1. there's another disco bassline I like that mysteriously appears on 2 records (not sampled, but ripped off, it seems)-
Whatnauts "help is on the way"
and a year later,
Fat Larry's band "act like you know"

De La Soul sampled it for "name and number" (I think from the Whatnauts song)

2. yeah, Hamer fretless 8-string.

I was watching how he had to hold the neck up- serious neck-dive with the 8 machineheads and the explorer body.....

I also wondered why he was playing a strat in the walking on the moon vid- did he only have his guitar with him, not any bass?

3. both, depending on the tone needed. mostly fingerstyle.

I can get a cutting rock tone fingerstyle, but a pick gives a cleaner tone- less string-fret contact.

when practicing I like to try a bassline I usually play fingerstyle with a pick instead, and vice versa, which improves cross-picking and precision, er, preciseness of picking.

4.
Got it at the delmar and It's cool to hang out with your ex - Sensless things
I never liked the Senseless Things because of the weak typical indie vocals and songwriting, but Morgan Nicholls was/is a brilliant bassist- Easy to smile another great bassline.
I didn't think much of Vent414 either. IMO a great musician stuck in awful bands.

the Stranglers- genetix, no more heroes (intro), shut up (intro), tramp, nuclear device, baroque bordello, Ice
Iron Maiden- rime of the ancient mariner, blood on the world's hands
Joe Jackson- got the time (and the Anthrax cover version)- and another song on Look sharp has a bass solo, i forget the name though
Chic- everybody dance

5. a few companies in the US have a "floating neck" concept- Treker, Bunker guitars, PBC-

the headstock is attached to the neck heel by a steel bar, carrying all the string tension.
the neck has a conventional trussrod to adjust it, but isn't connected to the headstock, it just supports the frets/fingerboard.

so the floating fretboard idea isn't that far-fetched.

you might end up being driven mad by odd rattling from loose adjustment screws though.....

6. the actual tension of the string can't be different, as the vibrating length, pitch and mass of the string are the same.

however, the extra pressure of the string against the saddle, and possibly the extra length of the string behind the saddle do have some kind of effect on the way the string bends when you pluck it.

I've noticed the difference too on my strung-through warmoth p bass.
