Hi guys,

I need you opinion, I have a trace 712 that needs a new speaker, I was thinking about sticking in a 4 ohm celestion in as I don't see me ever needing an extension cab for the pub gigs that we do.

Do you reckon this would be a good idea?

It depends what you mean by a good idea really.

If you mean unleashing the full wattage from your amp without the need to use another 8 ohm cab, then yes it's a good idea.

If you mean getting an appreciable increase in volume, then no it's fairly pointless.

By dropping the impedance to 4 ohms you'll probably be increasing the wattage by about 50%, or just under 2dB in terms of volume. That's pretty much inaudible in the real world.

If you should ever decide to use another matching cab the increased displacement and wattage combined will give you about 5dB increase in volume, as well as improved bass handling. Now that is useful. :)
I wouldn't do it.You can't predict that you won't need an extension cab one day, plus it may lower it's resale value. As an aside,I'm fairly sure that Trace Elliots used Eminence speakers.
+1 on the advice. Trace used ``celestions or in the early days Fanes, I would just buy a replacement from Lean business
