Greetings Basschatters. I am today putting up for sale my lovely burgundy red 1988 Warwick Streamer Stage I. I bought this as a second hand instrument either in 1998 or in 1999. In any case it was the first pricey bass I ever owned, and, more importantly, it was also the first bass for which I paid with money that I’d previously earned and saved up myself. For that reason I am, as you can imagine, emotionally and sentimentally attached to this bass. However, I have developed into a Fender man over the years and simply haven’t been playing this bass properly for the past several years. So I have arrived at the realisation that emotional attachment alone isn’t a good enough reason for simply letting this beauty sit under the sofa. It’s meant to be played. Also I am on the hunt for a Fender Precision for which I need to raise some funding. That’s why I have decided to sell it.

The serial number, which has been stamped into the top of the headstock, is really difficult to read because it’s obscured by the paint job. However, if you look at it from the right angle in direct sunlight it turns out to be D 1341 88. Based on this the friendly people at Warwick have provided the following info (at this time I would like to acknowledge Warwick’s top notch customer service. It took them all of 37 minutes to reply to my initial email with all the relevant details. Amazing!!):

Anegré wood (Aningeria altissima) is sometimes known as Tanzanian Walnut (although it’s neither from a nut tree nor is it harvested much in Tanzania). According to Warwick Anegré wood was used quite a bit on SSI’s between 1986 and 1989 before they then switched to maple in 1990. Sound wise Anegré is similar to maple but it’s slightly softer and also lighter.

The bass plays and sounds beautifully. It is one of the earlier “Handcrafted in Western Germany” models, made before Warwick moved their facilities to their current location in the former GDR in the early 90s after reunification. The neck is straight and the frets should have some years left in them. The bass could probably do with a fresh setup though.

A bass this age doesn’t come without some issues of course – so here’s an overview of the ones I’m aware of. The polyester high gloss finish has quite a few dings and dongs. The worst one is on the top of the lower horn, where the wood shows through (see pics). There are some belt scuffs on the back, too.
The finish also has a number of long cracks on both sides of the body. I have tried to capture some of these in the pictures. Warwick say that this is due to the fact that the polyester finish is extremely hard and inflexible, which makes cracks like these likely to appear as the instrument ages. They’re cosmetic only though and aren’t very visible from a distance. The cracks were already there when I bought the bass and don’t affect its overall performance. IMO they even add to the bass’s mojo. Another issue is that the Dunlop strap lock on the strap button on the bottom must have ground away at the finish over time – again I have taken a picture of this. In order to prevent further damage I replaced the original Dunlop strap lock system with Warwick security strap locks and the appropriate buttons – both systems are included in this sale. Lastly the tuner for the “D” string is slightly bent. It’s hardly visible and doesn’t affect the function but you can tell when turning it, as its resistance increases a little during part of each revolution.

The bass is located in Hamburg, Germany, as am I. I am willing to ship internationally, at buyer’s expense. You are also welcome to come over for a tryout. I’ll make you a cup of coffee, too.

I bought the bass without any case or gig bag. For protection during shipping (or transport if you decide to pick this up in person) I will however include either a new(ish) cheap padded gig bag or an old battered hard case with one missing lock (your choice). Neither of these will in the long term provide adequate housing for the bass (i.e. you should replace them a.s.a.p). But they will offer sufficient protection for shipping purposes.

This bass is a beautiful instrument and I’ll be sad to see it go. I am hoping to get somewhere in the region of £1.400 for it although I am open to reasonable offers. Also, as I said, I am after a nice Fender Precision. That means I might be open to a trade if someone has the right instrument on offer. I’d be more than happy to provide more pictures and also answer any question you might have.
