1. if you've wired it right the centre position (of an ON/ON/ON toggle switch) should be single coil-
you can check by touching the polepieces to see if just one row/coil is connected.
if it's the neck-most coil selected it will sound a bit like a Rick bridge pickup.
the bridge-most coil will sound more like a Jazz bass bridge pickup.

parallel should sound scooped like a stingray (bring on the Pino impressions), and series should be fat with lots of mids and output.

2. Forbes also played on a couple of songs by Kirsty Maccoll just after getting booted from Simple Minds (probably via the Steve Lilywhite connection from Sparkle in the rain)-
her cover of New England,

and He's on the beach, which I'd never heard before-

(and it looks like him in the video posing as a reporter...)

3. I've got Rotosound Jazz flatwounds on my Hohner fretless ABG, quite an idiosyncratic setup as it's a high action, and 35-95 gauge.
sounds quite double-bass-like, but not much acoustic volume. you can hear it on the main loop line on my track "fluxivity" and some others on my myspace & soundclick players.

4. yeah, you can use normal electric roundwound strings on an ABG.

but specific acoustic bass phosphor bronze strings give more acoustic volume and acoustic-guitar-type zing.

electric flatwounds give a double bass type sound.

in theory you could even use rubber strings as on an Ashbory, if the pickup is a piezo in the bridge, as on most ABG's.

5.
also the screw is in the wrong place on schallers (off to one side) compared to the ones i'm replacing (below),
Gotoh GB7 (and the cheap copy versions), and Hipshot Ultralites have the mounting screw centred.

JazzFM to relaunch on DAB?
JazzFM is relaunching on DAB tomorrow-

(BTW Planet Rock was saved)

7. here's a toggle switch explanation-
http://www.stewmac.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?a...reeinfo/fi.html
and pickup wiring diagrams-

an ON/ON/ON switch should give you series/single/parallel selections.

a continuity tester or multimeter comes in handy for figuring out switch contacts and pickup wires.

hi there, sorry i downloaded a rip of your Jazz Bass book + CD the other day.
I'll buy it legitmately one day, I promise.

9.
When I played jazz 'live' on The National Lottery Live, I was miming to a recording of myself (as played by Carol Kaye) but the images on screen bore no relationship whatsoever with what the audience was hearing. I guess its an occupational hazard with TV work.
did the audience hear a pick?

10. looks like the video editor (probably a non-musician) put the footage of Norman playing the chorus over the footage of Dury singing the verse.

there's a similarly out-of-sync bass closeup in the vid of Simple Minds' Waterfront-

at 1.21 and 2.25, the slapping and fingerstyle clips are in the wrong respective places.

11. a pertinent blog entry by Manager/ex-V2 A&R man Ben Wardle on producers-

12.
Sorry to be cynical but what people endorse in adverts and play on stage (and the video!) and what they play in the studio may not always be the same :)
if you look closely at the ad it says "hear CR play an ESP - on tour with David Bowie and on the let's dance album".
still could be endorsement deal lies though....

13. ps. actually, it looks like it was an ESP

interesting interview here-
http://www.espguitars.com/artists_interviews.html

he likes EMG pickups.

"half talent, half social skills", words of wisdom, indeed.

14. it's either a Spector NS2 (with PJ pickups) or a Fender P also with PJ setup, as that's what he was playing in pictures & videos (see the vid for "Modern love") around that time.

play with a pick, steel roundwounds, both pickups on favouring the neck pickup slightly, maybe boost a bit of 2K if needed.
