Surge protection?

I was playing at home the other evening and went to switch on a pedal but it was totally dead. Closer inspection it was hot and had the harrowing smell of smouldering silicone. The Cioks DC7 powering it was hot too.

Chatting to the folks from Cioks and EAE  who produce the Model FeT (RIP) it sounds more and more likely that a power surge was responsible. Especially after digging and finding out that on top of the hot weather there was lightning warnings around the same time (nothing nearby that I'm aware of).

I use surge protected power extensions for most stuff including my pedalboard, if it was a power surge then they clearly didn't help.

Cioks recommended Furman, a AC120a would be enough for my amp and pedals but at £180ish that's way more than I wanna spend and is the size of a class d head! It's cheaper than replacing amps and pedals though!

What do other people use? Any other good recommendations to protect my gear.
