Take a look at this one then - a 1961 stack-knob which was sold several years ago by an American dealer:

[*]Utterly Godawful condition - check
[*]Absolutely NOT all original - check
[*]Owned by famous musician but not particularly associated with him - check
[*]Completely irrelevant mention of famous band - check
[*]Ludicrously inflated price - double check with bells on
What's not to like?

Well, they never claim it being all original. 'Mention of famous band' - where?

3. Yours for £16K.

Changed pots, repair on the body. Decal looks like a replacement.

Bet it sounds amazing though!

I tried the one Strings & Things brought to the London Show recently. Due to the noise levels in the hall you couldn't really judge the sound, but the neck - profile and low frets - did feel great. Finish looked beautiful. Another winner from EBMM!

5. Can you post a pic showing the bass side of the binding (with the dots), please?

Also, in your Photobucket set there's a pic of the back of the headstock with a different set of tuners on but it's difficult to tell whether it's actually from the same bass?

6. Didn't see this one when it was live... The date in the description is around ten years off. Photos aren't great but still the most incredible bargain I've seen in a long time, if real!

7. Did a bit of random bass weighing recently...

1964 Fender Precision 8.8 lbs (without covers/thumbrest)
1983 62 RI Fender Jazz 8.8 lbs (without covers/thumbrest)

1987 EBMM SR4 8.5 lbs
1989 EBMM SR5 9.8 lbs
1998 EBMM SR4 9.3 lbs
2007 EBMM SR4 8.2 lbs

Taking the neck off will be the true test. Should have small date stamp on the body socket, and big stamp on the neck end, e.g. 7NOV62A. Also good to check that the solder under the pickups and control panel is original.
It's a slab board, so the neck date will be earlier than November '62. Along with the serial number, my guess would be mid-year at the latest, but it's not an exact science, of course. Handwritten if it's pre-March, after that stamped.

Not all bodies were dated. If they were, you'd find a (handwritten) date in one of the pickup cavities. However, refin or not, this finish looks like Olympic White - hence opaque, meaning you're unlikely to see a date through the finish either way.

But you're right, more pics, with higher resolution, would help. Neck date, neck pocket, neck heel. Also pots, control cavity and bridge. Plus pickups and body under the guard but removing the old guards can be tricky due to shrinkage.

Are the mutes still present?

Actually, there were quite a few...

Nobody Does It Better, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, Licence To Kill, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough. Some even rate A View To A Kill.
