    'Vintage' basses, any Good

    I'm no professional but FWIW I think Vintage are very good, and astonishingly good value for money.

    I played a VP940FL in Reverb Bristol just for a laugh but was surprised how nice it was:

    I was so impressed that when the son of a friend of mine came seeking advice for a new bass under £250 I sent him straight in there. He bought the fretted version:

    I played it when he brought it round and it was great. I later found out his teacher was so impressed he borrowed it off him :)

    Haven't played any of the others but the VP940's I have no hesitation in recommending.

    The 35" Scale

    I have a Zon Sonus Special 5 fretless and that is a 35" scale. Sounds fine to me, I have to stretch a tad more playing close to the nut.

    My other 5er is a Stingray, 34" and sounds fine. Sterling ball is adamant about 34" and I think he's got it right on his instruments.

    I don't think it's an argument about 34" vs 35" for the B, I think it's about finding a manufacturer who knows what they are doing.

    Best 6 string I've played is the Musicman Bongo, I loved it. Didn't have any problems reaching the B and it was well balanced.

    It's on the list, I'll get one one day.

    Doubt if I'd use a 6er as my one-and-only bass as it's a different animal to a 5er, but a very interesting addition to your collection if you have the wherewithal.

    Hi, I had to laugh I'm right next door at Brent Knoll :rolleyes:

    Thanks for the pointers I'll go have a google. It's been interesting talking to Greg because he's an EB player that's moved to DB so he's been through the pain I'm expecting to (he's a lot younger than me though LOL). After playing EB for 30 odd years there's a certain confidence and comfort that gets built up with it and I'm stealing myself for starting right back down at the bottom again, oh well :)

    Hi PedalB thanks for your post.

    I do, however, think that most of us EB'ers understand this which is why at the moment so many of us in Bristol are looking for a good teacher to teach us technique!

    I for one am under no illusion about how different (and difficult) it's going to be but that's no reason not to have a go. At my age I am realistic enough to know I am unlikely to attain the level of a top notch jazz bassist or a classical player but will be happy if I can achieve a decent level of competence so that I can entertain myself and hopefully others in some modest way.

    Hey Guys,

    I've been in contact with Greg Cordez and plan to set up a taster lesson or two. However I also floated the idea of a sort of mini-workshop for DB wannabes - don't know yet if he wants to take it on or not. I'm also going to pop in to Cremona and see if they're interested in doing something, maybe hosting an open evening or something I dunno.

    Who's up for this? Have we got 3 or 4 so far? Me, xzodar, bassbod, the Rev? Anyone else?

    Ahem, here's my opportunity to spin some long pseudo-technical yarn about tone and human audio perception and how it's better to have the low notes higher up and ignite a whole new debate... :rolleyes:

    Actually I use the 15 on it's own for practices so I just parked it on top of the 4x10 in between :) Playing live with both cabs the 15 is on the bottom, I can hear the bass better out of the 410s like that.

    Usually just use the 15 for most gigs, it's plenty big enough and the Stingray/Bongo's have plenty of grind so it doesn't sound wooly. I did buy a folding trolley recently so maybe I could manage the 410 instead now

    Yes, the 15 is lighter than the 410, yes I'm getting older, yes I'd like a new set of neo cabs...

    Hi, thanks, I manage to acquire 1 bass/decade: there's also a Stingray 5HH and a very old Gibson EB-4L which was my first bass bought as a teenager, crap to play and don't use it now but can't bear to sell it.

    The Zon is lovely, bought it secondhand when I did a stint in the US, paid about 1/3 what it would cost here - the Americans only seem to like new stuff so used is often very good value.

    Fabulous bass, picked it up secondhand for a ridiculous price when I lived in the States.

    Ah, we're all crawling out of the woodwork now :)

    That's a really nice idea - would be an ideal opportunity for, say, a teacher to tout for business too :rolleyes:
