Alesis 26 io, Logic, latency...

I think I'm being a noob here, but having recorded happily with analogue gear, I'm struggling with latency and sync problems with our latest set up.

Does anyone use this set up here?

Basically, we started recording in anger last night, my brother laid down the drum track to a click generated from logic through the Alesis. Everything's fine.

I then go to track the bass, there's very noticeable delay. There's a latency compensation option within the Alesis control panel, changing that from "none" to "high" seemed to have done the trick, but then later while putting the guitar down, we had to change that back from "high" to "none" and back again to get the latency down...?!

How would you go about recording, listening back and tracking using this setup?
