Innit.
The whole thing originated in the On-Reflection e-mail list. We started to organise gatherings roughly 25 years ago, after an attempt at a reunion, and the band members became interested in this 20 years ago. Part of the success is in people most of the time not behaving like fans but like adults.
Most of the time. 🙂
Amongst the regular fans are some professional musicians, but AFAIK there were no rehearsals, and no interaction about timing. I gather everyone just played along to a CD and sent the vid.Yep I'd need 25 years to learn a Gentle Giant song.

Brilliant isn't it. As well as the aforementioned Gentles, there's also Jakko Jakszyk, Lee Pomeroy and probably a load of others I should recognise (as well the host of talented regular fans of course)

Do any of them start "Hey groovehacker"?

The following appeared in a recent Guitar World interview with the great Rocco Prestia from Tower Of Power:
"Looking back over your 50-year career, do you have regrets?
Sure—I should have involved myself more in the business and leadership side of TOP, instead of just going along for the ride. I might have gotten into writing sooner and helped with decisions on some of the directions we went in. I also should have learned to read music. Not being able to read handcuffed me drastically, because there’s so much work that can be had with that one skill. I gave up on it early; I just didn’t have the patience required, and then my career got underway. I’ll follow chord and even notated charts as best I can, but best for me is when someone calls out the changes."

How important is it that these books cover "Tab" notation?
Now is the perfect opportunity to avoid tab and go straight to reading music. If I was to give one piece of advice to me starting out 100 years ago, it'd be try to avoid tab if poss. That and if your strap is twisted, whichever way your turn it will be the wrong way.

An excellent book....BUT... IMO not suitable for someone starting from scratch like the OP. Perhaps later...when he knows the string names, knows the notes on the fretboard...has a grasp of scales and chord tones...etc. You have to crawl before you can walk. 😉
Apologies, I had just been reading/posting about it on another thread and it was toppermost in my mind.
The Canty book tip still stands though!

"Fingerboard Harmony For Bass" by Gary Willis
Or, Laurence Canty's "Electric Bass Guitar: The Complete Guide"

I'm sure Scott Devine would approve
Meanwhile, can anyone explain what "a linear approach" is, as mentioned in the title of Mr Willis' book? easy words only please.

Speaking of Bela Fleck, here's the Twelve Time Signatures of Christmas

You see, this is exactly why I can't bear to listen to 'funk' or, even worse', 'disco' for more than a few minutes (often much less...). True splendour, and very, very powerful 'live'; we (the audience...) are transported into higher planes by the sheer sonic experience. Top-notch stuff, and kudos for all the participants in these extravaganzas; they're the cream of the cream.
I saw Magma last year, and they played Hhai/Zombies after the hour-long opening number (a medley of the greatest hits of the Theusz Hamthaak trilogy). Incredible, and transcendant and cathartic as you say.

That's the skill of bands like Rush and Dream Theater - to play what sounds like 'just a good song' and yet it's complex if you really listen to it.
Disappear - Dream Theater
Tiberius - Smashing Pumpkins
Rush play in 7 like it's their 4/4. Check our DT's Erotomania for some mopre chewy times - I like the alternating 11/8 and 10/8 sections.

How about Genesys 'Watcher Of The Skies'..? The time signature jumps about a fair bit; one would have trouble nailing it down to any 'simple' signature...
As Genesis songs go, it's pretty straight. The Cinema Show has a 7/8 instruemtnal coda; the instrumental of Robbery Assault and Battery is 13/8, Apocalypse in 9/8 is just that (actually 9/4 but never mind) and the Firth of Fifth intro has every time sig under the sun.

Playing "Turn It On Again" at a Genesis tribute gig in the back room of a well-known Kingston music pub to an enthusiastic (ie drunk) but not exactly sold-out crowd, when a young lady went topless for the final go round. No one saw except me.
Many years later, no toplessness but a Saturday afternoon slot on a balmy summer afternoon at the local (but massive) Country Fair. Falconry, jousting, sheep shearing, Chucklehead cider in polythene jugs, and jazz rock classics from my lot. Playing the 8.30 version of Birdland to a crowd including several disparate groups of mates, my wife, her friends, and her parents etc etc was something else.

I just use the traditional 2 fingers. A 3 finger technique is capable of playing notes faster than my brain can think of them.
I use it more for string muting than speed tbh. Thumb resting on lower string, ring finger resting on higher string, and performs the first pluck when crossing in that direction.

I use three finger plucking, like Gary Willis. He does it better than me though

Name the bassist by the bass - difficulty level='basschat'

You lot should get these no trouble. Inspired by calls that the Reverb quiz ( https://reverb.com/uk/news/quiz-can-you-name-the-bassist-by-the-bass ) that's recently resurfaced is too easy and doesn't rely on the player's actual bass for identification, I threw this together with some shonky photoshop skills based on recognisable bass guitars as much as possible, failing that their playing style should give it away.
Insufferable bragging rights to the first person to get all 15, doubly so if you can name make/model for all the basses as well.
