I went to a gig awhile back where a Stingray, and Precision and Jazz were going through same amp during the course of the gig. They all sounded the same. That said, the amp was a Laney combo of some description, so I dunno if that's a factor Often as not, even at other gigs with a mix of basses, I can't really tell the difference alot of the time. Such things seem to be more defined when recorded - but not always.

Never heard of it. Although, listening to it an knowing it's a Zappa thing, can I ask if it's not actually piss-take or not...? -
I had to look him up on Youtube. Not my cup of tea...

Love the bass on this one...
Love this too...
Quite like Tony Franklins' fretless playing - especially on his black Precision Deluxe (has a selector switch to go between Jazz pickup, Precision pickup and I presume, a mix of both), unlined rosewood fretboard...mmmm tasty.
Yep, very nice. But very expensive! I bloody wish Fender would re-release (or 're-imagine', as they seem wont to do) the '70s unlined fretless Precision. Or just a cheaper unlined fretless P/J... It would save me having to build one, for a start -
I bought a Behringer Bass Equalizer from Jose. Ordered it Monday, got it today! It arrived nicely packed too. Geat stuff!

Surely part of Jac's sound is the Jazz bass, and (IIRC) the predominance of bridge pickup use? One wonders if he'd get the same sound from a fretless Precision...
-
It depends on what I'm playing and what's needed. I tend to prefer using a plectrum, but with my fretless I sometimes go over to playing it with my fingers if the need arises (which is once in a while).
He should listen to some bauhaus / love & rockets - David J has his own sound.
True. He inspired to have a go at playing a fretless. As did Glenn Campling. -
Are you going to replace the nut, or file it down a bit?

I'd never even heard of Jaco til I started visiting this forum, this despite playing a fretless on and off for 20 years. Sounds to me like Jeff hasn't listened to enough fretless players outside of jazz circles...

I bought some Pyramid Golds from someone here. The sleeves they came in had 'Made in West Germany' printed on them. They worked just fine

I tried some ER20s for the first time this week at a practice. Very good! I could still pick out enough from the general loudness of what's being played to be able to do my job as a bass player, and they were still comfortable after several hours of use. Yes, the little stalk things are funny, but I don't really care about anyone who wants to stare at my ears during a gig. My good looks/ugliness should be enough of a distraction
The review on BGM a couple of months ago was very good. It's difficult to find a double cutaway, semi solid, short scale bass anywhere this side of some nasty, cheap fleabay offerings or having to go for a used Starfire/Rivoli/EB-2.
There's DiPinto basses, although they're not double cutaway.
The Hagstroms look great - just a shame they're short-scale. -
It'd be interesting to see which is more popular too - lined or unlined (unlined for me)...?
I wouldn't use a fretless in my band either, as much as I like them. For fast rock/punk the attack of the note on a fretted bass just fits better IMO. I've tried with both a fretless Warwick in an indie rock band years ago, and a fretless P more recently, and it detracted more than it added to the sound.
Well, it depends. Did you try some compression or overdrive? Did you use a plectrum? I ask as you can still get some nice attack out of a fretless without too much hassle. -
I'd go for Wizard Thumpers if I had a fretless Precision.
-
Fretless is the only bass I play nowadays, predominantly played with a plectrum. I use it for the band I'm in and it's my first 'go to' option, despite having a couple of other nice fretted basses. I have a fretless Jazz, but am thinking of seeing if I can fit the neck onto an LTD Vintage-204 P/J, just to compare and contrast
I have a white Retrovibe that looks like an Aerodyne, obscene output for the money and very easy to play.
I don't think RV sells them any more tho'? They seemed like a nice bit of kit. -
I wonder if the GT suffers from neck dive - the DX does, which is it's only vice.
Has your taste changed over time?

Nowadays I tend to feel that a P/J bass is really the sort of thing I'm after. The only exception being my T-40, which has it's own variety of tones.
