It'll be tricky because of course both my hands are going to be busy but I also sing, so I can't keep the thing in my mouth either. Drummer will manage it but I won't. Maybe he should play it on his own, it would suit him actually. :)
No one will notice of you stop slappin' it and hold a note for a bar or two whilst you whip it out. You're just the bass player, after all
or employ a nubile roadie to hold it in their cleavage ready.

  2.
I didn't know Mark Kermode was a bass player, or that he could play harmonica at the same time, that's ace.

We're doing an "unplugged" thing next week and we've got a couple of songs with brass parts that will be missed, I'm just trying to come up with ways to cover some of them. Our singer does have a harmonica, don't know what key it's in though...
Kazoo's funnier. Get one each for everyone in the band. Don't bother with the holder then the moment when you whip them out of your pockets for the horn parts will be a surprise and more entertaining. If it's there on a holder everyone will be ahead of you and it will have less impact.

We play some stuff that traditionally has horn parts and sometimes we just sing them, or shout them in tune, really. It's a bit like a coach full of blokes might do .. Or the kazoos come out...
    That raises a smile too...

  3.
And the problem of interpretation would be...?? It is not a case of not being able to play the reference it is more about sounding the same as every other band. Not even the original band themselves would play as per record.
If you can't eake something out of a live performance that takes the music somewhere, then why bother. The listener might just as well put on the CD.

And I seriously doubt that most cover bands have the ability to ape more than an average decent track in the first place.. the vocal keys are all over the place so the reference is changed straight away, for a start.

I could go on but if you can't bring something useful to the party, you may as well be a disco. Nothing worse than hearing same old, same old...IMO.
Bit of a derail, JTUK.... However,

It's up to the band and many, many players don't have the skill to take a tune and create an version or interpretation which is as "good" as the original. Nor do they want to.

Close covers are popular in many places where they audience doesn't want to be challenged by versions or adaptations.

IMV that kind of audience would rather hear a DJ play record than an average band's average version of popular songs.
Close to the record is ideal and at least they are watching a live band rather than listening to a record.

  4.
The live music at the main theatre near me, is almost entirely dominated by tribute acts. I'm not against tribute acts, all a good mix, my criticism would be of the theatre for not varying the acts they book.
They probably want a full house of people with enough money to pay theatre prices and buy theatre price drinks in the interval.
Don't get that with random pub covers bands and orginals.

or do you mean they should book a more varied selection of tribute bands?

  5.
I bought a bass from Ishibashi when I lived in Japan, excellent service.

If anyone has any questions or things that they fancy translating PM me, am a Japanese speaker/freelance translator.
Oh I'd hate it of a real English speaker translated their descriptions accurately. Take half the fun out of it.

The u-box sales people speak English pretty well (some better than others) so if you fancy something just drop them an email.

Maybe they will allow new sales too if the Japanese economy continues to flounder ...

  6.
Tricky one.

During soundcheck the two backing vox (me and drummer) were asking for more level in the monitors. Sound guy said he wasn't getting enough level from us on stage. Sound guy then asked drummer to get closer to the mic and belt it out, drummer said "No". Sound guy came on stage and demonstrated how loud he wanted drummer to sing, drummer said "No, I don't sing that loud".

Then the sound guy tells me I'm not loud enough, I tell him his gear is f***ed and I am f***ing yelling into his mic. He says I need to yell more. I check my mic with a couple of lines from Pressure Drop, but it goes "It is you, you, you / your mics are sh*t". I make the point that the lead singer of the headline band literally f***ing mumbles through every song and I could hear him fine during their soundcheck. Singer of headline band helpfully nods in agreement.

An hour later the sound guy is telling me how the venue won't let him replace all the f***ed gear because they're about to have a refurb, and that he didn't think he would even have enough cables to do the gig. I asked him why he told me and the drummer that we were the problem when he knew his gear was all f***ed. He didn't have an answer for it.

We did the gig, nobody heard the backing vocals, which is probably for the best because we couldn't hear our vocals in our monitors either. Apparently everything else sounded alright. We won't play there again.
Worth getting your own mic, I reckon. I just upgraded to a used Beta58 that I got for £50. Very nice and better than a normal 58 but still as tough..

  7.
Previously the "Unwated" Squier VMJ was £265BIN.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unwated-Jazz-Bass-/1...=item27b3ac3a98

And they're £224 new in one of my local shops.
I've explained this to him. He still thinks it's worth what mum paid for it 'cos he's not played it ... Can't help some people ....

  8.
You know, its the public that attend gigs that thould have public liability insurance, they are always pissed and falling over all your stuff ! :) and the venues too. they have other types of insurance.
Yeah but they want to blame the band.....

Drunk falls into a PA stack and gets hit when the top box falls on them? Band's fault.
Drunk punter takes a tumble over hay bale or breaks ankle on rough floor in barn during barn dance? Band's fault.
Punter goes deaf due to sticking hairy head in bass bin? Band's fault ....

  9.
Watch that the insurance covers all of the band and not just the person named in the insurance.
+1
Also see if you can get it without the band name on it.
We lent our PA to some mates one time, weturned up with it and the venue manager was very jobsworth.
Wanted to see the PLI certificate which we had with us.
"Wrong band" he said and wouldn't let us set up our PA for them.....
    :)

Lots of venues are requesting PLI so you may find a it worth having anyway.

  10.
just been to see it (and buy it!)

its a really nice neck and im pretty sure i got a bargain (£80)

the spacings for the holes are ten mm but the spacings for the winders are 35 mm so im guessing i need jap bushes but american size tuners?
Yup looks like it had Japanese tuners. Not sure I know what you mean about the bushes and tuners. US tuners won't fit through Japanese bushes.

    Here you go

    Japanese Tuners:

    US Tuners,

  11.
Ahh so he got the matching Orange one! I thought he may have gone Ampeg or something. Ive not listened to the Orange one but Ive seen one, and despite the fact its Neo loaded, it looks like a massive tank, which is to be expected from Orange I guess.

If I had roadies, Id love one.
Yup
Don't think his mum is too chuffed as there's now a fridge sized bright orange Orange cab sitting in her lounge...
I look forward to seeing how it sounds at a gig, assuming he and his not-that-fit dad can shift it...

    Kids these days eh?

  12.
The amp itself is excellent at low levels. Half the reason I got it is because its that inbetween wattage that will let you push it with the gain at lower volumes. But open it up about half on the master and it really is insanely loud.

The 8x10 though, might be overkill! Which 8x10 did he opt for?
Er dunno, a big Orange one. Are there choices?

  13. Someone I know has just bought the AD200B and an 8x10.
He plays in a pub covers band and is a beginner (with loads of money to spend I guess).
Us old dogs are aghast, not only at his disposable cash but also at whet we imagine will be a stadium setup in smallish pubs where an unmiked drum kit is way too loud.

Will he be able to get a decent sound out of it at those levels?
