I tried the Dominants on my Eminence EUB. I found they were a bit higher tension than the Spirocore Weichs which were on the Eminence. Preferred the Spirocore's for tension on the EUB.

I have a set of 'Dominant' strings for sale. Bought from a fellow Basschat member recently to give them a try on my DB. Did not suit my bass--hence for sale. Will sell for £7O. (including postage to the UK). PM me.

Ps--You will notice on the back of the pedal two black strips. That is velcro. I used to velcro the pedal to the top of my amp as the amp had a sloping top.

Those who use a clip on tuner for the Double Bass:

What make of clip on tuner do you use? I have a couple of clip on tuners but they rarely pick up the low E. Do you have one that is good at picking up the low E?

The D'Addario's I'm looking are for cello not for DB. I currently have Spiro Weich's on my DB--quite like them but I'm looking for a more 'thump'--hence looking for the others mentioned. Looking for used to give them a try. 

I'm wanting to try different strings. As you know how expensive sets are, so looking at second hand possibility's.

Looking to try:

a) 'Obligatos'

b) Flexocor  Delux

c) D'Addario Helicore Forths--Tuning Cello

d) D'Addario Helicore Hybrid Bass String Set 3/4 Scale Length Medium Tension  (Still wanted)

Many thanks for all your replies--much appreciated. I'm to 'old' to get into cello tuning--not enough hours in the day. Wish I had taken up 5th tuning years ago. I will get a cello and tune in fourths. If it's good enough for Ray Brown / Oscar Pettiford--------------------------------------------

Hi to those who play cello--advice needed.

I am a double bassist about to try a cello. The cello to be tuned in fourths--as DB. A few questions:

a) Have you tried a set of D'addario 'Helicore Fourths' made for DB tuning? Did you like them? Good for arco & pizz?

b) Have you used an Octave pedal on the cello to get the DB lower range? If so which Octave pedal did you use? Done a bit of research on the Octave pedal and seems a lot to choose from--as no experience of them.

c) Does the DB bow work OK on the cello--do I need to get a cello bow?

My German double for sale. Would accept a  sensible offer. Bass is Circa 1880's. Written valuation.

Reason for sale or exchange: Due to my age a bit to big to carry round. The bass has been repaired in the past--I have owned the bass for approx 40 years. A set up years ago was done by Robert Dawson of Greenwich, London and quality tuners fitted and new endpin. A good sounding bass--nice to play--If I was younger I would keep it. Bought from a pro orchestral player. Used by myself for both pizz & arco. Strings are Spirocore Weich. I live in Northumberland. Could arrange to meet up if an exchange.

Details of the German bass:

Top Bout: 21 and half inches width

Bottom Bout: 26 inches width

Scale length:43 lnches

Total length of bass: 76 and 3/4 inches from top of scroll  to bottom of endpin.

Would exchange (or part exchange) my German bass for a quality smaller double bass. Depends on what you have. Looking for a smaller scale length upright bass. PM me to buy or exchange.
