1.
I thought I'd posted on this somewhere else a while back but I can't find it right now.

Electric guitars have a 'commodity code' that allows HMRC/UKBA to calculate the duty and thus the VAT. The commodity code is 9267901000 and this gives a duty rate of 3.2%. This is added to the value of the goods plus it's shipping and insurance charges (if any) and that total then gets VAT added to it.

UKBA should, if the item arrives at Coventry International Hub, look at the item description, allocate it's correct code and calculate accordingly. Thing is, these guys are not doing it, even when the correct commodity code is on the shipping docket. It's starting to annoy the hell out of me: I'm not here to their job for them and if they want their pound of flesh then I expect them to do it properly! I've already received two adjustment refunnds this year from them and my MP is involved with the issues as well.

It's not fair, and they think that cos their part of HMRC they can do as they see fit. Well, not with this fella!

    Hope that helps.
Ah..
Can you tell us what they are doing wrong? Is it the wrong commodity code? Does it makea big difference and who do you call to fix it?
How do you know if they have done it wrong?
    Thanks
    OG

  2.
CIJ jazzes rule! I have a JB66US, I think that's the model number anyway, it's a monster! Also Si is a lovely chap to deal with. Buying this would almost garauntee you a look around his wood and tronics too. Best deal ever? I think so
Cheers Cocco.
Yup a go on the Shuker P5 and Wood & Tronics Ergon is included if you come and get the bass frrm me :) I'll even make coffee

  3.
There has been a recent saga of a Bass crawl to Wales from Kent....not sure how that went, in the end, but a few put their hand up.
Link please!

Could work. I'd rather trust a fellow BC bass player than a courier, that's for sure.

  4. Went to see Pee Wee Ellis and the Funk Academy at the Cardiff Big Weekend last night.
A bit too "instrumental" for a general audience but the addition of Claire Teal to sing a couple of songs to end teh set made it better. They did a great funk soaked slow grinding speed version of I feel Good. It was great but I really wished they'd come back and encored it at racing speed :)
Laurence Cottle on bass was understated but spot on... Could have done with The Chicken and a few more well known tunes though.

The Big Weekend is a great weekend of free gigs, local upstarts on Friday, International names on Saturday (headlines Chaka Demus and his Pliers) and young persons bands on Sunday (Feeder, Athlete)

  5.
Just a quick update to remind Basschatters to check the duty that the UK Border Agency are charging on imported electric guitars. I have just caught them out again - for the 3rd time since I started checking - with incorrect calculations. I sudder to think how much money I've lost to them over the past ten years of importing kit.

    Be vigilant, guys.
Hummmmmm
    Can you elucidate a little?
    Thanks

  6. Simple: don't play venues with them fitted. That's our rule.

If a venue has a noise limiter they probably have a damn good reason (and this is not about noise at work for employees). That means that Environmental Health noise guys have been involoved and the venue licence will be under threat.
If you plug in somewhere else with the venue managers OK then he will be risking his licence.

  7.
Jakers!! .....HA,Ha,Ha,HA!! I'd forgotten that one.
    I also think, the phrase
    "Help 'ma Boab".....
from "oor Wille" I used to read in the sunday post as a kid should make a come back.
Im not scottish, I just like them guys!

should this be a new thread by the way?
    swearing that "isnt swearing"?

if this is a hijack I've no mask BTW
Jakers is also a rather spiffing TV show, allegedly for kids, about a bunch of farm animals including a small pig and his wise grandfather. I watched it a lot when my lad was of the appropriate age. It's a good one.

"The word "Jakers!" is based on an Irish expression used back in the 1950's and means "wow!" or "amazing!" - Piggley and his father use it to express their delight when they discover something on their adventures."

I use "Crikey" and "Oh Goodness" as often as possible along with "Chortle" and "gosh!" :)

  8.
Just a quick one, how long did it take? Deposit to finished article? Put my deposit down in May, Jon says 5 months. I've heard luthiers months are a bit longer than normal months...
Yup Luthier months are usually about 60-90 days long. :)
Of course you have to factor in supplier delays too. My Shuker was delayed by 2 months or so waiting for a pickup...

  9.
Agreed, but I also think Joe Cocker's version is one of the very few Beatles covers that are better than the original:

And with the words, er, almost :)

  10.
Well : as a positive note, whether it's McCartney, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Smiths or anyone else : you can be proud of what the UK has contributed to popmusic. It beats Belgium ! :-)
I'd like to personally thank Belgium for Adolphe, his saxophone and it's huge contribution to popular music for the last 100 years, at least.

  11.
Wasn't the OP talking about the use of rare woods from places where there should be rare trees? I'd go along with that argument, I would certainly enjoy my bass less if I knew it was a contribution to abuse of our environment and making someone/thing homeless.

Assuming the wood comes from a place where it is plentiful and being replaced and if someone can make that wood look fabulous and shiny and someone likes it like that, well, as someone else said, each to their own.

Mine tend to be boringly black.
Most of these exotic facings are from managed woodlands. There may be bits in luthiers wood piles left over from before the world got sensible.

And I thought he was talking about Canadian Gritters. I didn't really know what that was, not being Canadian. I assumed it was something like the blokes that drive those gritter lorries, and they live in wooden shacks in Bamph or Brum or something, and someone has cut holes in their huts.
Now I realise he meant critters.

However the first line does talk about aesthetics and I assume that's his main point.

  12.
This is a great example of why i seldom delve into this area of the forum. It is full of "freaks" who read far to much into comments and take offense where there is none to take. Then to add insult or give some air of superior being they feel the need to correct a fellows typing/spelling mistakes. It must be great being so elite.
Oh please don't paint us all with the same brush... However your post did read like an argument looking for someone to argue with.
Pretty basses Vs functional basses is a well worn path and the description of a "coffee table" will annoy some people. In that absence of any hints it's not surprising that some people may take the post at its face value.

    Meanwhile:
There are lots of people on here who like both, me included. I also like a nice bit of grain shining through a traditional sunburst or other translucent finish.
It depends on the bass and context...

  13.
I'll be the first to say visit the gallery in camden town. In London it's THE bass shop. Not always the cheapest compared to online but they have a huge stock and some very nice higher end basses.
You can spend hours there. Alex is the guy who runs it and will sort you out.

    Good luck.
+1 and they will sort all the setup stuff there and then for you - important if you only have a day.
