another pedal chain question

I'm told that according to normal practice, compressors belong at the start of the pedal chain to even out signal spikes, levels, etc.
Next should be env/wah type effects while the tone is still virgin, but for a Bassballs if I put it straight after the comp, then doesn't that flatten all the dynamics that make the BB work well?
Are the 2 pedal types mutually exclusive, or is it a quetion of using the comp to take oout spikes rather than equalise the whole signal level?
Also, what is the best practice for eq pedal in the chain?
I have A/B box, looper, comp, bassballs, SYB3 synth pedal, chorus, fuzz at the moment.
