1. Did it many times with my natural SS1's and my cherry Streamer bass, but it'll wreck anything with lacquer or finish on it.

Basically, if it's an impression (i.e. ding, buckle rash) it'll probably come out ok but if there's material missing like a chip or similar it won't help you. I used one of those linen tea towels soaked and rung out in clean water with a steam iron for the larger areas and a soldering iron for localised dings. If the tea towel starts to go brown then it needs soaking again. Linen will protect the wood from burning.

When you're done, leave it to dry out for a fair few hours - the wood will probably shrink back a bit and you'll see if you need to do any more. If it's ok, get your fine grade steel wool out and smooth the area over. Then get your Warwick wax out and get to work!

I do have some pics somewhere of my Streamer bass restoration which I'll try and find if you like.

  2.
I'm not desperate to buy another bass, as I have three already that I love. I just liked the idea of a nice passive 4 string, and as I tend towards boutique basses (look at my signature as a clue) thought I'd give this PRS a go.
Where in Hampshire are you? (PM me if necessary).

  3.
If they're anything like the guitars they'll look nice but not anything other than overpriced.
I respectfully disagree. Expensive - sure, but not overpriced. The quality of their guitars still puts Gibson and Fender to shame, and it was the big two's lack of quality per pound that made me look at PRS for the first time.

Anyway - here's my bass. Unfortunately, it's not from the series you're interested in, and I've not tried one but the first generation basses were pretty good other than the built in preamp which is junk. With it switched off and through an outboard preamp and it's ok.

  4.
Saw a fretless one of these on the wall of my local guitar shop this morning in ok condition for £450
Ouch! They're good, but I wouldn't part with that for one. But I'm impressed enough with this one that I'm now on the hunt for one of the more upmarket models (Happy Jack seems to expert on those), as well as a 5-string to add to the fleet.

I'm not totally in love with the glossy neck finish (been spoilt with too many Warwicks), and the onboard preamp isn't the best - but set flat and into a Yamaha NE-1 or similar gives some excellent results that you wouldn't expect from a budget bass. I suspect with some decent passive pickups and an outboard preamp, this thing could be even more versatile.

  5.
I call it a bargain; the best I ever had :) Cheap as chips as old orange face would say
I'm not gonna argue, it's a peach. I've had some bargains in my time, but I can't see me ever getting more bass per £.

  6.
Correct. You often seen them strung incorrectly. This one looks like its got too many wraps round the posts.
Absolutely. All cleaned up and restrung now though with 40-100 stainless - very pleased and a bargain to boot.

  7.
I think it's a 310 from the original series. It's basically the same as the 301 (which I have) but the active electronics would make it a 310.

If you remove the control cavity plate, there should be a serial number on a sticker somewhere inside the cavity.
    Dave
Thanks Dave - I'd already located the serial number and dated it from 91.
What's going on with the E & G strings on the headstock? - looks cool!
The E&G tuners are upside down on the headstock so it allows a straighter string path over the nut. It's supposed to be strung that way as far as I know.

  8. Hi guys,

Just taken receipt of this - it appears to be a 'proper' SGC Nanyo Bass Collection, with active electronics from 91. As far as I can tell from Happy Jack's excellent sticky post, it's either an SB301 or 310. Anyone know what the difference was? There's no model number on it - but it's got the SGC active pickups, Gotoh tuners and appears to be a lot of bass for what I parted with for it.

    Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Would you consider a trade for a Godin Solidac?

would love this but probably just the colour giving me GAS. already have an Albert Lee broadly similiar in spec. anyway your Silhouette is a beauty :)

would an Axis or Axis EX interest you?

btw,are we talking PRS EG4 ? - another fine (and rare) guitar!

    cheers
Hi folks,

Thanks for the kind comments - it's a lovely guitar. I'm not really looking for trades, but I might entertain offers of a 2 EQ Stingray, a Hamer Cruise 2TEK (as if I'm likely to find one of those!) or a nice tube amp.

Yes dub_junkie, it's a PRS EG4. I'm a bit of a sucker for EG's, and in the last 12 months, I've added two EGII's and the EG4 to my collection which includes an 87 Custom (vintage yellow, birds, 10-top etc.), a 94 McCarty (first year or production) and a rather unusual 89 PRS Curly Bass 4 (10-top). If you'd like a peek - PM me and I'll send you a link to my piccies.

    Cheers.

  10. Will post more pics soon, but it's all original - comes with original hard case, some paperwork and a spare pickguard routed for two humbuckers. It's a good 9/10 - some very slight impressions on the back, but nothing breaking the lacquer. Some nice birdseye on the neck too, and very little fretwear.

It sounds great, but I'm expecting an EG4 to join the fleet in the next few days and I've not yet paid the bill.

Only one pic, but will post more if there's any interest. Looking for around £650. I'm in Oxfordshire.

  11.
I know a particular BCer who might disagree due to said troublesome rod
Did I tell you the rod in the 87 was made of aluminium? And that was from the factory - Warwick denied ever putting aluminium rods in, but my luthier said it hadn't been touched since it was new, and he'd seen several old Warwick rods made like that. The threads just polished off! He also showed me a current Corvette truss rod, which was about 3 mm diameter. :)

Hahah! No worries - didn't keep it long, and I saw the Dolphin was off too - have you had enough of the Warwick thing too eh?

  13.
I don't think it's 'just' Warwicks but they do seem to be suffering the hardest.
Hmm. I've only got one left to get rid of, which has had an offer today which I'm pondering - I don't get why they're not selling either. Other than F@&$%%£ useless truss rods, they're great basses.
