I think it was steve vai who came up with this one ...

What you do is pick a scale/arpeggio or indeed any ascending melodic pattern you have in your head.
The idea is then to play it from the lowest note on your instrument to the highest in a roughly diagonal sequence and one that moves up a string at randomish points.

The idea is to deliberately not use any of the usual techniques of picking the right notes e.g. patterns, interval knowledge, note names etc but just rely on your intuition to put your fingers in the right place and adjust if necessary. For bonus points do it without looking at the fingerboard.

I had a lot of fun trying to do this on the fretless last night :)
