1.
Your mam play much bass? Seriously, buying used will make the difference between £400 worth of serious gigging equipment and £400 worth of budget gear which may not be siutable for the job. Also remember the value takes a hit as soon as you walk out of the music shop. Some of the basses and amps in the FS section are incredible value for money, i wish i'd had those offered to me when i started out playing. Since joining this site i've not really bought equipment from anywhere else, bar a few items
Nah my mom knows jack about guitars. I'll try and persuade her. - Also, I saw something for a Spector Classic Legend 4 string. How's that?
2.
That's a pity, your money will go a lot further if you do go down the second-hand route. I'd buy some of the equipment/instruments in the for sale sections like a shot if I had any money/ needed anything else.
My mom seems driven on NEW only for the guitar, but wont mind a used Amp. I'm trying to persuade her but she's stickin.
3.
I think it'd be more useful if you told us what you like, what you play & what is possible. Amps are less sexy than buying instruments but probably a better investment
Well I'm looking to play mainly funk, rock, maybe some metal. I don't like spikey shapes, and I don't really want to buy used.
4. Hey guys - Since I was last on here, I'll come into possession of a bit more I wouldn't mind spending on a better bass or amp. I can spend £400 ish in total, on everything. Guitar, amp, etc. I'm a beginner. Recommend what you've had good experiences with and what you've heard good things about. Thanks!
5. I get scared when I try to modify something that's already good because Im scared to wreck it! Often complicated too.. Is it easy to replace a scratchplate?
6. Well - I'm going to town on Sunday and I'm gonna check out: Squier VM Jazz Squier VM Precision Yamaha RBX374 And maybe some others.
7.
Yup, proud owner of an Aero2 which so far I am very happy with. The intonation seems slightly out above the 15th/16th frets. I never go that high up anyway but I will mention it to the ProBass guy. Other than that the build quality is good. The only thing I have noticed is a couple of scratchplate screws in at a funny angle. I have set the action up very low and a bit buzzy as I like it and I have to say it's possibly one of the most playable basses I have ever owned. I will do some proper sound samples at some point. I imagine the Geddy is very SX like and looks like a bargain to me.
It does look very appealing. And Geddy Lee is like.. my hero. I've liked Rush for as long as I can remember.
8.
Nah I have one of the really good SX's. I re-painted it not too long ago. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=mystery
Thats cool, but i don't think its really worth the hassel and the $80 shipping for a first bass and I dont see it on their site anymore. Still leaning towards the RBX374 or the VMJ.
9. http://www.rondomusic.com/pbg2.html That?
10. Those amps are kinda expensive.. And those SX Ursa guitars look cool. I've been looking at these ProBass things aswell. Paul H bought one and it sounded good as far as I could tell. Any thoughts on their Geddy Lee model? http://www.probass.co.uk/VMGEDDY.html
11. Saw this aswell. Looks GREAT, and has nothing but good reviews. I could stretch my budget a bit. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/82930 http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/67241 This is cool too. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/yamaha-rbx374/12486 This also.. Anyone know anything about them? So much choice xD Just found out I can get an RBX374 for £230.
12. Been looking at some more. I've heard that Yamaha are good to trust, and stay in tune and are well built etc. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-Bass-Guitar-R...6#ht_500wt_1182 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Yamaha-RBX460-Bass-G...4f#ht_992wt_941 http://www.guitarmart.co.uk/advert/G03874 I'm still kinda leaning towards new because of the timing issue though.
13. I kinda find it hard to buy off eBay because I'm kinda unsure when I'll have the money, so I'm not sure if it'll still be on the site when i get the money. So far it's still the VMJ that i'm leaning towards, I've heard that it's far more versatile, and is less of a one-trick-pony. I also prefer the more traditional look to the metallic. Can't find any used VMJs though.
14.
I have laney rb2 and it's nice and loud and it's great for a practice amp. I wish I could get my hand's on the ashdown wayne has I wouldn't need a practice amp again.
Yo I think I might aswell spend an extra £30 for the RB-2 over the RB-1. Does it come with a cable or will I need to get one seperately? - If it doesn't, is THIS a safe choice?
15. Wow.. They look really good. And cheap too. http://www.probass.co.uk/VMBLACK.html That's CHEAP. I wonder if it's any good though.
16.
I'd go with what Wayne says. Until I joined the forum last year I was tempted by Behringer. Now I would look elsewhere. There are a couple of other practice amps on GAK's site of a similar price. Like this one, I'm afraid I haven't the faintest idea what it's like, it just caught my eye . Vox Practice Amp
Ooh, I like the looks of that one. Looks retro. Spotted this also: http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/rb-1/68998 Which do you guys think would sound better?
17. Cool, thanks for making it clear. This is the amp I'm planning to get with the VMJ. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/behringer-bt-108/68588 What's a 4-band EQ?
18.
A cab is just speakers, which you'll also need a head for. A head is the amp - pre-amp and power amp combined - to plug into a cab. A combo is an all-in-one unit, amp and speaker(s) together in one box. A pre-amp is what you'll use to EQ and get your sound, won't power anything on it's own though, it needs a power-amp too. Generally pre and power will be together unless specified.
Ohhh I seeeeee! So.. Could I like.. plug THIS into my bass, and then the other end into THIS?
19. Awesome replies I'm definately gonna go for the VMJ now. Could somebody explain all the different amp things for me? Cabs, Combos, Heads, Pre-amps? Thanks.
20. Yo. What's the difference between the Standard P bass and the Standard J Bass?
21.
i really like the standard jazz. i'd say they're pretty much the same, although i've only ever played them, never owned either.
Cool, I think I'll go for the standard then. To save money, and I dont need THE BEST cause Im only learning.

23.
Yeah, get yourself to a music shop ASAP and spend some time just playing around with different basses within your price range and one or two thats not to compare. Try the VMJ and compare it to a fender jazz and youl feel how good the VMJ really is.
I'll do my best and try and get down to Fairdeal music on the weekend. What do you guys think of the Squier Standard Jazz Bass? Does the VMJ stand out as better value for money or are they pretty much the same? Also, I just saw this in Argos. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/part...ESTARCASTER.htm Isn't that quite cheap for a fender?
24. Well I'm checkin out their sounds on Youtube, seeing as I cant try them myself. And so far I am preferring the sounds of the VMJ and the Standard Jazz to the Yamaha. Do you think I should still go for the PJ or go for the VMJ that I prefer the sound of?
25. By the way guys, what are the differences between P and J pickups? And humbuckers and single coils and all the other ones? I'm clueless.
