s1mon321 Posted May 13, 2010 Share Posted May 13, 2010 (edited) Hey guys, I'm fairly new to the bass world so really need some advice from you good people. After spending a year playing one of those bass starter packs I bit the bullet and have just bought a Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Bass and an Ashdown EB-12 amp - both of which I'm really pleased with....... However, the E String on the bass seems really...er..floppy! It is perfectly in tune and is intonated correctly. When I play fingerstyle it sounds quite muffled and this gets even worse when I try and slap, I seem to get more percussive sound than note!? Open E String slaps are just a no go area! Nothing I do seems to fix it.........the A String is perfect (as are the others) and gives a great slap tone. Is there anything I can do, or am I better off just replacing the strings. I have no idea what the stock strings or gauge are on my bass? I know my playing technique may not be amazing, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't right. I bought the bass on the strength of its great tone for the price. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it frustrating the hell out of me. Cheers everyone. 7string Posted May 13, 2010 Share Posted May 13, 2010 Inspect the string closely and make sure that it's not unwinding itself at the bridge or the tuner. If you don't have anything to measure the string and there's nothing obviously wrong with it, I think it's worth taking it back to the shop and getting some advice on it. They should be able to help you with no questions asked. A floppy string might be to do with the gauge, but if it's brand new then you shouldn't have a problem. I have also ordered another set of strings so that I can try out another E string - have gone for a different gauge to those alledgedly installed on my bass. I would maybe take it back and ask them to have a wee look seeing as its brand new and all, could be something as simple as a bad string as 7string mentioned.
