks

    Ed
