  1. Have to agree with sammybee re the equipment choices. The SM57 is the most used mic in the world of recording and for good reason. Only thing I'd say is that it won't record the low end of the bass well, that said if you combine a 57 on the cab with a DI signal you can get great results. A mixing tip is to use the low from the DI (everything below 200hz) and the high from the mic (everything above 200hz) especially for a distorted sound. Another tip would be to record the DI signal clean as you might find it doesn't benefit from too much distortion, you can always add in the software later to taste. As for the software, if you're on a Mac then Garageband is a great starter software, very intuitive, if you're on PC then think FL studio is free, or cheap.

  2. Saw this on Gumtree, 96 USA Jazz for £350. I immediately responded saying it was far too cheap and would happily pay more, alas someone got in first and bartered him down to £250 as it had crackly pots FFS 😂 Probably took the shirt of his back too...

  3. Well after a quick look on the sellers FB page I see a pic of him playing the same bass with a different neck on it. I say "same bass" unless he had another with exactly the same ash wood grain. Think if you're going to lie about what you're selling try at least to make the thing look authentic ffs 🤣

  4. Hi Basschatters.

I am looking at a 2000 Fender Jazz standard bass that unusually has blocks and binding. The bass has the silver logo rather than the black usually found on 70 reissue models. Not got the serial number yet to run it through the database.

Has anyone come across this before on a USA standard model?

    Cheers

  5. Just to confirm what Mot said. I had one of these and the serial number indicated it was a late 80s  but the neck stamp said 1997. After investigation I found out that it was indeed the case that a number of necks and bodies created in the late 80s were stored and put together years later. Suppose you have the advantage of the wood being more aged and shaped during their prime era, yet fundamentally a newer less used bass, if that makes sense. Mine was great and regret selling it.

    Hi,

Yes it is, I've had a few bodies from them and never seen a stamp on the neck pocket. Is that a fairly recent thing? I bought this a couple of years ago at least.

Ah ok, maybe it's a new thing. Forgive my caution but I bought a Japanese Squier P recently and found out the body was MDF so double checking any purchases. This one looks good, I was really after a finished P body but may go for this PJ and apply a finish myself, jus having a think and final look round

    Dave

  7. Looks nice, did you re paint the body yourself? It looks like a silver series, though doesn't have the logo on the headstock, I have a 91 strat the same.

I'm looking for one of these to upgrade myself, already have the pickups and hardware etc but if I hadn't and couldn't be bothered (or able) I'd be considering this one.

Have a Sunday afternoon listing bump, GLWS

  8. Nice bass. If I have the funds before it sells I might just go for this. The Ad title you link to says Crafted in Japan, though the headstock on both yours and one in the ad says Made In Japan. Not too far away in York

What is the nud width on these? Some Japanese P basses are slightly narrower 40mm? Maybe it's just certain Squiers I'm not sure

Yeah, it’s a great bass - I tried it against every p bass BD had in stock & this one played /felt & sounded the best ( to me )- even up against US p’s & a 60’s original - the SPB’s give it that fab vintage vibe

    cheers

    Andy

Yes, I think there was more consistency in the builds of Japanese instruments, certainly many of my favourite basses were made in Japan over the years.

  10. Nice. Think the Japanese P basses has an ever so slightly narrower nut width compared to most USA models, which I like. Although obv there was some variation over the years. Was about to spring for a 93 Japan Squier bass but this is a decent price. I'll have to see if I can find more funds before it sells. I'll keep an eye on it, I'm not far away in York btw

No but dep’ed for a band playing for Royal Engineers officers mess pre tour bash in a marquee at the barracks.

When we plugged in all our kit (pa, backline, lights, plus disco and mobile bar fridge) into provided sockets, there was a bang and all the power went down.

We followed the trail of 4 gang sockets that all led to one extension lead plugged into a socket in the kitchen.

The mess colour sergeant was very apologetic and (quietly) chuntered that “if it were a foot soldiers party, there would have been generators, etc. but what do you expect from the “Ruperts”.
    Makes you proud. 😂

Ah...in fact the poor electrical provision was the cause of one of the fires encountered....The second they deliberately set fire to their own kitchen!!!!

In the late Nineties I played lot's of military bases here in the UK and also in Germany .

I can honestly say that I never saw any actual "fights"....lot's of mucking around, acting out bravado but no real fights.

In fact I always hated playing Sergeants Mess gigs. they were by far the most  ..stuck up their own derrières!

Other Ranks .... bloody brilliant laugh... join in with everything and they would always help with the load in/ load out.

Officers Mess... jeez ...Sodom and Gomorrah had nothing on these guys! But they always treated us well....let us join in the fun after playing and fed us brilliantly.

Sergeants mess...what a bunch of stuck up pr*cks they always were... never allowed to mix...stuck away in a changing cupboard with a few stale sandwiches and  cans of  warm beer...hated them ..in fact we refused to play them after a while because they were always such miserable affairs..

Yes exactly the same. Officers gigs were ok but playing for the regulars was always good fun. Also played many gigs abroad for CSE, the best fun one was at the camp in Sarajevo. Troops from all over, US, Italy, Germany etc etc, was a very lively evening but all in the best sprint.

  13. Has anyone ever played a gig in a Sergeants mess when the emergency services have not been called? Seriously...

Played a Christmas party at one this month and true to form two ambulances and a police presence were required. Two of my previous experiences actually required the fire service attend. Thankfully no musicians or equipment were lost in proceedings!!!

I have played several over the years and this is a genuine question, I am interested to know

  14. Wow can't believe the price and that it hasn't sold. I have a Bassline Incognito from that company and without doubt it's as well build and spec'd as any bass I've encountered, and I've played most over the years, Wal, Sadowsky, Alembic etc etc. I think the problem is that their basses are relatively unheard of in the UK though used by many top players in mainland Europe. If this was white I'd be all over it as need one for a particular band I have just joined. Good luck with sale, if anyone is in doubt tell them to check out their website to see what they produce and what they normally cost...

Ah you're a Yorkie too? Yes i love it here, but my bass playing has yet to be unleashed on Yorkshire. Since moving here there's not been much time to find a (decent) band.. I just argue about basses on BC now

Unfortunately there are no decent bands left as I've ruined them all with my playing. 😄 Great site btw.
